1 Monumental Inscriptions The church in West Felton, dedicated to St. Michael was founded in the 12 th century. The Norman work was destroyed probably during the Reformation Period. The South aisle was added just after the Norman Apse of the Sanctuary was destroyed. The choir and the Sanctuary area were added later and constructed of local sandstone. Very little original work is to be seen now. The church was much restored during the Victorian Period by Sir Giles Scott in the mock Gothic Style. Unfortunately the 17 th century stone and copper sundial was badly vandalised about St. Michael s Church, West Felton, Shropshire Transcribed By Tony Harrison for Oswestry Family & Local History Group Copyright Page 1

3 Preface to Survey The church of St. Michael at West Felton together with its surrounding churchyard is situated on the West Felton to Woolston Road about half a mile due West of the A5. The main entrance to the church and churchyard are through a recently erected iron gate, the whole is surrounded by a sandstone wall and there is an old mounting block to the right of the gate. The site is situated on a slight rise from the road. There are several species of trees in the churchyard intermingled with the graves. These are mainly Yew, Lime, Pine, Ash, Oak and many sapling trees of all common species. A greater part of the area is covered with briars and undergrowth. In the Spring the area marked A on the enclosed map is gay with violets and blue, white and pink bluebells and snowdrops. Wild life is not in great abundance except for the more commonplace bird. The pathway leading to the church porch and the area marked A on the enclosed map to the right of this path is well maintained, also a narrow band to the left of this same path marked B. However, about three quarters of this churchyard is extremely overgrown and neglected and this has made the survey extremely difficult to carry out and accounts for the seemingly haphazard manner of numbering and recording the gravestones. It has in no way been due to lack of enthusiasm and hard work by the W.I. members who undertook the survey. It has only been possible to do small areas at a time as clearing work progressed. There are numerous gravestones that have fallen (face down) which have been impossible to record. However, it is the intention that all the memorials will be recorded if and when the churchyard clearance has been completed. Section A is fairly accurate as is the part of Section B Numbers However, where the figures in Section B lie in a different direction to all the other numbers the exact accuracy cannot be fully guaranteed by the recorder of this survey. This is due to several months and even several years having elapsed since the original survey. This was not due to lack of interest rather than to the slow clearance of the Churchyard. This has slowly taken place over the years, but rather spasmodically and very haphazardly and some areas are still fairly inaccessible. After recordings have been made and logged, graves sometimes appear where there has seemingly only been grassy areas with no sign whatsoever of tombstones or slabs. This gives rise to rather irregular grouping of numbers. Maybe in future years it could be checked again. However, we hope this will not hamper or hinder the readers of this work to any great degree. The writings are as accurate as age and state of monuments permits, it is the map that gives the recorders most cause to worry.
