1 Tel: Fax: Web: Friday January 22, 2016 R4.00 incl Municipal assets taken for debt THE Sherrif of the High Court has confiscated three vehicles belonging to the Greater Letaba Municipality to be auctioned off to recover money owned to a service provider. A tipper truck and two bakkies, belonging to the Greater Letaba Municipality, are expected to go under the hammer on February 11. This follows the Pretoria High Court ruling on November 19 last year, that the municipality s properties be repossessed and sold on a public auction, in order to recover the money owed to Star Mirls Construction and Developers CC. The properties to be auctioned off at Letaba Sheriff s Store Room, which is situated at 20 Industria Road in Tzaneen, from 10:00 will included a UD85 Tipper Truck, Nissan NP 200 Bakkie and Isuzi KB 250 Bakkie. The Greater Letaba Municipality spokesperson, Lovers Maenetje could neither confirm nor deny that the municipality owes money to Star Mirls Construction and Developers CC, saying the matter is currently sub subjudice. The matter is still subject of the court processes and our legal department is dealing with it. I can not comment at this stage, said Maenetje. Attempts to get a comment from Star Mirls Construction and Developers CC also drew a blank. The capacity of Ebenezer is at 74% after 38.60mm rain fall whilst Merensky's capacity is 84.30%. Magoebaskloof dam had 49mm of rain and its capacity is at %. Vergelegen is at % and Dap Naude at 89.40% after 67.90mm rain. Middle-Letaba is at a staggering 27.50% capacity after 8mm rain. Thabina is also not looking good with it's capacity at 20.94% after no rain fall. Modjadji is at a low of 22.28% capacity but received 36.50mm of rain. Tzaneen dam, the dam that provides the most water to the community, is also at a shocking 37.50% but received 34.50mm rain. RAIN: Rainfall has brought some relief but Tzaneen dam needs more. 2 2 NEWS Mob-victim identified Nkhensani Nkhwashu A suspected robber was assaulted severely and burnt to death last Monday at Songwane village next to Mahwibidung village in the Maake policing area by angry community members. The deceased, identified as 29 year-old Thapelo Walter Maphanga, together with his two armed accomplices attacked a local shop, pointed firearms at everybody, demanded money. During the process, the shop owner screamed for help from community members, who ultimately responded in a large number. According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, Maphanga hails from Mablejan village in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga Province. Ngoepe said, South African Police Services (SAPS) would like to reiterate their call on the condemnation of mob attacks and killings by members of the communities on people suspected of criminal activities. Community members may arrest a suspected person, call the police or take him\her to the police station for her\him to appear before a court of law, he said. No arrests have been made at the time of going to press and investigations are continuing. Crime reports for the week OVERTURNED: Four people died and five were injured when a kombi overturned on Wednesday morning. The kombi was transporɵng nine students from registering at the University of Venda to their home in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga province, when the accident took place. Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said, a Toyota quantum kombi lost control and overturned. Ngoepe said the kombi was transporting nine students who were coming from the University of Venda after registration back to their homes in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga province. "Four passengers being two men and two woman around their 30's died instantly," said Ngoepe. He said the five injured passengers together with the 35 year-old driver were taken to Letaba Hospital with serious injuries. "The cause of this accident is still unknown at this stage but Police investigations are still continuing," concluded Ngoepe. The University of Venda issued a statement about the incident sending their condolences to the bereaved families. The statements states that out of the four deceased persons one was a former student and two were prospective students. The University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Operations, Dr Jannie Zaaiman said that the University is saddened by the loss and have tremendous empathy for the bereaved families. Our prayers for strength are with them, he said. The University counselling centre will provide counselling service to the survivors and next of kin of the deceased. Tzaneen: Police in Tzaneen have arrested 41 suspects for various criminal activities over the past week. According to Tzaneen police spokesperson, Sergeant Glenda Maimele, two suspects were arrested for assault, two for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two people were arrested for failure to comply with maintenance order, five for shoplifting, three for theft. Two suspects were arrested for housebreaking and theft, two for theft by false pretends, two for fraud and one suspect was arrested for house robbery. Four suspects were arrested for robbery, two for malicious damage to property, one for possession of suspected stolen property, one for possession of dagga, one for trespassing, five for illegal gambling. Three suspects for prostitution, two for public drinking and one suspect was arrested for contravening the Liquor Act. Maake: Police in Maake have arrested 35 suspects for various criminal activities over the past week. According to Maake police spokesperson, Constable Rufus Magoro, four suspects were arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, one for assault, one for robbery, one for arson, one for malicious damage to property and two suspects were arrested for stock theft. Four suspects were arrested for contravening the Liquor Act, four for possession of dangerous weapon, six for possession of dagga, four for cultivating dagga and seven suspects were arrested for illegal gambling. Modjadjiskloof: Police in Modjadjiskloof have arrested 14 suspects for various criminal activities over the past week. According to Modjadjiskloof police spokesperson, Warrant Officer, Kgamedi Seshoka, three suspects were arrested for illegal hunting and five for being illegal immigrants. One suispect was arrested for public drinking, three for shoplifting and two suspects were arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. In beide gevalle het die eienaars van die voertuie nog hulle sleutels en die voertuie is nog nie gekry nie.

Modjadjis: Residents stand together Hendrik Hancke - hendrik@herald.co.za RESIDENTS, of the beautiful Modjadjiskloof in Limpopo, are fed up with the lack of service delivery they've been experiencing over a period of more than five years. As the newly chosen Chairman of the Residents committee, Michael Rametse put it, "On Friday we will face the mayor as one people, standing together and we will start to take back our town." Fuming residents remained calm and constructive in sharing their grievances during the meeting. A list of grievances were read out by Rametse and verbally confirmed by the other residents, in order to form a united and uncluttered front for their confrontation with the mayor on Friday night (again at 18:00 in the Laerskool Duiwelskloof school hall). The issues raised were spread wide across the municipal landscape, ranging from financial mismanagement, through electricity and water supply to the maintenance and upkeep of town infrastructure as well as the serious sewerage problems the town has been experiencing. Angry residents shared the challenges they face daily. As one resident put it: "You know you have to drink water before night. At night the water goes away. You know you have to eat and relax before 21:00 because at 21:00 the power goes away." Fred Hoffman, treasurer of the Resident's Committee summed it up succinctly: "The crux of the matter is financial accountability. Local farmworker killed by lightning Marianco Snyman - marianco@herald.co.za A foreman of the farm Inzana, James Mashava, aged 30, died after he was hit by lightning while working last Thursday afternoon. The owner of the farm, Francois Vorster, said another man, Masingita Mashele, was also hit but survived and was released from hospital on Thursday night. Francois also said the lightning bolt that killed Mashava was the first to hit the area, as well as the last. Mavasa had been at Inzana for 8 years and worked his way to the top. Francois described his work as reliable and neat, he also said that the death of Mavasa is a big loss for the farm s community and management. Condolences go out to his family. 3

Krag en water is kleurblind en hoe gouer SuidAfrikaners dit besef hoe beter. Dié dorpie met sy bykans ongekende potensiaal vir toerisme kan net van hier af vorentoe beweeg en die dag kom wanneer water in die pype, verwyderde riool en brandende ligte heeltemal alledaags sal voel. Tot dan is dit egter belangrik dat inwoners nie hierdie huidige momentum van samewerking verloor nie. Mens kan maar net hoop dat Vrydag se saal net so vol, indien nie voller as Maandag s n sal wees. Up and coming hip-hop artist, Masana Mbhalati, known by his stage name "Cardo" was born and bred in Nkowankowa B. He went to Unicorn Preparatory School and matriculated from Merensky High School. In 2012 he enrolled at Damelin College for a Sound Engineering Diploma which he finished in Cardo's single "Squad" is currently playlisted on YFM, MetroFM, UJFM and is top 5 on the YFM HipHopHot99 Countdown. The song was produced by a group called "StudioXBeats", from Flora Park. Cardo maintains his single has received great reception from fans, artists and Dj's in Gauteng as well as Durban and has over 5000 downloads and over 500 live streams. He said the music video will be released in march and will be available on youtube. He has appeared on the well known hip hop show on Etv, Shiz Niz back in Cardo's musical talents were first realised by his preschool teacher who noticed his love for the stage. Marula Festival launched LAUNCH: LEDET MEC, Seaparo Sekoa giving his speech during the official launch of the annual Marula Fes val. THE Limpopo Economic Development Department (LEDET) officially launched the annual Marula Festival at Sefapane Lodge and Safaris in Phalaborwa on Friday. This year marks the 11th edition of the festival since its inception in The festival is used as a platform for locals to showcase products they have made from the marula fruit such as jam, hand and body lotion, soaps, cooking oil, nuts and atchar. The music festival will be held over a period of two weekends, starting from February LEDET's MEC, Seaparo Sekoati said the festival will not only benefit Ba-phalaborwa but it will also benefit nearby towns as well. "The objective of this festival at its inception was not just about fun but was to fight poverty and unemployment among our people, to develop local tourism and hospitality industries through the promotion of Marula month," said Sekoati. 13 cooperatives across the province will benefit from the festival which the government continues to support and help market beyond the borders of the province. Our involvement as government in the facilitation of registration of these Cooperatives had positive spin-offs on investment into the industry and the employment of rural community members who assisted in harvesting and transportation of the fruit annually, depending on the order from the organizers of the Marula festival," said Sekoati. He also added that they will not relent until the living standard in the province has improved. The town of Phalaborwa, because of its tourism profile and close proximity to other major tourist destinations including the world s renowned Kruger National Park, has been declared a permanent home for hosting the annual Marula festival. The town has a well-developed infrastructure, a top class airport and golf course, a wide variety of tourists accommodation, tourism products and numerous game lodges in close proximity. It is easily packaged with products around Hoedspruit, Tzaneen, Modjadjiskloof, Magoebaskloof and Giyani. This location and setting make Limpopo Marula Festival a major attraction for locals, domestic and international tourists.the MEC has also vowed that a recording studio will be opened from funds that will be gathered throughout the event. The studio is aimed at assisting local emerging artists.

Modjadjiskloof ly al vir 'n geruime tyd onder krag- en wateronderbrekings, selfs wanneer daar nie beurtkrag geskeduleer is nie. Volgens inwoners (en selfs sommige werkers van die Groter Letaba Munisipaliteit wat naamloos wil bly) is hierdie meerendeels te danke aan 'n gebrek aan instandhouding. Wanneer die elektriese infrastruktuur wel misluk, is die pa en seun span van Mike's Electrical, Mike en Dylan van der Spuy, gewoonlik daar om te help. Teen geen vergoeding doen hulle wat hulle kan om die dorp se kragtoevoer te herstel. Verlede week het die gemeenskap van Modjadjiskloof hulle soos een man agter die Van der Spuys geskaar om die kraguitdagings die hoof te bied nadat onderhandelinge tussen die bestuur van die Groter Letaba Munisipaliteit en sy werkers weereens skipbreuk gely het. Hoewel die Herald berig het dat werkers die krag gesny het kan dit nou reg gestel word dat dit Van der Spuy self was omdat hy bang was die lyn word aangeskakel terwyl hy daaraan werk. Die geldelike dispuut is na arbitrasie verwys en werkers moes weer die volgende dag gaan werk. Dit het egter steeds nie die elektriese probleme opgelos nie en Span Van der Spuy moes weer aan die werk spring. Die Munisipale bestuur en die gemeenskap het tot 'n vergelyk gekom en daar is ooreengekom om dadelik, met die volle ondersteuning en hulp van Munisipale werkers die krag probleem te begin oplos. Daar is besluit om nie die probleem met die ondergrondse kabels te probeer regmaak nie, maar om eerder nuwe oorhoofse kabels bo-gronds te span. Dit sou nie net die kragtoevoer tot die dorp herstel nie maar ook help om verdere kragonderbrekings te verhoed wanneer daar, soos in die verlede 'n paar druppels reën val. Die Van der Spuys is bygestaan deur sowel Munisipale werkers as lede van die gemeenskap en plaaslike besighede. Selfs Escom het hul deel gedoen deur toerusting en kabels aan hulle te verskaf. Mens kan net hoop dat hierdie soort samewerking nie 'n eenmalige gebeurtenis is nie en dat die wonderskone Modjadjiskloof uiteindelik die resep begin kry van hoe om hierdie pragtige dorpie te laat werk. Die gemeenskap het die volgende mense bedank vir hul hulp om die dorp weer van krag te voorsien:mark Tullis van Khulani Timbers vir die verskaf van pale, Modjadjiskloof SPAR vir boodrolletjies vir middagete, Jagdrift Slaghuis vir die meegaande boerewors, Overland Liquors vir koeldranke tydens die harde werk, Martie van Universal Pallets vir hulp met die afsaag en skoonmaak van bome. Alle ander lede van die gemeenskap wat elkeen bygedra het daartoe dat die krag uiteindelik na sowat 50 ure weer herstel is. Mayor congratulates top matric achievers THE Mayor of Greater Letaba Municipality, Godfrey Modjadji has congratulated the 2015 top matric achievers during the breakfast meeting at Senwamokgope Community Hall on Friday. Greater Letaba produced some of the province s top performing schools during last year s exams. A former school teacher himself, Modjadji said the upward trend witnessed in recent years could be attributed to a partnership between the education department and the municipality which is aimed at improving the quality of education in this formally disadvantaged area. He advised learners that as they prepare to enter the world of higher learning they should remember that success can only be achieved through continuous hard work. He pledged the municipality s support to matriculants in their journey to greater heights. He commended teachers, principals, circuit managers and parents, whose commitment resulted in Greater Letaba circuits which were formally dysfunctional becoming some of the best performing in the province. He urged the stakeholders to sustain the progress made and guard against regressing. One of the schools in Greater Letaba Municipal area, Modubatse Secondary in Rakwadu Circuit obtained position four in the province for producing the highest number of learners who obtained university exemptions. Of the 320 who passed 170 qualified to study for Bachelors Degrees. He applauded learners from previously disadvantaged areas for excelling despite the lack of basic resources. Modjadji added that the municipality has awarded bursaries from poor families to further their studies at various institutions of higher learning. 15 SCHOOLNEWS 15 SLC compete in Zambia TEAM TSHANDUKO: Aus n Johnson (C), Sarah Pogrund, Benno Prinsloo and Aidan du Preez who competed in Zambia. "SOME of the greatest accomplishments throughout history are marked by our capacity to push through incredible amounts of physical and mental pain to reach new heights and new goals" - Derek Lauber. Stanford Lake College took two teams to compete in the Adventure Challenge for Schools in Zambia from December 4-8. Nine teams from 3 countries, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia competed in the event. Adventure racing is a multi-disciplined, nonmotorised sport where mixed gender teams of 4 compete. It takes months of gruelling dedicated planning and training to prepare for these events. Last year s event was held at Mulungushi Dam, Zambia - 200km North East of Lusaka. Two Stanford Lake College (SLC) teams, 4 teachers and several parents left on the 30th of November 2015, making their way through Botswana and Zimbabwe to finally set up camp 4 days later on the banks of the Mulungushi Dam in Zambia. It was an exciting four days of fast paced intensive activities. Day 1 activities were at Mulungushi Dam. The teams moved on water via canoe between the different activities -mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, bouldering, high water jumps and various initiative exercises. Day 2 was spent in a gorge just below the hydro plant with activities such as gorge walking, running, hiking through river beds, abseiling, slack lining over water pools, more water jumps, Tyrolean traverse, raft building, rock pool diving, problem solving, cooking, map work and orienteering were undertaken. The Grand Challenge was over the last 2 days and was a continuous race of about 100km which included all the activities they had done during the first few days, all as one event. Not a lot of rain and high temperatures made things even more difficult! After four days of racing, various activities and a lot of blood, sweat and gears; it was a close finish between Zimbabwe s Falcon College senior team (Bushtic Gladiators) who took 1st place overall, with the SLC senior team (Ubuntu) in 2nd place by 21minutes. The SLC Junior team (Tshanduko) came home in 3rd place 25 minutes behind their senior team. Highlights of the long journey, were a river cruise down the Zambezi river at Kasane on the way there, white river rafting down the mighty Zambezi River at Victoria Falls.With 3 members doing it in kayaks (and YES, there is water at Victoria Falls, contrary to all the photos and rumours!) and mountain biking in the Matopos just outside Bulawayo (a World Heritage site) on the way home - and this was all just for fun. A huge thank you to all the sponsors: Trophy Toyota, Trappers Trading in Mall of the North, PPS in Tzaneen, Falconwood Water and Adventure Zone in Victoria Falls. Then all the teachers and the parents who came along for the adventure, their assistance and support was truly appreciated, the two teams could not have done it without them. Thank you. Well done to the 2 teams, Ubuntu and Tshanduko on finishing the year off on a high note and for their dedication throughout the year to put in all the hard training that was essential to achieving excellent results. Hy het egter Tzaneen verlaat en het sy afrigtingsloopbaan by die Hoërskool Monument gaan voortsit. Die nuwe krieketorganiseerder en hoofafrigter van die Vossies se krieketakademie is Rynier de Jager. Met meer as 10 jaar se ondervinding in krieketafrigting op verskeie vlakke, sal Ben Vorster se krieket steeds op n hoë noot bedryf word en na nuwe hoogtes en mylpale gestreef word. De Jager se loopbaan as afrigter het begin by Northern Titans Krieketunie waar hy betrokke was by junior, sowel as senior afrigting. 23 SKOLENUUS 23 Plasie atletiek kook TWEE TOEKENNINGS: Noko Malatji is as die beste veldatleet asook die Senior Victor Ludorum aangewys. DIE skooljaar het skaars begin of man en muis op Plasieland, het op Donderdag 14 Januarie op die atletiekbaan vergader om te wys hul laat in 2016 geen gras onder hul voete groei nie. Ten spyte van die hitte, was die gees op die pawiljoen aansteeklik, met al die graadgroepe wie mekaar lekker aangespoor het. Hierdie jaar was uitsonderlik, aangesien die graad 12 s sowel as die graad 8 s die grootste geraas gemaak het, en dus die geesbeker gedeel het. Verskeie rekords het in die slag gebly, wat groot dinge belowe vir die interhoërbyeenkoms in Phalaborwa te Frans du Toit op 19 Februarie. GHOLF: James Vorster, leerder van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster, het tydens die skoolvakansie in verskeie ghol oernooie presteer. Vossie presteer JAMES Vorster, graad 9-leerling van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster, het gedurende die Desember vakansie verlede jaar en Januarie vanjaar aan die volgende gholftoernooie deelgeneem: Limpopo Junior Ope: Hy word as wenner in die matchplay -afdeling aangewys. Hy het aan die interprovinsiale Suid- Afrikaanse O/19- toernooi in Worcester deelgeneem. Limpopo het 6de geëindig in hulle afdeling. James het homself oortref met sy spel en het 17de van 60 leerders geëindig. Hy het ook aan die O/15-SA toernooi vir seuns te Fish River Sun deelgeneem. Ten spyte van uitdagende weersomstandighede en strawwe kompetisie het hy 18de geëindig van 102 spelers.
