Energy Touches Everything Everything in the universe can be described in terms of energy. Galaxies, stars, molecules, and atoms may be regarded as organizations of energy. Living organisms may be looked upon as engines which operate by means of energy derived directly or indirectly from the sun. The civilizations, or cultures of mankind, also, may be regarded as a form of organizational energy Leslie White, American anthropologist, Ecology Action Centre Speaker Series - Built Environment 21 September 2016 H-19 Dalhousie School of Architecture John Crace FRAIC MNSAA LEED AP BD+C
The Law of Conservation of Energy The First Law of Thermodynamics Energy can neither be created or destroyed Energy can change forms and flow from one form to another The total energy of a closed system does not change The total amount of energy in the universe, a closed system, has always been the same, however the forms that energy takes are always changing. Ecology Action Centre Speaker Series - Built Environment 21 September 2016 H-19 Dalhousie School of Architecture John Crace FRAIC MNSAA LEED AP BD+C 11
Dark Energy But if the universe is a closed system with a finite amount of energy how can it spawn more empty space which must contain more energy? aiieeeeeeeeehhh 12 Ecology Action Centre Speaker Series - Built Environment 21 September 2016 H-19 Dalhousie School of Architecture John Crace FRAIC MNSAA LEED AP BD+C
Back here on earth most of us just tend to take energy for granted 13 Ecology Action Centre Speaker Series - Built Environment 21 September 2016 H-19 Dalhousie School of Architecture John Crace FRAIC MNSAA LEED AP BD+C
Back to Buildings Net Zero Energy Buildings. 4 Types NZEB A. Building integrated renewables provide all necessary energy NZEB B. On site renewables provide all necessary energy NZEB C. Off site imported renewables NZEB D. Off site purchased renewables National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Ecology Action Centre Speaker Series - Built Environment 21 September 2016 H-19 Dalhousie School of Architecture John Crace FRAIC MNSAA LEED AP BD+C 14
NZEB Definition: US Department of Energy After leading an extensive stakeholder engagement process over the past year and a half, the Energy Department released its findings in the recently published A Common Definition for Zero Energy Buildings, which states that a Zero Energy Building is an energy-efficient building where, on a source energy basis, the actual annual delivered energy is less than or equal to the on-site renewable exported energy. This definition also applies to campuses, portfolios, and communities. In addition to providing clarity across the industry, this new DOE publication provides important guidelines for measurement and implementation, specifically explaining how to utilize this definition for building projects. DOE Sept See also link above to 22 page document describing definition 15 Ecology Action Centre Speaker Series - Built Environment 21 September 2016 H-19 Dalhousie School of Architecture John Crace FRAIC MNSAA LEED AP BD+C
European Commission Energy Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings Nearly zero-energy buildings have very high energy performance. The low amount of energy that these buildings require comes mostly from renewable sources. The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive requires all new buildings to be nearly zero-energy by the end of All new public buildings must be nearly zeroenergy by Ecology Action Centre Speaker Series - Built Environment 21 September 2016 H-19 Dalhousie School of Architecture John Crace FRAIC MNSAA LEED AP BD+C

CaGBC s Net Zero Initiative Context Dec1 2015: In support of first ever Buildings Day at COP 21, CaGBC commits (amongst other things) to working towards bringing a net zero rating verification to Canada Dec : COP 21 international commitments to keep global average temperature increase well below 2 0 C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to C
Context March 2016: Vancouver Declaration First Ministers agree to Federal target of reducing GHG emissions to 30% below 2005 levels by 2030 Four working groups established to develop a pan-canadian framework on clean growth and climate change April 2016: WGBC launches Advancing Net Zero initiative with CaGBC participation
CaGBC s Net Zero Initiative Overarching goal: Catalyze action towards reducing GHG emissions associated with buildings Market sector: Commercial / institutional buildings Design and operations
CaGBC s Net Zero Initiative How? (sub-goals) Create consistency in our understanding and approach to Net Zero in Canada Develop a framework and associated definition(s) of Net Zero buildings that achieves broad applicability and buy-in across the country Explore the need and potential for some recognition of Net Zero efforts Identify a possible role for the CaGBC in Net Zero buildings
Progress June 1, 2016: First meeting of CaGBC s Path to Net Zero Working Group June-August: consultations with Working Group, CaGBC Energy and Engineering Technical Advisory Committee, LEED Canada Steering Committee, and small number of other key stakeholders First report to be completed end of September Definition and preliminary framework
Progress Considerations include: Energy and/or carbon Site or source (if source ) Regional or national electric grid emissions factors Onsite/offsite renewables, RECs, carbon offsets Embodied energy/carbon of materials Etc
Next steps Feedback on framework Development of pathways / strategies to net zero Development of framework for third party verification of Net Zero buildings
