3 Chapter 12 A Bleakney Album Richard L. Kenyon 32 Almond Tree Ln, Irvine CA rlkenyon@cox.net Second edition: April 26, 2008 Introduction: This chapter presents a selection of photographs of the family of B. F. Bleakney. B. F. Bleakney s biography is presented in a separate chapter. Special thanks to Lois J. Hinshaw who discovered many of these photos and supplied high quality scans of them. The photos are from the collections of Patty Stover, the Kellogg Museum, Maryann Little, Judy Parsons, Ray Pancoast and the late Ruth Deer. Relationship of persons depicted in this chapter: B. F. Bleakney, first wife Emma Bellows and 2nd wife Cynthia Ellis Winona Bleakney (married Christ Peterson who is not shown) Golda, married Arthur Wischmeier; son Ac, daughter Janet William Wade Bleakney and wife Silvia Edna and husband Roy Rhodes Clementine and husband Ira Kinyon Francis Frank Kinyon Don Kinyon (changed to Kenyon) Ruth Kinyon (Franklin) DeLon Bleakney and wife Bertha B. F. Bleakney. Left: About 1918 (detail from a family group photo at the top of page 3). Right: On a 1905 hunting trip in Canada (detail from the group photo on page 4).

6 B. F. Bleakney s 1905 visit to the homestead of his brother-in-law Ross Elllis in Saskatchewan, Canada. B. F. and Ross are posing with a string of fowl from a hunting trip. (Kellogg Museum, scanned by Lois J. Hinshaw) Except for B. F. Bleakney and wife, all of the people are relatives of Ross Ellis. From left to right: 1 Glenn Hines (son of Ross s wife Nell by her first husband) 2 Ross Ellis (brother of B. F. Bleakney s wife Cynthia) 3 B. F. Bleakney 4 Gladys Ellis (daughter of Ross and Nell Ellis) 5 Cecil Ellis (son of Ross and Nell Ellis) 6 Marie Ellis (daughter of Ross and Nell Ellis) 7 Eleanor Nell (Greene) Ellis, standing, wife of Ross Ellis 8 John Henry Ellis, seated (father of Ross Ellis) 9 Cynthia Bleakney (wife of B. F. Bleakney) 10 Roy Hines (son of Ross s wife Nell by her first husband) 12 A Bleakney Album Page 4

Ira s son Don sits on the fender of their car, while Ira s wife Clementine sits on the running board. (Collection of Richard Kenyon, gift of Ruth Deer) Ash Grove Farm, purchased in 1876 by B.F. It was enlarged from a small section of a photo of the complete family of his father Vallejo Kinyon. (Collection of Richard Kenyon, gift of Ray Pancoast) 12 A Bleakney Album Page 6

12 A note on the photos: Delon and Bertha Bleakney (Collection of Maryann Little) I am very grateful to the persons who preserved these photos for future generations. The provenance of the photos credited to the Kellogg Museum is uncertain. They were donated years ago, probably on the death of one of B. F. Bleakney s descendants who lived in the area. My guess would be Edna Rhodes. They were found, identified, scanned, and reprinted for preservation, by Lois J. Hinshaw of Kellogg. The Ellis Book is an album of Ellis family photos currently owned by Judy Parsons of Newton, Iowa. The Ellis family is related to the Bleakneys via B. F. Bleakney s second wife Cynthia. Lois J. Hinshaw found and scanned the Bleakney photos from this album. The photos that were a gift of Ruth Deer were from her collection, some inherited from her mother Clementine (Bleakney) Kinyon. The photo that was a gift of Ray Pancoast was from his mother Eathel Pancoast, who inherited it from her father Vallejo Kinyon. Vallejo is Ira Kinyon s father. The remaining photos were inherited from the ancestors of the person in whose collection the photo is now located. The original photos that are reproduced in this chapter were about 50 to over 100 years old and time had taken its toll. To make the photos look as good as they originally did, I digitally restored the photos, seeking to achieve a full scale of tones, open shadow detail, and to suppress any spots and blotches due to deterioration. I did not change the shape of facial details. Some photos required little work, but a few were very seriously faded. For the photo at the bottom of page 2, highlight detail had faded to the point where some facial detail was lost. The head-andshoulders portrait of B. F. Bleakney on the first page was extracted from a group photo and it was necessary to retouch the lower portion of his suit. 12 A Bleakney Album Page 10
