1 Descendants of John Handley Generation 1 1. JOHN 1 HANDLEY was born in 1746 in Augusta Co. VA. He died on 13 Jan 1811 in Monroe Co. WV (Union), Green Hill Cemetery. He married Mary Harrison, daughter of Benjamin Harrison about She was born in 1745 in VA. She died on 04 Dec 1829 in Huntington WV, Guyandotte Cemetery. Notes for John Handley: John Handley served as Patriot during the American Revolution. Some confusion exists between this John Handley of Monroe Co., and John Handley of Jefferson Co. (now Kentucky), once thought to be the same man. He was a Major in 1793 in the Virginia Militia, 108th Regiment, during the Whiskey Rebellion. Peters Mountain Chapter of the West Virginia Society and Wharton Chapter of the Louisiana Society, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Lord Calvert, First West Virginia, Capt. James Gibson and Capt. Henry McPherson Chapter of United States Daughters of 1812 marked John Handley's grave in Green Hill Cemetery, Union, Monroe County, West Virginia, at 2:00 p.m. on July 7, A Dar marker and 1812 marker were installed at the foot of his grave. Inscribed on headstone: "Here lies the body of John Hanly who died in the 65th year of his age." We remember John Handley with gratitude and thanksgiving for his contribution to the Independence of this great country. NOTE: I believe the John Hundley noted in the List of Capt. John Lewis's Company, September 1774 to be this John Handley. The other men in this company were his peers and many from Union/Lewisburg, Monroe Co. I know that James Burnsides and Hugh Caperton are buried in the same cemetery as John Handley. See "Virginia's Colonial Soldiers" by Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck. I, pp. 183/189 (Bk. for ) In the name of God, Amen, Dec. 27th, in the year of our Lord, 1810, I, John Handley, of Monroe County, State of Virginia, being weak in body but of perfect memory and calling to mind the mortality of the body and that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make this my last will and testament in the manner and form following, this is to say, I recommend my soul to God who gave it, and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent and Christian-like manner. To my well-beloved wife, Mary, homeplace her life time, a negro girl, Tilde, choice of mares, work-horses, a year old filly, also 3 cows and calves and one steer, with her saddle and bridle, all farming tools, household and kitchen furniture, personal belongings, all the sheep, hogs, poultry and grain with all other provisions laid up for consumption. If any of aforesd. remains at her death, except the negro girl, to be sold and divided amongst my legatees. 14. I allow my son John and my son-in-law Samuel Clark the Peters Mountain place, joining surveys made for Beckly, George Hutchison and Wm. Brown, jointly with my sons, William, Archibald & Isaac- to be equally divided between them. 15. I allow my executors to sell a negro man, Dave; and all the horses, cattle and every other article or piece of property not otherwise disposed of in this my will, and if there should be any money left after paying my debts and legal expenses of executing this will they are to pay my widow 10 pounds and divide remainder amongst my legatees.
