2 BRIEF HISTORY OF THE UNION The Union of Mongolian Architects /UMA/ is a non-governmental organization /NGO/ formed on voluntarily basis by national architects and urban development specialists that carries a high mission of serving the interests of the profession as well as the society. the union adheres to the principles of democracy, self-governance and effectiveness. The UMA founded by chartered members Ar. B.Chimed and Ar. B.Dambiinyam, as a division of the Union of Mongolian Artists in 1956 was composed originally of 31 members, united voluntarily for the purpose of synergizing and consolidating initiatives and efforts of individual author-architects and providing a platform for their effective coordination and cooperation. Synergy was and still is the ultimate vision as well as practical objective of the Union. The UMA's presence on the international stage was dynamic from its very inception. Memberships Union of International Architects 1963, participation of the 7th Congress of UIA in Republic of Cuba and followed assembly in Mexico City. Architects Regional Council Asia 1991, participation of 12 th Council meeting of ARCASIA in Beijing China. Furthermore, The UMA female architects participated since 1991 in the Union of International Female Architects.

5 CURRENT MEMBERSHIP STRENGTH There are 4 categories of membership, namely Honorary President, Honorary Advisor, Member and Foreign Member. All of them have the voting rights. The current membership strength of the Institute is as follows: Honorary President 8 Honorary Advisor 4 Member 525 Foreign member 5 Universities 8 A member pays a yearly subscription of MNT /US$30/ only.

7 BUDGET OF THE UNION Funds of UMA are raised from the following sources: - Admission fees and annual subscription of the members - Fund raising activities of working out architectural projects with Architecture - Sponsors for specific events Sales of publication

8 NUMBER OF CHAPTERS There are 5 chapters: Ulaanbaatar city, Darkhan-Uul Orkhon Uvs, Bayan-Olgii

9 NATIONAL CONVENTION OF THE UNION The UMA National Convention regularity has been recently updated. Annual conventions will held every four years, during which board members and office bearers will be selected. Sub-conferences are also held at least twice a year at a national level.

10 LEGAL STATUS OF THE UNION AND COUNTRY The registration body is Commission of Architects, Mongolia. Certain procedural requirements need to be met, such as qualification requirements, minimum five-year working experience, passing of professional practice examination criteria. The architect s registration system in Mongolia has been put into practice from and those who graduated from the accredited school of architecture can take part in the examination for registration. By passing the examination, candidate is qualified for registration. After the registration, the architect holds the title of Professional Architect. The license is issued from the National Center for Construction Urban Development and Public Utilities.

11 INTERNATIONAL AFFILIATIONS The UMA boasts ties with a multitude of international partners and regionally significant institutions, such as: Architectural Society of China Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) Korea Institute of Registered Architects (KIRA) the Union of Architects of Russia Union of Swiss Civil Engineers and Architects Architectural body of the Democratic People s Republic of Korea which among all member countries Mongolia has long-running diplomatic ties.

12 MAJOR ACTIVITIES IN THE PAST YEAR Drafted the Law of Mongolia on Architecture and submitted to Ministry of Construction and Urban Development of Mongolia. Minister D.Tsogtbaatar 2015 Received visitors representing the architects of North Korea in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia Representatives of the UMA visited North Korea and participated in the opening ceremony of the Mongolian Architecture Exhibition held in Pyongyang city.

Organized an exhibition on Japanese Architecture in collaboration with the architecture school of Kito city in Japan

13 MAJOR ACTIVITIES IN THE PAST YEAR 16 Mongolian female architects participated in the Women in Architecture 18th World Forum organized in the USA. Organized an exhibition on Japanese Architecture in collaboration with the architecture school of Kito city in Japan and leaded a lecture on Mongolian Ger project developed by researchers of the school. Received visitors from the Giprogor Institute of the Russian Federation and discussed opportunities of further cooperation.

14 MAJOR ACTIVITIES IN THE PAST YEAR Mongolian architects have presented their 6 works on the 100 Architects of the year, an international architecture exhibition organized jointly by the UIA and the Korean Institute of Architects.

These schools offering variety of education programs and some of them have 4 year schooling.

15 MAJOR ACTIVITIES IN THE PAST YEAR Debated a dialogue meeting among architects in understanding present challenges of urban development. Today, Mongolia has 8 schools running to prepare architecture professionals. These schools offering variety of education programs and some of them have 4 year schooling. It was decided to pursue a program me approved by the UIA, set up 5 year schooling for architects, and arrange a National Seminar in collaboration with the UMA and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science of Mongolia with participation of the above schools.

16 ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS FOR MEMBERS Two architect bestowed with the highest title of "Honored Architect" 4 architects awarded government's highest medals 2 architects awarded with UMA's special recognition Prize for young architects institutionalized President of UIFA Solange d' Herbez became the first foreigner granted with UMA's special recognition KEY ISSUES FACING THE PROFESSION AND ARCHITECTS Sustained requirement to build capacity of professionals, especially in the area of Green and Sustainable architecture Persistent requirement to sustain the pace of international involvement that was achieved through participation in past international symposiums and seminars Identification of optimal solutions to a wide range of planning issues, such as delineation of historical architecture zones in provincial centers and cities.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE Celebrate 60th Anniversary of the UMA. Celebrate 90th Anniversary of establishment of the modern architecture and urban development sector in Mongolia. Organize a National Seminar of urban plan designers. Hold an exhibition on Modern Mongolian Architecture. Publish an album on Architecture Works-II.
