2 Principal, Brooks + Scarpa As the Managing Principal at Brooks + Scarpa Angela Brooks, FAIA, supervises all of the office operations. She acts as the office central hub directing project flow and tempo. Her hands-on involvement runs from schematic design through completion of construction and post-occupancy. Angela is a recognized leader in the field of environmental and sustainable design and construction. She has pioneered more holistic ways of delivering affordable housing, sustainable architecture and advances in social equity. She has been practicing architecture since 1991 and is responsible for firm development in the area of housing and policy, leading the firm s sustainable initiatives and overall management. She is a powerful advocate for the rich, multivalent impact of good design. Angela sees architecture as an instrument for the triple bottom line and the delivery vehicle for space that encourages occupants to flourish. She has pursued this philosophy through two tracks since her master s thesis almost twenty-five years ago: executing and enhancing individual structures while formulating and advancing ideas that promote larger societal wellbeing through policy organizations. She is the 2018 Chair of the National AIA COTE advisory group, previously founded a non-profit called 'Livable Places' and with her firm, has received numerous National AIA design awards, the 2010 National AIA Firm Award and the 2014 Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award. Keynote: Brooks + Scarpa - Places for People Angela will describe the work of Brooks + Scarpa, detailing her efforts to create beautiful and sustainable architecture for the advancement of better cities and more equitable societies. Over twenty five years of practice, Brooks + Scarpa has competed nearly every project type ranging from single-family homes to multi-family housing, affordable housing, commercial, institutional, educational and governmental buildings. Embedded in their way of working is a respect for our natural environment and fragile ecosystems. By integrating state-of-the-art eco-friendly design and science, their work is at the leading edge of sustainability best practices and innovation. 3 Hear how higher design quality may be the single most cost-effective strategy to improve the quality, asset value, and acceptance of affordable housing AIA CES HSW LUs Marsha Maytum, FAIA Principal, Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects Marsha Maytum, a founding principal of Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects in San Francisco, will discuss how architecture can promote a regenerative future and be a catalyst for positive social change. Since 2001 LMSA has focused their practice on mission driven projects that advance the integration of environmental sustainability and design excellence, support social equity and make positive contributions to their community. Their proficiency in diverse building types, including innovative educational environments, affordable housing for disadvantaged populations, and creative adaptive reuse of historic structures, has been recognized with over 140 design awards including eight AIA COTE Top Ten Green Projects in America and the National 2017 AIA Architecture Firm Award. Ms. Maytum is a frequently invited juror and critic and has been the Pietro Belluschi Visiting Professor at the University of Oregon, the Howard A. Friedman Visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and a visiting professor at the California College of the Arts. Keynote: Architecture as a Catalyst for Change The firm of twenty-five architects and designers share a common belief in the transformative power of architecture to reach beyond the property lines to help address some of the larger challenges in our communities affordable housing, innovative education, aging with dignity, homelessness, disability rights, and climate change. AIA AXP Committee Chair, INVISION Architecture This course will provide an opportunity for candidates and mentors to learn about the NCARB experience and education requirements for licensure through traditional and alternative paths. We will discuss the guidelines and options for the Architectural Experience Program, as well as show statistics on Iowa candidates collected by NCARB in Understand how to read the AXP Guidelines for mentors and candidates to begin a conversation about AXP hours Unveil what is new about the AXP Program compared to the former IDP program and how it correlates to the new ARE 5.0 Inform Iowa professionals about options for licensure based on traditional and unique educational backgrounds Reveal statistics on Iowa candidates collected by NCARB in the last year 1 AIA CES LU 2. Health Care Design A-Z: Navigating Red Tape Ljerka Vasiljevic, Iowa Department of Public Safety The course will step through health care design from initial conception and programming through construction, outlining design considerations, state and local jurisdictions, approval processes, and changes in code that affect health care. By attending this workshop participants will be able to Learn to navigate the regulations and codes through designing in healthcare Identify different types of jurisdiction and the required approvals for each governing body. The course will be a panel-type workshop with a moderator. Several experts on architecturerelated civic policy will discuss how they deal-with and take-advantage-of constant and evolving civil guidelines. The panelists include experts on Historic Preservation, Sustainability, and government subsidized housing. By attending this workshop participants will be able to Gain knowledge about specific government policies pertaining to Historic Preservation and how they affect working in the profession. Navigating Architecture: Student Perspectives Panel Moderator: Tim Hickman, AIA, Substance Architecture The intent of this year s AIA Iowa Spring Conference is to open a dialogue and look broadly at the status of our profession within the context of this unique point in time. In response to this call a panel of Iowa State University student leaders will discuss their perspectives of what it means to navigate architecture as those about to enter the profession in 2018: AIAS (American Institute for Architects Students), IAWIA Student Chapter (Iowa Women in Architecture), NOMAS (National Organization of Minority Architecture Students), and DATUM the Student Journal of Architecture at ISU. Identify at least three issues students encounter when navigating architecture. Specifically, related to how the architects who span generations, backgrounds, and experiences are currently grappling with the realities of our climate: be it environmental, political, global, economic or social.

6 Describe the present state of navigating equity in design education and architectural practice and then discuss three reasons why these are important to the profession of architecture. Identify two ways that professionals can better accommodate the concerns, challenges, and ideals of students entering the profession at this unique point in time. Describe three initiatives in architectural education and / or the profession to navigate the intricate processes and requirements of becoming an architect. 1 AIA CES LU 5. Architects in Office: From Party Wall to City Hall Panel Moderator: Paula Dierenfeld, Professional Affiliate of AIA Iowa, AIA Iowa Lobbyist, Nyemaster Goode P.C. Lead by AIA Iowa Lobbyist, Paula Dierenfeld, a panel of three Iowa architects will share their experiences representing their communities as a part of influential boards and running for and holding office. They will discuss what or who encouraged them to get involved at a higher level and the red tape they encountered along the way. They will share what qualities of a design professional make them fit to serve, and the consequences of having architects in office. Learn about different opportunities of involvement for architects Discuss the consequences (positive and negative) of having architect in office Learn about hurdles to overcome when campaigning and serving Discuss what it means to be citizen and architect 1 AIA CES LU 6. Safely Navigating Construction Sites & Historic Building Access Joe Mullen, Iowa OSHA Consultant, Iowa Workforce Development Often projects require architects to survey existing buildings and observe active construction sites with hard to access areas where safety is paramount. This presentation will help architects & designers safely maneuver through the problems of construction observation and surveying related to building access. Examples of how to safely gain access in various projects types will be given in order help give a framework of how to tackle future access challenges. Give an overview of the architectural industry related building access issues. Identify the dangers, penalties, and corporate liability associated with improper access. Provide examples of proper access to construction sites that requiring harness, lifts, scaffolding, etc... Describe the differences in this process for buildings that are not under

7 construction (i.e. Surveying Historic Structures). Describe certifications required for vertical access to building and the different levels. Discuss current technologies that can allow safe survey and observation. Highlight how drones have become a big part of the industry standard for observation/survey and how to navigate using drones. 1 AIA CES LU HSW
