Daily Southern Cross newspaper 15 January 1865 Wellington - It was our painful duty in our last number to record the death of William Swainson, Esquire F.R.S. Mr Swainson was one of the earliest colonists, having been connected with this settlement from its formation but his name was well known in the annals of Science and Literature, having established to himself a European reputation by his different works on Natural History the following brief biographical sketch is therefore offered as a tribute to his memory. He was born in the year 1789, and was the eldest son of John T Swainson, Esquire for many years Chief Comptroller of Customs at Liverpool. He was appointed a Treasury Clerk in the Commissariat about the year 1805, and went abroad and served in Malta, the North of Italy, &c, until the peace, when he retired from the service. He then made two expeditions to Tropical America, and having made very large collections in Natural History, he returned to England. He then commenced his literary career, and wrote the Zoology portion of Murray's Encyclopaedia of Geography published the Birds of Brazil, Exotic Conchology, and finally the several volumes on Natural History (eleven in number) comprised in Laudner's Cyclopaedia. In 1840 Mr Swainson emigrated to New Zealand with his family, and has resided chiefly in this Settlement, having during the interval paid a visit of some duration to the Australian Colonies. Mr Swainson was also distinguished by his pencil no less than his pen, his talents as a draughtsman in natural history being of a very high order. Spectator 15 October. (Reference Digital NZ A-Tihi O Aotearoa website images collection Dictionary of National Biography William SWAINSON ( ) naturalist was born on 08 October 1789 at Liverpool, where his father who died in 1826 was collector of customs. His family had originally been statesman at Hawkhead in Westmoreland but his grandfather has also been in the Liverpool custom-house. His mother whose maiden name was Stanaway, died soon after his birth. At fourteen he was appointed junior clerk in the Liverpool customs but to gratify his longing for travel his father obtained him a post in the commissariat, and in the spring of 1807 he was sent to Malta, and shortly afterwards to Sicily, where he was mainly stationed during the eight following years. Before going aboard he drew up, at the request of the authorities of the Liverpool museum the Instructions for Collecting and Preserving Subjects of Natural History (privately printed Liverpool 1808) which was afterwards expanded in 1822 into his Naturalists Guild (London 8vo; 2 nd edit 1824). While in Sicily he made large collections of plants, insects, shells, fish and drawings of natural history objects visiting the Morea, Naples, Tuscany and Genoa. On the conclusion of peace in 1815 he brought his collects to England and retied on half-pay as assistant commissary-general. In the autumn of 1816 he started for Brazil with Henry Koster. A Revolution prevented their penetrating far into the interior and Swainson devoted himself mainly to collecting birds in the neighbourhood of Olinda the Rio San Francisco and Rio de Janeiro. Returning to Liverpool in 1818 he published a sketch of his journey in the Edinburgh Philosophical Journal and devoted himself to working out his zoological materials. At the suggestion of his friend William Elford Leach [q.v.] of the British Museum he learnt lithography so as to make drawings of animals suitable for colouring and in 1820 began the publication of Zoological Illustrations in which the plates are by himself (3 vols , with 182 coloured plates; 2 nd ser. 3 vols ). After five years residence in London, Swainson went on his marriage in 1825 to live with his father-in-law at Warwick and not receiving as large an access of fortune as he had expected on the death of his own father in 1826 he adopted authorship as a profession. He partly revised the entomology in London s Encyclopaedia of Agriculture and Gardening, and arranged a companion encyclopaedia of zoology. This plan was however merged in Lardner s Cabinet Cyclopaedia to which Swainson contributed eleven volumes from his own pen published between 1834 and 1840, besides on The History and Natural Arrangement of Insects (1840) written in conjection with William Edwards Shuckard [q.v.]. In preparation for this of works he visited the museum of Paris in 1828 under guidance of Cuvier and St Hilaire and to be within reach of London settled at Tittenhanger Green near HVF Swainson Hutt Valley Family created by Lynly Lessels Yates New Zealand updated 4 May

5 St Albans. From the first he adopted a quinary system based on the circular system of William Sharp Macleay [q.v.] and several volumes in the Cabinet Cyclopaedia series are devoted to elaborate expositions of these extremely artificial but professedly natural systems of classification in various groups of animals. Besides writing that portion of Sir John Richardson s Fauna Boreali-Americana that relates to birds with introductory Observations on the Natural System printed separately and furnished the article on the geographical distribution of man and animals in Hugh Murray s Encyclopaedia of Geography Swainson contributed three columns to Sir Williams Jardine s Naturalist s Library one dealing with the flycatchers (vol. xvii 1835) and the others with the birds of Western Africa (vols. Xxii, xxiii 1837). In 1837 having suffered pecuniary loses he emigrated to New Zealand. On the voyage out he lost a large portion of his collections but he took advantage of touching at Rio to take various plants to his new home to naturalise. In 1853 he was engaged by the Governments of Van Diemen s Land and Victoria to report on the timber trees of those colonies. Swainson died at his residence Fern Grover Hutt Valley New Zealand 07 December Swainson was elected a fellow of the linean Society in 1816 and of the Royal Society on the recommendation of Sir Joseph Banks in 1820 and he was also a member of many foreign academies. By his first wife, a daughter of John Parkes of Warwick, whom he married in 1825 he had five children of whom four sons survived him and by his second wife who also survived him he had three daughters. An engraved portrait of him by Edward Francis Finden from a drawing by Mosses forms the frontispiece to his volume on Taxidermy in the Cabinet Cyclopaedia. His collect of Greek plants is in the herbarium of the Liverpool botanical garden. As a zoological draughtsman Swainson combined accuracy with artistic skill and his papers in the Memoirs of the Wer-nerian Society Tilloch s Philosophical Magazine the Journal of the Royal Institution London s Magazine of Natural History the Magazine of Zoology and Botany the Entomological Magazine and the Papers of the Royal Society of Van Diemen s Land of which thirty six dealing with ornithology conchology entomology and trees are enumerated in the Royal Society s Catalogue )viii.893) contain descriptions of many species new to science. Besides the works already mentioned Swainson was the author of 1. Ornithological Drawings series 1, Birds of Brazil, 5 parts , 8vo. 2. Exotic Conchology, 6 parts, to. 3. Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural History vo. 4 Elements of Conchology 1835, 12mo. 5. Treatise on the Geography and Classifications of Animals vo. 6. The regiment then remained in Wellington until 1858 when it was ordered to Auckland, and then to Taranaki, on the outbreak of the war in In 1861, on the cessation of the war, the major retired on half pay and settled at Tutu Totara, in Rangitikei, in the beginning of 1862, where he continued to reside up to the time of his death. He was commander in the Militia and Volunteers during the subsequent Maori wars, during which he evinced great bravery and determination. On one occasion it is said, when the men were wavering and defeat seemed to be impending, he turned to them and said, You may go if you will, but I will stay here, and he infected them with his bravery for they stayed with him. He was twice married, first in 1849 to Mary, eldest daughter of William Swainson, F.K.S., who died in 1834; and next to Jane May Boulter, who also died in He had two sons by the first marriage, and one son and two daughters by the second. His death, which occurred on Wednesday, after two or three days illness, was due to natural decay. In tendering our sympathies to his relatives for his loss, we may yet say that they have the consolation arising from the memory of a life honourably l spent and well worthy of imitation reference Papers Past website Wanganui Chronicle newspaper 28 November 1891 page John Willoughby MARSHALL born 1851 New Zealand died 1940 New Zealand married 1882 New Zealand Anne HADFIELD born died New Zealand (3 Issue) #John Willoughby MARSHALL born 1851 New Zealand reference RGO NZ birth registration 1851 folio website 1851/3402 parents Mary and John Williams Marshall #John Willoughby MARSHALL married 1882 New Zealand Anne HADFIELD reference RGO NZ marriage registration 1882 folio website 1882/2835 #John Willoughby MARSHALL died 1940 New Zealand reference RGO NZ death registration 1940 folio website 1940/27628 age 89 born about 1851 #John and Anne had 3 children Marjorie Katherine born 1895, Alan Hadfield born 1899 & Huia Evelyn MARSHALL born 1903 all in New Zealand 2-2- William Swainson MARSHALL born 1852 New Zealand died 1926 New Zealand married 1892 New Zealand Elizabeth Hilda SWAINSON born 1868 New Zealand died 1953 New Zealand (7 Issue) #William Swainson MARSHALL born 1852 New Zealand reference RGO NZ birth registration 1852 folio website 1852/2379 parents Mary Frederic John Williams Marshall #William Swainson MARSHALL married 1892 New Zealand Elizabeth Hilda SWAINSON reference RGO NZ marriage registration 1892 folio website 1892/3170 #William Swainson MARSHALL died 1926 New Zealand reference RGO NZ death registration 1926 folio website 1926/3381 age 73 born about 1853 #Elizabeth Hilda MARSHALL died 1953 New Zealand reference RGO NZ death registration 1953 folio website 1953/20760 age 84 born about 1869 #William and Elizabeth had 7 children Phyllis Rawea born 1894, Lorna Margaret born 1896, Esther Pomona born 1897, Reginald William born 1899, Mary Himemanu born 1901, Wilfred Swainson born 1902 & Lionel Henry Swainson MARSHALL born 1907 all in New Zealand 2-3- Henry Richmond MARSHALL born 1854 New Zealand died 1855 New Zealand (died young never married) #Henry Richmond MARSHALL born 1854 New Zealand reference RGO NZ birth registration 1854 folio website 1854/4265 parents Mary Frederica John Williams Marshall #Henry Richmond MARSHALL died 1855 New Zealand reference RGO NZ death registration 1855 folio website 1855/715 age 6 months born about George Frederic SWAINSON born about 1828 England died October 1870 Marton New Zealand married 1859 New Zealand Mary Anne ARROWSMITH born about 1833 died 1897 New Zealand HVF Swainson Hutt Valley Family created by Lynly Lessels Yates New Zealand updated 4 May

H M Brewer deposed that he was in company with the deceased on the night of Wednesday last, and had received a bottle of medicine for him from Dr Hooper, which he had taken up to his bedroom, the deceased was then undressing, and did not complain of feeling ill to him, merely wished him good night on leaving the room. C Hooper MD, sworn, identified the body lying dead as George F Swainson, who had spent Wednesday evening in his company, most of the time playing a game of chess at the Marton Hotel, in Mr Coleman's private room. Going from there shortly after ten o'clock in company with the deceased and Mr Brewer, the deceased appeared to be very nervous and took me aside and complained of feeling unwell having had no sleep the previous night, and expressed the fear of having another bad night, and asked for some medicine. I saw him to his lodgings and returned for the medicine when I was suddenly called away to attend another patient, and in passing Mr Polgreen's I handed the medicine to Mr Brewer. On calling next morning about ten o'clock I was shown the room by Mrs Polgreen, and on entering I found Mr Swainson quite dead, lying with the right foot across the left, the left arm hanging over the edge of the bed, and the right arm bent with the hand resting on the side of the face, having evidently expired while in the act of stepping into bed. I have no doubt that death was caused by an attack of apoplexy. The jury returned a verdict of Died from an attack of serious apoplexy reference Papers past website Wellington Independent newspaper 13 October 1870 page 2 #George SWAINSON death date 06 October 1870 Wellington Court 1870 Probate records reference Archives NZ Wellington AAAR W3558 box filed date 23 December 1870 type letter of administration & AAOM 6029 W3265 box 15 record 658 #Mary Annie SWAINSON died 1897 New Zealand reference RGO NZ death registration 1897 folio website 1897/4346 age 64 born about Mary Jessie SWAINSON born 1861 New Zealand died 02 February 1942 Ruislip Middlesex England (never married) #Mary Jessie SWAINSON born 1861 New Zealand reference RGO NZ 1861 folio website 1861/7225 parents Mary Ann and George Frederick Swainson 3-2- Annie Sophia SWAINSON born 1863 New Zealand died 1865 New Zealand (died young never married) #Annie Sophia SWAINSON born 1863 New Zealand reference RGO NZ 1863 folio website 1863/10329 parents Mary Ann and George Frederick Swainson HVF Swainson Hutt Valley Family created by Lynly Lessels Yates New Zealand updated 4 May
