4 A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Dear Alumni, Supporters, and Friends of Arcadia University: Board Chair Alison (Aaron) Madsen 85 with Interim President Hank Brown. The word charitable derives from the concept of unconditional love, that which we hold most dear. And, by our nature, we want to support and protect those things that we hold dear. I know the donors recognized in this report have a passion for Beaver College and Arcadia University. And it is clear that you have shared your resources in a desire to create a better future for the next generation. These resources directly impact so many, both in and beyond the Arcadia community: the Biology majors who present their research at conferences throughout the country; the patients who benefit from our Physical Therapy program; the international community members who receive health services from our Physician s Assistant clinics; the students with intellectual disabilities realizing a chance to attend college with peers through the Raising Expectations for Academic Learning program; the first-generation college students who persist and graduate, despite a lack of funds after their sophomore year. And these are but a sampling of those who, through your generosity, you have helped. From the new learner to the alumni giver, there are so many opportunities to find your passion at Arcadia. A passion fulfilled renders the opportunity taken even more dear to us. We are a University community of great strength and love, and we thank you for all that you do. Ng became a President s Circle member in 2017 with a gift to support the women s lacrosse program, which she intended as a way to show appreciation for her alma mater and her experience on the team and to help current students excel. It s one of my ongoing goals to give back to the communities that have shaped me and have taught me the most valuable lessons, Ng stated. I m only where I am because of where I ve been. Ng played on the women s lacrosse team during her entire tenure at Arcadia. Being a dedicated Knight not only enriched her undergraduate experience, but also changed her life. She gained vital skills on Jean Lenox West Field that provided essential guidance and consistent direction. Learning how to be flexible, resilient, cooperative, and adaptable made a lasting impact. I discovered that if you work hard in the face of adversity, you can still win, she said. Today, Ng utilizes these invaluable skills to advance her career in risk management at Morgan Stanley in New York City. She returns to campus for alumni lacrosse games and maintains friendships with many of her former teammates, several of whom served as bridesmaids in her recent wedding. When I made my gift to Arcadia this year, I wanted to help students enjoy more things that campus life offers, Ng said. 10 COVENANT SOCIETY Covenant Society members have made thoughtfully planned gifts that help to secure the future of the University. Membership in the Covenant Society is open to individuals who have named Arcadia University as a beneficiary of their estate, charitable bequest, retirement plan, or life insurance policy; established a life income gift such as a charitable gift annuity or trust; or provided another planned gift to benefit the University. Each member of the Covenant Society, living and deceased, is recognized with a nameplate in the Grand Hall of Grey Towers Castle. Pradyumna and Vijay Chauhan, lifelong educators, have nurtured a wide and deeprooted relationship with the University. Dr. Pradyumna Chauhan, Arcadia s longest-tenured professor, has been shaping enthusiastic minds and leading academic endeavors on campus for nearly 50 years. His outstanding scholarship has been recognized by cultural leaders such as the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the South Asian Literary Association. His wife, Dr. Vijay Chauhan, a fiction writer and an associate professor of English at the Community College of Philadelphia, had previously taught in Arcadia s Community Scholars Program. Loyal benefactors of Arcadia, the Chauhans are members of the, Landman Society, and Covenant Society. They have generously contributed to the Library and established the Pradyumna S. Chauhan Scholarship, which supports promising undergraduates majoring in English or the humanities. A deep belief in the University s future and a fondness for the Arcadia family inspires their generosity. Arcadia graduates come back to the University and add to its richness and its reputation, [and] that is why we financially help the students, Dr. Pradyumna Chauhan said. When you give to Arcadia, you see the results almost immediately. Students take off and advance quickly. You see the returns on your investment, and that is very satisfying. The Chauhans are also proud parents of four Arcadia alumni who have gone on to pursue their own successful careers. Dr. Suneet Chauhan 79 is principal investigator of Eunice Kennedy Shriver NICHD Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network, a professor at McGovern Medical School at University of Texas Health, and an adjunct professor in the Bioengineering Department at Rice University; The Honorable Justice Raghvendra S. Chauhan 80 is judge of the Karnataka High Court in India; Prabodh Rob Sharma 88 runs his own software engineering firm in Virginia; and the youngest, Nidhi Sharma 90, 94MEd, works for the federal government. Our children have experienced great success, and we want the same outcome for the future students that will come to Arcadia, said Dr. Vijay Chauhan. Saxer 71 When Susan Saxer, a member of the Board of Trustees and former president of the Alumni Association, established an endowed scholarship, she intended to promote and propel future generations of Arcadia students to realize their potential and enrich the world. Shaped by significant student involvement and guided by their stories, the Susan C. Saxer Scholarship provides promising undergraduate students in the Honors Program or who are studying Mathematics or Economics with the support they need to embark on their educational journeys at Arcadia. This scholarship fund, and others like it, gives Arcadia students the gift of opportunity: to pursue their dreams, broaden their horizons, gain transformative experiences, and enhance their lives. A loyal benefactor and proud member of the President s Circle, Saxer realized that building this scholarship for current students and further ensuring its availability for more students over time with additional contributions reflects her core beliefs. 33 FY2016 New Student Orientation GIVING STUDENTS A HAND UP Monique Miller 73 Monique Miller believes in investing in her alma mater the way it invested in her. As an undergraduate student at Beaver College, Miller spent a semester in London, explored career paths in science and management, and formed lifelong friendships with her classmates. I had great experiences here, and the education I received was phenomenal, she said. Miller is a member of the Knight Society, and as a dedicated alumna volunteer, has helped plan reunions for her classmates from the Class of 73, frequently supports University events and programs, and has actively recruited volunteers for the Alumni Association. To ensure that future students enjoy the same opportunities that she found at Arcadia, Miller joined the Covenant Society with a bequest intention. This type of giving is about the future of the University, she explained. Arcadia is part of my family, and I get to help students who need it. I trust the University to do what is necessary to provide opportunities for generations to come. Miller s legacy gift will help to fulfill and secure the Arcadia Promise by supporting the University s endowment, which provides scholarship assistance for talented and deserving students, strengthens Arcadia s outstanding faculty, expands campus through facility development, and develops distinctive academic programs. Miller is passionate about encouraging fellow alumni to show their Arcadia pride by giving back. When you think about the education we received, you realize that the results are wonderful, Miller said. 42 ANNUAL GIVING EVERY GIFT HAS MEANING Zandra Maffett 67 Zandra Maffett joined the in honor of her Golden Reunion. For Maffett, her leadership gift was a symbolic gesture of appreciation for the exceptional education she received at Beaver College was a defining year for women s colleges, with my classmates exploring career options in fields that were just opening up to them, Maffett recalled. As an African-American woman, I saw that a door had been opened, and I believe that Beaver prepared me to step through it. After getting her start in TV broadcasting for a CBS affiliate, Maffett later made the transition from the nonprofit sector to the pharmaceutical industry, eventually retiring from Johnson & Johnson. Throughout her career, Maffett never forgot how Arcadia shaped her most formative experiences. Maffett decided to celebrate her enduring gratitude by making a gift to The Fund for Arcadia. I wanted to send a message to current students that I wish to see them fulfill their dreams by investing in their future, said Maffett. In addition, she increased her generous gift s impact through Johnson & Johnson s matching gift program. She recognized this opportunity, one that many companies offer to employees and retirees, as an advantageous way to further invest in Arcadia s students and the University. Though she recently joined the, Maffett has been a loyal benefactor and is a member of both the Covenant Society and the Knight Society. 54 WAYS TO GIVE There are several ways to give to Arcadia University. You can offer support through: Stock that has appreciated in value and is owned more than a year offers the benefit of avoiding capital gains tax on the appreciation and may qualify for an income tax charitable deduction. A donor-advised fund allows you to recommend annual grants to benefit Arcadia. Many fund administrators allow you to sign a letter of intent expressing your interest in supporting the University for more than one year. A charitable gift annuity allows you to make a gift that pays income for life to one or two individuals. Payments are fixed and can be deposited directly to your checking account. A minimum gift of $10,000 is required, and annuitant(s) must be age 60 or older. An IRA Charitable Rollover up to $100,000 (for individuals age 70½ or older) may provide a tax advantage if you do not need the income for the required minimum distribution. A matching gift increases the value of your gift at no additional cost to you, allowing you to double or triple the impact of your gift. The University accepts pledges for up to five years and sends reminder notices on the schedule you request.
