Awards NATCON 41 The delegation of Punjab Architects visited Chinese building materials industry to have first hand knowledge about various products. The delegation was comprised of ten architects including Ar Harinder Boparai, Ar Rajan Tangri, Ar Balbir Bagga, Ar Yogesh Singla, Ar Tarsem Goel, Ar Baljit Bawa, Ar Varunesh Kumra, Ar Niranjan Kumar and Ashwani Kumar. Hong Kong based companies Jay Gee Trading and DBHA Overseas received the delegation from Guangzhou airport and escorted them to Foshan, the major centre of furniture industry just 80 kms from the world famous mega city of China, Guangzhou. The prime aim was to see manufacturing of high-end interior products like sofas, dining tables, beds, office furniture, wall papers, hardwares, etc. The delegation was very warmly welcomed by Ryan Zhang, Vice President of Louvre Furnishing Group, one of the leading international furniture mall of Foshan. It was followed by the thanks-giving speech from Ludhiana Centre Chairman Sanjay Goel. Louvre mall is probably the biggest furniture mall having 2000 brands on different floors dedicated to most beautiful and quality modern as well as classical furniture. Lots of Indian celebrities and bollywood stars used to visit this mall for their purchases. China is a very big furniture market as compared to India. A lot of leading Indians and other nationals lands in China almost every day to purchase highend products for their houses, apartments, hotels, schools, resorts, showrooms and offices. The quality and quantity of furniture available in just one mall is probably almost equal to same available in whole of North India. CHAPTER NEWS IIA CHANDIGARH PUNJAB CHAPTER IIA LUDHIANA CENTRE The Indian delegation also visited world famous China International Furniture Fair (CIFF) in Guangzhou displaying outdoor furniture, classical furniture, modern furniture, office furniture, modular kitchens, tiles, hardware and end number of interior products. Architects also did the town planning and development study of adjoining cities like Shunde and Shenzhen to see and learn how they manage their water supply, sewerage, landscaping, traffic transportation, electrification, roads, etc. Architects was overwhelmed by the warm hospitality during the stay by DBHA Overseas s Dinesh Kalra(DK), Harsh Aggarwal, Aameen Kalra, Garish and JayGee Trading s Harjinder Singh Jauria, Gurjeet Singh, Kay Huang and Katrina Zhang. Architects enjoyed beautiful musical evenings and relished various Chinese delicacies. The group also had a long ride through world famous Megapolis city of Guangzhou to see its vast infrastructure including airport, metro, buses, roads, flyovers, markets and of course beautiful skyscrapers. A few other observations of delegation are:- China being bigger country with hardworking people has more manufacturing units with quality products, probably due to the supportive government policies. Delegation felt that quality of most of the products is better than India perhaps mainly due to top class modern factories with latest and fully automatic equipments and above all dedication of the masses towards their jobs. 2 36 World Habitat Day-Press note Sanjay Goel's address World Habitat Day was celebrated by IIA-LC in Ludhiana. This day is celebrated on first Monday of every October all over the World. October 6, is also the Birthday of Great French Architect Le Corbusier. HS Gohalwaria, Mayor of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (LMC) was Chief Guest. He welcomed the idea to celebrate this day and discuss smart cities in detail. Ludhiana has been shortlisted in 100 smart cities of India to be developed by present Union Government. Mayor congratulated the whole team of IIA-LC and assured that LMC will take Architects guidance from time to time for the betterment of city. Pardeep Aggarwal, Commissioner of LMC, was Guest of Honour. He liked the event and shared his opinion about various issues concerned with the city. He was happy to see local architects working for the welfare of the city. Ar Yogesh Singla, Jt Secy of IIA-LC welcomed the chief guest, guest of honour, speakers, architects, engineers, builders, interior designers and all for sparing their valuable time to attend the seminar. Ar Sanjay Goel Chairman of IIA-LC, in his detailed presentation touched all the town planning related ambiguities of Ludhiana city with solutions. The main failure is the lack of co-ordination between many agencies responsible for the development of city. There must be single agency like Ludhiana Development Authority (LDA) rather then so many agencies. Ar Surinder Bahga was specially invited. He was very much concerned about ever increasing pollution level in Ludhiana as one of the top City in India in increasing pollution level affecting our habitat badly. He has given presentation on contemporary capital cities like Chandigarh, Islamabad, Canberra, Brasilia, etc. CHAPTER NEWS IIA CHANDIGARH PUNJAB CHAPTER IIA LUDHIANA CENTRE JOURNAL OF THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS Ar Manmohan Khanna Chairman of IIA Chandigarh-Punjab Chapter, was one of the main speaker. He explained about ever increasing slums in our metros. Ar Harinder Boparai, Jt Secy of IIA LC was one of the master mind in suggesting to celebrate World Architects Day. Ar Rajan Tangri managed the whole programme very successfully and coordinated with all speakers, guests, Architects, etc. Ar Bimaldeep Singh explained in his presentation the comparison of economically weaker section dwelling units constructed in Ludhiana with respect to Surat City and the path to be adopted in future. Ar Harpreet Kaur Dhillon also presented her paper on the role of architects in society. The seminar was supported by Practicing Valuers Association of Ludhiana (PVAL), Builders Association of Ludhiana, Lions Club Ludhiana Decent, Graavaa and IIID. IIA-LC executive suggested to the city Mayor to involve them in city decisions like on the pattern of Chandigarh Administration. Ar Shruti showing student's work to chairman CT Institute of Architecture and Planning celebrated World Habitat Day in collaboration with the Institution of Engineers and IIA Jalandhar Sub-Centre at its Shahpur campus on 6th October, The event was inaugurated by Chairman of CT Group of Institutions Charanjit Singh Channi and Chief Engineer, Local Bodies (Punjab), Er Manmohan Singh. He informed that the United Nations had chosed the theme Voices from Slums for the World Habitat Day 2014 campaign. It aims to recognize life in slums and give a voice to slum dwellers for improving quality of living in existing slums by raising awareness, developing processes and by others means. In the forum, experts highlighted their views on the deteriorating living conditions of slums. Er Manmohan Singh emphasized that there is a need to demonstrate to decision makers in the urban arena that slum programmes can achieve better living conditions for slum dwellers. Er Singh shared experiences on slum upgradation among cities and urban areas worldwide. He encouraged the contributions to a policy dialogue that focuses on the broad range of issues related to the integration of the life in the slum into the city. Another group discussion was also organised on the theme Importance of Water in Today s Habitat. Dr Manoj Kumar said, We should focus on conserving our water bodies. He said that the depth of Dal Lake was 3.5 Km in 1965 but now it has decreased to 1.5 metre. He emphasized that floods in Jammu and Kashmir is the outcome of that negligence, we should make proper efforts to conserve our water bodies by putting regular check. Dr Kumar said that Prime Minister, Narendra Modi encouraged the Indians to promote cleanliness and hygiene in the country, but that requires a continuous process. The motive will not be accomplished with a single day work. The students of Architecture also displayed their artistic skills. An exhibition was also organised displaying the paintings and art work of the students. 4 CHAPTER NEWS IIA NORTHERN CHAPTER The 3rd Friday of every month had been scheduled for the professional interaction and active participation amongst the members of the IIA-NC. The September 2014 episode of Chai, Coffee & Architecture a platform conceived by the Northern Chapter of the Indian Institute of Architects, for architects to debate and discuss issues of concern in the profession, was organized on 5th September 2014 at 5.30 pm. This 14th episode of Chai, Coffee & Architecture was held at the School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi. This session discussed and shared information on Architectural Education. It was highlighted that with the presence of 400 plus colleges, admitting an average of 60 students per batch, means making of 24,000 architects every year. It is quite natural that quality of such a large number of architects, coming from all sorts of institutions, will have a vast difference in their respective abilities. Taking the facts in cognizance, it became clear that in near future the profession of Architecture is going to be flooded with Architects who may not be fit for practice, and may also not be employable. This session in particular recorded an impressive participation by 53 architects and some students of architecture. The session concluded with an understanding that it must be carried over to a one day workshop by IIA Northern Chapter involving a wider spectrum of issues with prominent speakers from architectural practice as well as from field of education. WORLD BAMBOO DAY Maharaja Agrasen University has celebrated World Bamboo Day on 19th September, 2014 at its campus. World Bamboo Day is celebrated to generate awareness about bamboo globally since It is aimed at exploring the possibilities of its uses in design as it is a sustainable material having excellent features such as flexibility, strength and resistance against earthquake, winds, fastest growing, etc. It is a cheaper material and durable which can be used widely. Ar Neerja Babbar, Professor and Head of School of Architecture & Design welcomed the speakers. Programme started with lighting of the traditional lamp. Students and teachers all welcomed the initiative of university to celebrate World Bamboo Day. Keynote speakers were Ar Surinder Bahga and Dr Ranjana Yadav, Scientist of Indian Plywood Industries Research & Training Institute (IPIRTI), an autonomous body of Ministry of Environment and Forests. It was followed by a workshop on various types of usage of bamboo. Surinder Bahga explained that Bamboo is being used on a large scale in the world for construction industry. It is being used for flooring, furniture and roofing in buildings. Countries like Vietnam and Indonesia have done marvelous work in the field. India contributes nearly 45% of bamboo in the world market. Eminent scientist Dr Ranjana Yadav discussed about qualities of bamboo, its strengths and processing techniques. She also showed different types of samples of bamboo to students. The current estimated trade in bamboo is five billion US dollars. Bamboo related industries provide food, income and housing to over 2.2 billion people. The presentations must include project name, location, plans, photographs/ drawings of completed projects, and a brief written description of the project and design process in English. There is no limit on the number of images that can be used as long as the entire presentation does not exceed the two pages. 2. MM Univ, Ambala April 10-11, 2015 The world's urban population has grown from 220 million to almost three billion in this century alone and UN forecasts show that in 2050, more than 70 per cent of the world's population will be living in urban areas. In India, the percentage of population living in urban areas has increased from 28.6% in 2001 to 37.7% in Urban centres provide vast scope for employment in industries, transport, trade and other sectors. The speed of urbanization poses an unprecedented managerial and policy challenges and hence, the stakeholders need to get engaged in a national discussion about how to handle urbanization in the country. The post liberalization era of past 25 years has brought paradigmatic shifts in the Indian economy. This transformed Indian citizen and made him more aspirational and more demanding. Impatient with the pace of change, the citizens have often filled the vacuum, created between desire and fulfillment by introducing their own alternate practice. While the state has often been reactionary instead of being pro-active, this has transformed cities to cater to or often appease the aspiring citizens. As a result, multiple models of urban transformation have emerged that go beyond planning but persist on their own, as our urban reality today. The IIA National Convention 2014 is aimed at seeking research and papers that map, analyze and evaluate the urban realities in this cusp of change. This will be a forum for interaction and deliberation on issues and options, related to urban transformation as we experience today not just in Mumbai but in the entire country. IIA is committed to draw the Agenda for Action for infrastructure development, be it residential, commercial, public transportation or sanitation through the forum of this national convention.
