I beleve that James b. abt 1742 and Wllam b are brothers although t has not been proven wth documents other than ths letter. I beleve James b abt 1742 and hs brothers, Matthew and Stephen were here n Delaware Co pror to ther father, James and brother Wllam. Ths would lnk the Russell s of Bovna wth the Russell s n New Kngston. Ths s an old letter addressed to Messrs. James & Matthew Russell n Stamford, County of Delaware, State of New York and care of: Samuel Hckt s, North Amerca. February 13th Dear Sons James & Matthew & Stephen; I embrace ths opportunty of the HURON, an Amercan shp returnng to New York, to nform you that we are all n good health, as also your concerns & acquantance. We rec d yours both on the 23rd January, the very day a twelve month ago that we rec d your former letter & were made glad by the nformaton of your welfare, ncrease of famly, prosperty and of Stephen s arrval. As I ntend by the mddle of Aprl or soon after that to take shppng for your place, you need not expect any more notce from me n an ordnary way untl I brng t myself, I cannot as yet say whether any other of the famly wll accompany me or not, only Uncle Wllam and hs famly wll come and for hs accommodaton he desres you wll prepare a temporary habtaton for hm on some convenent spot, as hs famly s rather numerous. MUNSELL THE TOWN OF BOVINA In 1802 Robert Scott bult for Matthew Russell the frst saw-mll and grst-mll. In 1833 t was abandoned and the buldng converted nto a hop-house, and fnally t s the hay-barn of James Johnson. Thomas H. Johnson now owns and operates the woolen-mlls where, n 1803, Robert Scott bult a saw-mll and grst-mll. Mr. Johnson s old mll s near the ste of a grst-mll bult n 1801 by Robert Scott for Matthew Russell, a poneer. Stamford Federal Census The Town of Stamford was erected as an Ulster County Town on Aprl 10, 1792 by dvson of the Town of Woodstock - also an Ulster County Town. When Delaware County was erected on March 10, 1797, from part of the Countes of Ulster and Otsego, most of the Town of Stamford became one of the sx orgnal Towns thereof. On March 23, 1799, the Town of Stamford was dvded to provde for the erecton of Town of Roxbury. From Bovna he removed to Mddletown (New Kngston), bought a farm of one hundred and ffty acres, and bult thereon a log dwellng-house and out-buldngs. He cleared and mproved the land; and, havng carred out the njuncton of the couplet whch warns, Before you marry, Be sure of a home Wheren to tarry. he was joned n holy wedlock to Betsey Cummngs. Russell, a son of Matthew by hs frst wfe, was born n Bovna, Aprl 25, Havng learned the mllng trade, he found employment as a mller for sx years here before he began farmng on a tract of one hundred acres of land, whch he purchased near New Kngston, and whch s now owned by hs son Oscar. He remaned on the farm for thrty-two years; and then, abandonng ts actve cares, he came to New Kngston, where he now lves, at nearly seventy-three years of age, quetly enjoyng the reward of hs long contnued tol. On Chrstmas Day of 1845 he was marred to Mss Jane Chsholm, who was a daughter of Andrew and Else Chsholm, and who became the mother of sx chldren. She ded at the age of sxty-nne, survved by fve chldren, namely: Alce Jane, who marred Wllam Boggs, of Bovna, and has one chld; Elzabeth E., wfe of Sloan Archbald, a farmer n Bovna, they havng two chldren; Margaret A., who ded young; Andrew M., of New Kngston; John Oscar, a farmer, who marred Mss Belle Thompson, and lves near New Kngston; and Mary Adela, the wfe of Arthur H. Sands and operated by Thomas Card. It stood on the ste of Andrew Glendennng s house. Mr. Sands afterward put up an ashery, whch at that tme was qute an mportant ndustry. The custom of the early day was to gather the ashes from the burned log heaps and sell them at these asheres, of whch there were several, where they were made nto potash and pearlash for the market. The ashes were worth one shllng per bushel
