2 Page 2 Glyphs: The Mnthly Newsletter f... Page 3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Sme places are perennially ppular. Often, it seems, lcatins that are favrites tday were imprtant in the distant past as well. Such is the case with Tumamc Hill in central Tucsn. Tumamc Hill has been in the news as a very ppular walking destinatin. In the early mrning, scres f Tucsnans walk up the steep rad frm the base f the hill t the edge f the summit, beynd which access is limited. The climb is challenging and very beautiful as ne passes thrugh the desert envirnment in clear view f the trincheras walls built many millennia ag. Tumamc Hill is als lved by students f btany and eclgy. The famed Desert Labratry is there, abut halfway up the hill. Fr mre than 100 years, it has been a leading research center fcused n understanding desert eclgy. But perhaps mst f all, Tumamc Hill is lved by archaelgists. As it turns ut, peple have been using Tumamc Hill fr a very lng time. The first cmprehensive wrk n Tumamc was dne by AAHS in the 1970s, when a grup f vlunteers studied the cultural remains fund there. The results f that prject were published in an expanded issue f Kiva, 1979, Vlume 45 (1-2). Mre recently, Paul and Suzy Fish have been cnducting research at Tumamc Hill that deepens and, in many respects, alters ur understanding f the hill. Their wrk indicates the presence f agriculture as early as 2,500 years ag, and suggests Tumamc was an imprtant residential and ceremnial place with links thrughut the Tucsn Basin. There is extensive rck art n the site. It was carefully studied by Alan Ferg in the 1970s, as part f the riginal AAHS prject, and it is nw being studied in even mre detail by AAHS as part f a brader prgram led by the Fishes. Each week, a grup f 8-12 AAHS vlunteers g t Tumamc t recrd the rck art, take varius quantitative measurements, and phtgraph the rck art in a systematic way. There are days f exhilaratin, such as when we find rck art that has never been recrded. But, there are als days f disappintment, such as when we find rck art defaced by graffiti that we knw was nt there in the 1970s. We are adding new dimensins t the wrk as well. Fr example, Janine Hernbrde, an AAHS vlunteers, nticed that sme rck art features appear t be slar markers; she recruited nted archaeastrnmer Jhn Funtain t wrk with her, and they have been recrding slar interactins at a number f features thrughut the calendar year. It is t early t reach cnclusins, as there is much mre wrk t d. I can reprt that thse f us invlved are having a lt f fun, appreciate the pprtunity t further the understanding f Tumamc Hill, and hpe ur wrk will help make the case fr preservatin. SCHLOSS FORMER AAHS PRESIDENT MARCH 28, 1914 TO OCTOBER 4, 2007 Gerd Schlss, a frmer president f AAHS, died n Octber 4, fllwing a shrt illness. An bituary in the Arizna Daily Star recunts Gerd s cnsiderable accmplishments; the highlights f that article are paraphrased here, alng with sme details f his activities with AAHS. Gerd was brn in Berlin, Germany, and graduated frm medical schl at the University f Berlin in After fleeing Germany, he mved first t Switzerland and then, in 1947, t the United States. He and his wife Leny mved t Tucsn in 1954, where he became the secnd pathlgist in Tucsn, serving as directr f labratries at Tucsn Medical Center and as a prfessr f micrbilgy at the University f Arizna. Gerd spke several languages and had brad interests that included a lve f histry, art, and nature. In his retirement, he became interested in lcal archaelgy, and after jining AAHS, became active in an infrmal interest grup f AAHS called the Maya Study Grup. Because f his wrk with that grup, he was asked t serve as president f AAHS, a psitin he held frm 1981 t A quick survey f the AAHS archives reminded us f the breadth f Gerd s interests and cncerns. His archaelgical and histrical interests extended beynd the Suthwest, especially int the Mayan regin. After visits t museums in Dresden, Germany, and Bstn, Massachusetts, he lectured t the Maya Study Grup n, The Dresden Cdex Visited (in Dresden) and Cpan Revisited (in Bstn). He was als cncerned abut envirnmental issues and thught AAHS shuld ccasinally take envirnmental stands. During his term as president, natinal legislatin requiring depsits n returnable cntainers was being cnsidered. He urged AAHS t supprt this issue, sent letters t Arizna s senatrs, Barry Gldwater and Dennis DeCncini, and received replies frm bth f them thanking AAHS fr its interest. Als, in Glyphs, he encuraged a yes vte n a state Bttle Bill. Gerd enjyed leading AAHS int activities and interests that were nt traditinal fr the rganizatin (nte the Maya Study Grup and Bttle Bill abve). He arranged fr a diverse grup f speakers fr the mnthly meetings, and always lked frward t getting t knw the speaker befre the meeting ver a burger and fries at the Big A. Gerd tuched many lives thrughut ur cmmunity. He will be missed. Page 7 AAHS HAPPENINGS TOPIC OF THE DECEMBER 17 GENERAL MEETING Preservatin Archaelgy at Casa Malpais by Dug Gann Casa Malpais Natinal Histric Landmark is a small, thirteenth thrugh early furteenth century ancestral Pueblan site lcated n a vlcanic escarpment in Springerville, Arizna. The recent histry f the site highlights a cnflict between the desire fr ecnmic develpment thrugh heritage turism and the practice f archaelgical preservatin. Certainly, we need places like Casa Malpais t share archaelgy and the cultural heritage f the Suthwest with an interested general public. Hwever, the display f archaelgical depsits necessary fr an effective heritage turism experience can ultimately threaten the resurce we are trying t share. The practice f preservatin archaelgy seeks t find a balance between these tw appraches in the stewardship f imprtant places f ur shared cultural heritage. Quite a stir was created at the 1991 Sciety fr American Archaelgy meetings when it was annunced that catacmbs had been lcated beneath the ancestral Pueblan site f Casa Malpais. Many aspects f this public annuncement and the resulting events were unfrtunate. The fascinating chambers beneath the site were certainly unique features, but they were nt catacmbs. (By definitin, catacmbs are features created by human agency, nt simply burials depsited in cave cntexts.) Plans fr ecnmic develpment f the catacmb site generated well-deserved utrage frm the Hpi and Zuni peple. The fissure chambers were immediately clsed t turism, and the ecnmic develpment fcus at Casa Malpais turned t public archaelgy. The twn f Springerville spnsred several excavatins n puebl rm cells that had been heavily disturbed by previus lting. This strategy was successful fr a shrt time. The sensatinal press cverage and pen excavatins resulted in a brief surge f heritage turists. In 1993, almst 120,000 peple had visited the excavatins. By 1994, nine puebl rms had been excavated t flr level, and a great kiva and a large circular stne feature had been recnstructed. Then, public archaelgy faltered. Management plans were lst, and different archaelgists with differing research agendas spent time at the site, withut any cnsensus. Ten years later, excavatins had stpped and turism had declined. One f the village walls had cllapsed, and many mre were n the verge f ding s. Hwever, ne factr kept the heritage turism prgram alive in Springerville: the dedicatin and unwavering supprt f vlunteers frm the Little Clrad Chapter f the Arizna Archaelgical Sciety. It was the dedicatin f these vlunteers wh ensured the site was prtected and accessible nly thrugh rganized daily turs given by well-trained and knwledgeable guides. The tur prgram prvided a detailed interpretatin f ancient life at the village, as well as tying the histry f the site int the stry f the settlement f the Upper Little Clrad Basin in the mre recent past. The success f this tur prgram kept the archaelgical park arund Casa Malpais maintained and the lcal museum and visitr s center alive, but the village itself was beginning t cllapse. Emergency shring was utilized t preserve walls in place, but these unattractive devices detracted frm verall visitr experiences. The architecture f Casa Malpais needed emergency stabilizatin treatments. In 2003, the Natinal Park Service jined with the Center fr Desert Archaelgy in an initiative t stabilize the rapidly erding architecture f the village, but the recmmended preservatin treatment (backfilling mst f the excavated rms) was nt ppular. Cnsidering the twn f Springerville had spent hundreds f thusands f dllars t excavate the site, this reluctance was understandable. A generus grant frm the Arizna Humanities Cuncil was btained t implement a prgram that wuld fster cnsensus thrugh cmmunity-supprted research. The prject gathered city fficials, preservatin experts, tribal preservatin ffice representatives frm the Hpi and Zuni tribes, archaelgists, and lcal activists. These peple develped a cnsensus abut prper treatment at Casa Malpais. An interpretive plan was develped that cmbined backfilling f threatened resurces with limited recnstructin. Fieldwrk began shrtly after this plan was develped, and the prpsed technique has stabilized the architecture f the site while rendering the village landscape mre intelligible t heritage turists. Speaker Dug Gann has ver 22 years f experience in archaelgical fieldwrk, research, and public interpretatin. His Master s research fcused n the use f frm-mlded adbe brick architecture by the ancestral Hpi prir t its reintrductin by the Spanish. His Ph.D. dissertatin research cncerned the implicatins f space syntax thery in the archaelgical analysis f scial uses f space. As a graduate student, Dug pursued fieldwrk at numerus sites in the Suthwest, as well as Ecuadr, Armenia, and the eastern seabard f the United States. Mre recently, Dug has been wrking t preserve and interpret the site f Casa Malpais Histric Landmark, as well as researching techniques fr the generatin f threedimensinal mdels frm linked sets f tw-dimensinal phtgraphs.

Kaldahl, Thn O dham Natin Cultural Center & Museum On June 15, 2007, the Thn O dham Natin (the Natin) pened its new Cultural Center & Museum. The name f the institutin was chsen by members f the cmmunity in a ppular cmpetitin: Himdag Ki: (Way f Life Huse) Hekihu (Past), Hemu (Present), Im B I-Ha ap (Tward the Future). By ppular referenda, the Natin s peple requested the building f the new institutin and selected the site where the facility nw stands in the village f Tpawa, Babquivari District. Nearly $15.2 millin was allcated by the Natin fr the Himdag Ki: in The facility was entirely built and staffed with tribal dllars using prceeds frm the Natin s gaming enterprises. The apprpriatin f the funds was ne step in a lng prcess f discussin and cmmunity engagement that develped the Himdag Ki s missin: The missin f the Cultural Center & Museum is t instill pride by creating a permanent Tribal institutin t prtect and preserve O dham jewed. (land) c himdag (way f life). The Himdag Ki: is tasked with encuraging all O dham t learn mre Nte: Eric J. Kaldahl, Ph.D., RPA, served as the Himdag Ki: s Curatr f Educatin and Acting Curatr f Exhibitins since July 2004, beginning his wrk early in the architectural design phase f the Himdag Ki:. Eric has previusly served n the faculty f the Department f Anthrplgy & Gegraphy at the University f Nebraska-Lincln, and prir t that, he served as a Prject Directr at Old Puebl Archaelgy Center f Tucsn. He will be jining the staff f the Amerind Fundatin, Inc., as their Curatr in Octber Pht by Eric Kaldahl, 2006, curtesy Himdag Ki: archives. abut O dham histry, heritage, and language. It seeks t build bridges acrss O dham generatins with nging ral histry prjects and ther prgrams. It encurages O dham artists in their wrk, and supprts the arts with cmmunity festivals and wrkshps. The Himdag Ki: serves the cmmunity with an archive where cpies f everything written by O dham and abut O dham in every media will ne day be hused. It was built as a hme fr the bjects made by the O dham and their ancestrs, a place t bring back cllectins and a safe place fr cmmunity members wh want t stre their family s histrical and artistic treasures. Cmmunity advisry teams cunseled the Himdag Ki: staff in every stage f develpment: site selectin, building design, rm functin, interir design, exhibitin cntent and develpment. These advisry teams crss-cut O dham generatins and cmmunities. Durrant Grup architect Curt Ench and the Himdag Ki: staff designed a state-f-the-art repsitry and archives with exacting humidity cntrls, temperature cntrls, fire suppressin systems, cmpact shelving, and security systems. The facility is designed t serve a steady stream f users. At 38,000 ft 2, the facility and its parking areas take up 6 acres f the 30 acres f land dnated by Babquivari District. In keeping with O dham traditin, every develped indr space has just as much utdr space in the frm f gardens, patis, amphitheater and stage, and wapt (ramadas). Cnstructin was limited t the mst necessary cnstructin ftprint, leaving mst f the prperty s vegetatin intact fr future nature trails. Detentin basins harvest water frm rftps and parking lts t supprt future demnstratin fields and prtect dwnstream villages frm flding. Page 13 THE CORNERSTONE Thn O dham Natin Invests in Future f Ancestrs The Thn O dham Natin, under the 12 percent gaming revenue distributin required by state law, has awarded mre than $65,000 t the Arizna State Museum. The award will be used t supprt Native American cnsultatins and an internship t help in the design f the Native American heritage exhibit in the Tucsn Origins Heritage Park, knw as TOHP. TOHP is a significant part f the planned 30-acre cultural campus in dwntwn Tucsn, west f Interstate 10 and suth f Cngress Street, adjacent t several museums, Arizna State Museum, the University f Arizna Science Center, Arizna Histry Museum, and Tucsn Children s Museum. Tucsn s dwntwn redevelpment prject celebrates the rigins f Tucsn s culture and histry frm its earliest days. Residents have lived at and arund the ft f A-Muntain (als knwn as Sentinel Peak) cntinuusly fr at least 4,000 years. Thse first residents, including the Hhkam, left many wnderful reminders frm their time in Tucsn. Indeed, it is widely knwn that the name f this city cmes frm the O dham wrd S-cuk Sn, which means at the base f black muntain. It is apprpriate that the representatives f thse first inhabitants are tday reinvesting in that very area bth financially and intellectually. Wrking cperatively with the City f Tucsn, Arizna State Museum has held initial cnsultatins with tribes culturally affiliated with the site. The cnsultatins have resulted in naming the Native American area f TOHP as S-cuk Sn and cncurring that the Thn O dham Natin takes the lead in articulating the interpretatin f the site. The award frm the Thn O dham Natin will ensure that tribal vices cntinue t be represented in the full design and develpment f the prject. Native peples pssess their wn stries f their ancestrs and hw they lived, says Alyce Sadngei, assistant curatr fr Native American relatins at Arizna State Museum. Archaelgists and ethnhistrians have studied the site and the histrical recrd using current research techniques. These explanatins and stries will cmbine t tell a vivid, multi-vcal histry f Tucsn. The S-cuk Sn area f the Tucsn Origins Heritage Park will benefit frm the unique input ffered by descendant ppulatins. Oral histries, indigenus architectural technlgies, traditinal irrigatin and gardening practices, fr example, will cmplement and augment the archaelgical recrd. Tribal representatin will als serve as a sunding bard fr interpretive themes, as well as prvide cntacts fr additinal input, supprt, and financial cntributins.
