DATES Prior to 1752 the year began on 25 March (Lady Day). In order to avoid confusion, a date which in the modern calendar would be written 2 February 1714 is written 2 February 1713/4 - i.e. the baptism, marriage or burial occurred in the 3 months (January, February and the first 3 weeks of March) of 1713 which 'rolled over' into what in a modern calendar would be Civil registration was introduced in England and Wales in 1837 and records were archived quarterly; hence, for example, 'born in 1840Q1' the author here uses to mean that the birth took place in January, February or March of Where only a baptism date is given for an individual born after 1837, assume the birth was registered in the same quarter. 2 The Skidmore families described here are descendants of Solomon Skidmore [35a], a son of Edmund Skidmore [15] of Amblecote and Brettell 1,2. I am indebted to Mrs Kathleen Skidmore for her considerable assistance in piecing together the families in this account, for her unfailing enthusiasm for all things Skidmorean and for her continued friendship. L.M. 72a. THOMAS ROBERT 6 SKIDMORE the elder was the son of Solomon [35a] and Eliza (Saunders) Skidmore, born on 31 July 1774 in Whitefriars, off Fleet Street, and baptised at St Bride's, Fleet Street in the City on 28 August Solomon his father left Kingswinford parish in his early 20s in the retinue of Carey Stafford, a glassman, and was his warehouseman in Whitechapel, where he married Eliza Saunders in Thomas Robert Skidmore was apprenticed on 1 October 1788 to William Grainger of the Painters' Company of London. In 1825 Thomas Skidmore of the Haymarket paid 60 rent and 2.15s per quarter rates and he was on the voters' register for Westminster in The Post Office London Directory of 1829 lists T.R. Skidmore, lustre lamp manufacturer of 19, Haymarket. A glass manufacturer and seller of Hatton Garden, he married firstly Mrs Sarah Perkings on 10 September 1797 at St Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury, witnessed by William Reynolds and Sarah Bagg. Sarah Skidmore died quite soon after their marriage for on 1 June 1800 he married secondly Tabitha Barracluff. Solomon Skidmore and Edmund Smallman were witnesses. Tabitha Skidmore was dead by 1810 when he married thirdly Mrs Jane Smallman of Newington, London at St Mary's there on 25 July He was again widowed before 1841 when he and his son Thomas Robert were living at census time in the Haymarket, Westminster. He married fourthly Helen Matilda Newey (a widow of Thomas Newey (married 6 December 1821 Aston, Birmingham), baptised 18 August 1799 at St Thomas', Dudley, Worcestershire, daughter of Mark and Elizabeth (Hall) Capewell, glass manufacturer) on 26 October 1845 at St Andrew's, Holborn. At the time of the 1851 census he was perhaps in Kent where he died (styled a gentleman) at Bryant Street, Chatham on 18 August 1854 aged 80. His widow appears to be the Matilda Skidmore of Blewitts Buildings who died aged 55 and was buried at St Andrew's, Holborn on 1 July A son of Thomas Robert and Tabitha (Baracluff) Skidmore, 145a. i. THOMAS ROBERT 7 (II), baptised 25 December 1801 at St James' Piccadilly, Westminster. He was a glass manufacturer who took over his father's retail premises, Skidmore, Medical & General Glass Manufacturer at 19 Haymarket and was on the voters' registers for Westminster from 1857 through to 1860 at 38 St Martin's Lane, a glass maker. A licence from the Faculty Office dated 30 November 1827 was granted for his marriage to Mary Ann Scudamore (so far unidentified, born about 1807 in London). They were married on 2 December that year at St Margaret's, Westminster, Miss Scudamore's home parish. The witnesses were Thomas' father and two members of Mary Ann's family, namely E. Scudamore and Thomas Scudamore. I believe her to be the daughter of Benjamin Scudamore and his wife Elizabeth Mosley. His parents are presently unknown and his descendants can be found in Benjamin Scudamore of Westminster, London ( ) and his Descendants by Warren Skidmore. At the time of the 1841 census she was living, as Mary Ann Scudamore, at 1 Buckingham Row, Westminster. Two others in the household were Elizabeth (Scudamore) Danks and Elizabeth's child by her husband Thomas Danks, namely Andrew Sidesman Danks (died 1877 aged 41). Mary Ann Skidmore died on 16 May 1858 at 38 St Martin's Lane, Trafalgar Square 3 and was buried at Brompton Cemetery. I have not been able to find Mr Skidmore in the census of 1861 but by 1871 he was lodging at 12 St Stephens Crescent, Lambeth, where the following year he married Elizabeth Margaret Skelton (baptised 25 July 1813 at Merton, Surrey, daughter of Thomas Skelton, dealer, and Elizabeth) on 27 August 1872 at St Stephen's, Lambeth. The The code numbers of the heads of household found in my 2004 book are retained here. The known descendants of Edmund's sons Benjamin [35] and Job [36] can be found in Skidmore Families of Brettell Lane and Brockmoor, Staffordshire by Linda Moffatt at The Morning Chronicle 25 May

3 witnesses were Thomas Aggitts and Elizabeth Taylor. Mr Skidmore died in 1881Q1 aged 79 and his widow Elizabeth Margaret was a lodging house keeper in St Stephens Terrace, Lambeth. She died in 1885 said to be aged 68 and was buried on 23 November at St Pancras Cemetery. Detail from London Street Views, No. 22: Haymarket, p.4-5, Tallis, John, & Company, A son of Thomas Robert and Mary Ann (Scudamore) Skidmore, 276d. i. THOMAS ROBERT 8 the 3rd, baptised 3 September 1829 at St Martin in the Fields. He began work, apparently very young, as a clerk and was boarded out, at the time of the 1841 census, aged 12, in Gower Street North, St Pancras, perhaps with other young clerks and, by 1851, in Gloucester Street, St George the Martyr parish. He was involved in the family business and is found in a Trades Directory of 1864 as Thomas Robert Skidmore, china dealer of 19 Bartlett Buildings, Holborn. The firm of Skidmore & Sons, house agents of 19 Bartlett Buildings, Holborn and also of 50 Brecknock Road N, Islington, appear in a directory of He called himself a commercial traveller when he married Emma Mountford 4 on 23 December 1858 at West London Register Office. The witnesses were Alfred Mountford Harrison and Ann Harrison. She was recorded earlier, at the time of the 1851 census, as a widow (born about 1817 Lichfield, Staffordshire), a toy dealer at 62 Upper North Place, Grays Inn Lane, St Pancras, with her son Charles J. Mountford (born about 1841 in Derby). Mrs Skidmore was not recorded at home in the 1861 census for 19 Bartletts Buildings: she was living, a commercial agent's wife, in the home of her son Charles, a life and fire insurance agent and his wife Sarah at 116 Queens Road (District Savings' Bank), Brighton, Sussex. She died on 4 January 1863 aged 45 and was buried at Brompton Cemetery. 4 Said at this marriage to be a widow but also said to be a daughter of John Mountford, gentleman. She was perhaps the child baptised 12 June 1814 at St Mary's, Lichfield, daughter of John & Ann Mountford. She used her maiden name when recorded in the 1861 census too. 3

The buildings were bombed and totally destroyed in It was mentioned in Chapter 32 of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility: About this time, the two Miss Steeles, lately arrived at their cousin s house in Bartlett s Buildings, Holborn, presented themselves again before their more grand relations in Conduit and Berkley Street; and were welcomed by them all with great cordiality. austenonly.com collage.cityoflondon.gov.uk Thomas married secondly Mary Ann Welfare (born about 1829 in Bexhill, Surrey, perhaps a daughter of Stephen Welfare) in 1864Q1 in the Chelsea registration district. At the time of the 1871 census they were living at 8 Fassett Square, Hackney but moved to 50 Brecknock Road, Islington where Mrs Skidmore died of cancer on 19 September 1879, aged 56. At the time of the 1891 census Mr Skidmore was living at 6 Spurstow Terrace, Hackney with May White (called Skidmore, born about 1861 in the St Augustine's area of Bristol) and 1-year old daughter Ethel May Skidmore. May White married Charles Henry Yorston, a bookseller (born about 1819 in Oxford) in 1893Q1 and they were living at the time of the 1901 census at his premises at 19 Beaumont Buildings, Oxford. He married his third wife Mrs Mary Ann Bayford (born about 1830, daughter of Thomas Cox, deceased, a farm steward, and perhaps the widow of Arthur Bayford, coachman who died in 1867) on 2 July 1895 at the Register Office in Edmonton, Middlesex. James Cox and Martha Cox were witnesses. She died on 15 November 1900 in Edmonton Union Workhouse, aged 73 and Mr Skidmore was living alone at the time of the 1901 census at 34 Cowper Road, Stoke Newington, London. He died in 1905Q4 at 93 Palatine Road, Stoke Newington, aged 76. The child of Thomas Robert Skidmore and May White, i. Ethel May, born 20 Augut 1889 at 27 Richmond Road, Dalston. 5 72b. JAMES 6 SKIDMORE, son of Solomon [35a] and Eliza (Saunders) Skidmore, was baptised on 25 June 1780 at St Mary's, Whitechapel. He married Ann Clackston on 4 January 1801 at St Bride's, Fleet Street. Thomas Robert Skidmore and W. Finch were witnesses. Children of James and Ann (Clackston) Skidmore (T7), i. Sarah Saunders, born 27 December 1804, baptised 27 December 1805 at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster. She married Thomas Frederick Miles on 25 October 1823 at St Martin in the Fields. J. Skidmore and John Taylor were witnesses. She was living in 1841, apparently his widow and of independent means, with her children and her mother in Ann Street, Clerkenwell. By the time of the 1851 census, she was a charwoman, living in Lloyds Row, Clerkenwell with her daughter Fanny Nash (wife of Christopher Nash, gas fitter) and grandson Henry James Nash aged 1. I have not found Mrs Miles in later censuses. ii. Charles William Henry, born 21 November 1806, baptised 2 August 1807 at St Bartholomew the Great. 145b. iii. JAMES SOLOMON 7, born about He was a hairdresser and later a house painter in Clerkenwell who married Emma Young on 11 June 1832 at St Mary's, Islington (witnessed by John Chambers and Joseph Robert). She married James Edward Ray, a dealer of Bethnal Green (son of Thomas Ray, a bricklayer) on 25 December 1867 at St James', Bethnal Green - but had had children by him earlier than this. Emma's sister Ann was a witness. No marriages have yet been found for Frederick, the names of his wives being known from birth certificates and/or census information. There is confusion over the name of his first wife. Despite receiving one certificate from the General Register Office giving her name as Ann Padden, we believe she was Elizabeth Ann Calten (born about 1851 in Shoreditch and known as Ann). They were living by the time of the 1881 census in Elgin Street, Hackney. She 5
