Dear Friends of Catholic High, As a proud graduate and President of The Catholic High School of Baltimore, I feel privileged to witness the accomplishments of our students on a daily basis. Each day they demonstrate their empowerment to transform the world through academic excellence, responsible leadership and Christian community service. And each day we thank our alumnae, faculty, staff, families and friends for the gifts they give to help enrich our community. The close of the fiscal year marked the end of an historic three years. The Catholic High Board of Trustees committed to raising $3,000,000 in three years with the establishment of the first multi-year, multiproject philanthropic effort. The 75th Anniversary Campaign: Lighting the Way ~ Transforming the World, exceeded this goal, raising over $3.3 million through donations to Annual Giving and the 75th Anniversary Campaign. I would like to personally thank members of the Campaign Cabinet and especially Tonie Staudenmaier Wallace-Aitken 65 for chairing this exciting endeavor. I am pleased to present this document that includes a summary of our Annual Giving and the final 75th Anniversary Campaign Report. Our Board of Trustees and faculty/staff achieved 100% participation in both campaigns, representing their commitment to our mission and students. Annual Giving supports our operational budget while the Anniversary Campaign funded the renovation of our gym, building of a new auditorium production booth and endowment growth. Our Reunion Class Giving Program and Alumnae Awards Recipients are also highlighted. I hope you will take the time to enjoy and review the information included. As we look to the future, we are grateful for the commitment of our Board of Trustees, continued support of our alumnae, dedication of our faculty and staff, support from our family and friends, and empowerment of our students. On behalf of our entire community, I extend my deepest appreciation for your continued support and confidence in Catholic High s exciting future! Sincerely, Barbara D. Nazelrod, Ph.D. 68 President

6 Ally Lanasa 16 A graduate of the class of 2016, Ally Lanasa truly made the most of her time at Catholic High. She was involved in 18 different school and community service activities, including, but not limited to, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, JV Volleyball, Varsity Golf, Athletic Association, Campus Ministry, Canticles and Yearbook. She was also a volunteer at Catholic Charities and the Festival of Trees. Ally s favorite memory at Catholic High was being named Miss Catholic High. I was honored to have been given this title and to know that the faculty at Catholic High saw how diligently I worked and how dedicated I was to my academics, said Ally. In her spare time she enjoys writing, reading and visiting coffee shops. In the future, Ally hopes to become a journalist and author, and aims to publish a novel one day. 8 Bonita Bures Lee 60 Bonita Bures Lee, from the Class of 1960, was honored this year with the Lux Tua Luceat Service Award. Catholic High has always been involved with giving gifts to those in need at Christmas time. At one point, the gift drop-off moved from Catholic High to the home of Marcella Ziemski '50. Unfortunately Marcella passed away suddenly in 2008 and Bonita Bures Lee (Bonnie) didn t want this Catholic High tradition to stop. Because her family was always a part of this great venture, she decided to take over. What started out small, with gifts at Christmas time for those in need, for children, families and senior citizens, has grown into a giving campaign 365 days a year, all because of Bonnie s continued dedication to Catholic High. Bonnie continues the Catholic High tradition of letting her light shine and the legacy of Marcella Ziemski lives on. 10 Cam Bezdek 17 Award winning poet Maya Angelou once said, Nothing can dim the light that shines from within. Cam Bezek 17 has certainly let this quote inspire her during her time at Catholic High. Involved in Spanish Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, TRI M Music Honor Society, and the National Honor Society, Cam continually gets straight A s and appreciates her education at Catholic High. She is also a gifted member of the Jazz Choir and Brass Band. In fact, her favorite memory at Catholic High was being selected to the Chamber Winds as a freshman. This was a reminder to her about how she can shine at Catholic High and how hard work pays off. In her spare time, Cam enjoys cooking and baking. She also volunteers for her parish s Vacation Bible School during the summer, and you can find her attending and assisting at many Catholic High events. Right out of college, she accepted a position with Under Armour and had the opportunity to work with their Give-Back Program. Through this program she found that she loved helping those in need. So, in October of 2014, she drove 1600 miles to Austin, Texas to begin her service to AmeriCorps. After serving her term, Lindsay was hired as an adult literacy instructor for the Ascend Center for Learning, which is a program at the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas. 14 Madeline Arbutus 18 To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. This quote, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, is Sophomore of the Year, Madeline Arbutus favorite quote. I think it perfectly parallels Catholic High s motto, Let Your Light Shine, said Madeline. It s all about being empowered to be yourself as well as empowering others to do the same. Madeline lets her light shine in several Catholic High organizations including National Honor Society, English Honor Society, French Honor Society, Ambassadors, Ukulele Club, Mathletes Club and the Forensics Speech and Debate Team. In addition, she volunteers her time at Luna s House Animal Care and Education Center, St. Stephen Parish and the Harford County Swim League. Madeline is still undecided about what she wants to be later in life, but knows that she is well on her way to figuring it out because of Catholic High. 19 The Tau Society The Tau Society honors a committed and special group of benefactors who choose to include The Catholic High School of Baltimore in their estate plans or in any planned gift arrangement. Upon making an estate gift, these individuals become members of The Tau Society. To thank members, we invite them to participate in the annual President s Reception and recognize them in the Annual Report of Gifts. gifts for current programs A gift of cash is the most common gift, often given in the form of a personal check payable to Catholic High. Credit card gifts are becoming more popular because of our online capabilities and the rewards offered by particular credit card companies. Many donors prefer to make a pledge as it gives them the opportunity to complete their gift over a period of time. Theresa Welkie Archambault 65 Kathleen Anne Beres 66 Marlene M. There are several options available when dealing with gifts of property. An outright gift of a house, land or vacation property avoids capital gains tax and entitles the donor to a tax deduction for the full value of the gift. There are also options that allow the donor to give property and retain the use of it for his or her lifetime. More than 1,000 companies participate in matching gift programs. Many times, a gift can have a double effect because of an employer s matching gift. When making this type of gift, a donor must mail the matching gift form provided by his or her human resources department with the gift. gifts planned for the future A Bequest is a gift made by a provision in one s will naming Catholic High as beneficiary. It can reduce estate tax. A Charitable Gift Annuity allows the donor to receive benefits for his or her lifetime and to qualify for a charitable tax deduction. This form of support is attractive when one has highly appreciated assets. A Charitable Remainder Trust transfers assets to a trustee, who in turn manages the trust and pays income back to the donor for life, or for a specific period of time. When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to the school. Benefits include an income tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains tax (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an estate tax reduction. If Catholic High is named as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, the policy becomes eligible for a tax deductible gift. 25 YEARS SINCE 1939 LIGHTING THE WAY ~ TRANSFORMING THE WORLD Final Report A Message from the Campaign Chair Dear Friends of Catholic High, It was an honor to Chair this historic campaign for The Catholic High School of Baltimore. As a proud graduate and Chair of the Board of Trustees, it was an exciting adventure to be a part of the first multi-project, multi-year campaign. As the campaign progressed, witnessing the completion of the two major capital projects the renovation of the gym and the building of the new, cutting-edge production booth was exciting and very impressive. If you have not had an opportunity to visit and experience these new facilities, I encourage you to take the time to do so on your next visit to Catholic High in the near future. The Catholic High Board of Trustees committed to raising $3,000,000 in three years with the establishment of this philanthropic effort. The 75th Anniversary Campaign: Lighting the Way ~ Transforming the World, exceeded our aggressive goal, raising over $3.3 million through donations to Annual Giving and the 75th Anniversary Campaign. The pages that follow acknowledge the individuals who generously contributed to the campaign and helped us to not only reach, but exceed our goal. I am also pleased to share that we experienced 100% participation from our Board of Trustees, Campaign Cabinet and faculty/staff. In closing, I would like to personally thank everyone who made this campaign a successful and memorable one. Please know that every gift made a difference and supported our mission to empower young women through education! 75th anniversary campaign leadership CAMPAIGN CHAIR Mrs. Tonie Staudenmaier Wallace-Aitken 65 PRESIDENT Barbara D. 30 YEARS SINCE 1939 Renovating 75 year-old Gym Even though the rules and uniforms have changed, the 75 year-old gym has stayed the same. It is the same gym in which the 1951 varsity basketball team won its third consecutive Catholic High Scholastic Association Championship! WHAT THE NEW GYM OFFERS Renovations to the Catholic High gymnasium have greatly benefitted our success in athletics and have created a more positive environment for the entire school community. It has also created an environment for building teamwork, discipline and leadership. Supporting the Arts by Creating a State-of-the-Art Production Booth In 1948, Catholic High installed two large 35mm movie projectors in the balcony projection booth, as it was known then. Technology has tremendously evolved in the decades since 1948, and Catholic High has been successful in our efforts to lead in technology throughout the Archdiocese of Baltimore. WHAT THE NEW PRODUCTION BOOTH OFFERS The new, state-of-the art production booth has greatly enhanced the capabilities of the McCafferty Visual & Performing Arts Program. Programs in the arts are assets to the entire academic profile at Catholic High as they enable students to understand and appreciate the true value of creativity, imagination and expression. Catholic High students apply these creative skills to other subjects and to their lives as empowered women. Strengthening the Endowment for Financial Aid Catholic High s endowment is strategically invested and generates growth. Each year, endowment income is used to support scholarships and tuition assistance. Also, Catholic High is fortunate to have alumnae classes and individuals who have established endowed funds named after their class, in memory, or in honor of their family or friends. With a stronger endowment, we can continue to help many more students attend Catholic High. Annual Report
