2 THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, BUILDING AND DESIGN (SABD) CONCEPT Concept serves as a communication tool for SABD, its academics and students. It shares knowledge, achievements and activities connecting the dots and bridges information to the intended audience. Concept is presented in an artwork poster format, giving readers a creative and unique approach to discover the information inside. The interactive piece encourages the targeted audience to appreciate Concept as an artwork on its own. Established since 1998, the School of Architecture, Building and Design (SABD) brings a new level of commitment to built environment education by offering a range of programmes from foundation to bachelor degrees in the areas of Architecture and Quantity Surveying. SABD aims to groom professionals who can help realise the Malaysian government s vision of achieving a developed nation status by the year Courses are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). The Quantity Surveying degree is also accredited by the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS) and The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyor (RICS). SABD is committed to continuous improvement in the quality, aesthetics, functionality and efficiency of the built environment as a whole.
3 SABD STUDENT SOCIETY Established in 2004, Taylor s SABD Student Society comprises students who are pursuing their studies at SABD. In September 2011, a total of 32 students were nominated by their peers to serve as committee members and 12 were chosen for the job. They are: President : Lee Shing Yi Vice-president (Quantity Surveying) : Steven Sim Kuan Nian Vice-president (Architecture) : Pua Yu Min Treasurer : Henry Lee Yee Hoong Other committee members include Joshua Matthew de Souza, Lim Cheng Hong, Koh Cheng Shauwn, Matthaeus Tan, Chin Shik Wei, Andrew Ng Boon Yew, Wong Kung Nguon and Veronica Tan. The new committee members will assume the duties of the outgoing committee members and their first priority will be planning 2012 activities. 5 IDEAS! SABD senior lecturer Ms. Tamil Salvi Mari, regards teaching as a noble profession. With a Master s degree in Environment Studies from Universiti Putra Malaysia and a Bachelor of Science in Housing, Building and Planning (Hons) from Universiti Sains Malaysia, she spent five years in the architecture industry before discovering her true passion for teaching. I believe that one should only teach if he or she enjoys doing it. Throughout my 14 years of teaching experience, I have seen the difference between teachers who enjoy what they do and those who do not. You cannot fully carry out your duties as a teacher if you don t enjoy teaching, explained Ms. Salvi. To establish a positive student-teacher relationship, she says a teacher must be able to identify their students by names and understand their backgrounds. I do hope that my students enjoy my classes! Tamil Salvi Mari Having teachers with a good sense of humour also helps promote a more spirited classroom environment making it more conducive for learning among the younger generation. I do hope that my students enjoy my classes! Ms. Salvi adds. Ms. Salvi s research interest is in the area of environmentally sustainable design. Since joining Taylor s in 2004, she has presented her research papers in numerous conferences, such as the Teaching and Learning Conference at Taylor s University, the 4th International Conference on Built Environment in Developing Countries (ICBEDC 2010) and the Asian Green Construction Summit Singapore In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Ms. Salvi serves as Programme Director for the Bachelor of Science (Hons) (Architecture) and Stream Coordinator for Environmental Studies.

Send in your contribution to Normah Sulaiman at normah.sulaiman@taylors.edu.my GREAT ESCAPE TO THE UK As part of their Tales of Three Cities course work, a group of 19 SABD students went on an exciting 12-day study trip to the United Kingdom to explore its urbanism, architecture and built environment. Accompanied by lecturer, Dr. Sucharita Srirangam and Modern Architecture Studies in Southeast Asia Research Unit (MASSA) Research Executive, Pn. Nooridayu Ahmad Yusuf, the group travelled to London, York and Edinburgh. In addition to sightseeing, visiting notable buildings and discovering the well layered and structured urbanism of the cities, the students also worked on mapping the townscape of Edinburgh in a four-day short project. They then presented and shared their work with the faculty and students at Strathclyde University. Students pose with Mr. Micheal Angus and Dr. Kathy Li, lecturers at Strathclyde University.
7 The trip also included visiting several reputable universities, such as Edinburgh College of Art, Glasgow School of Art, Sheffield Hallam University and Edinburgh s Telford College and architecture firms, namely Terry Farrell and Partners and RMJM Architect, as well as the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London. An unforgettable visit to RIBA. Dr. Sucharita said the students learned a lot from the trip. They were exposed to the built environment in the three cities, met up with architecture academics, visited with industry professionals and better understood the different architectural practices in the UK. Students and lecturers check out students portfolios at Sheffield Hallam University with architecture lecturer, Mr. Gabriel Tang. Student Matthias Fabian Alexander said the trip changed his perspective on architecture. I ve been to the UK before, but this study trip was a totally different learning experience. It was interesting to know how architecture ideas were interpreted creatively into the actual work. It was definitely a good learning experience! Students explore historical buildings, such as the Clifford Tower in North Yorkshire. The group of students also did some sightseeing in the three cities, visiting places such as the British Library, Midlands and the Scottish borders.
8 PAM Annual Architecture Students Works Exhibition 2011 The Corallien Project, created by a group of 11 Bachelor of Science (Hons) (Architecture) students, won the Best Booth Display Award 2011 at the Exhibition. CHIEVEMENTS udos to the school and students for garnering a number of impressive achievements! Electrolux Student Think Eco Challenge With their innovative design of an Oil Barrel Bed, Foundation in Natural and Built Environments students, Hafida Abu Walid and Allen Jonathan Guansing, emerged champion in the Eco Challenge. They beat out 91 other competing designs from 20 local universities and colleges. 7Up Lipton Ice Tea Natural Arts Campus Design Challenge A risk-taking step of going abstract rather than ordinary did wonders for team We, Mirth from SABD as it clinched the grand prize in the Design Challenge. The winning team comprised second-year Bachelor of Science (Hons) (Architecture) students, Daecan Tee Jia Chyn, Mohd. Izzat Ahmad, Chew Aileen, Gabrielle Yip Zhi-Hui and Lim Zi Kang. PAQS Accreditation SABD s Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Hons) was accredited by the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS), making Taylor s University the first Malaysian private university to earn the significant accreditation. Penang Eco Retreat Student Ideas Competition 2010 SABD student, Lee Car Rol emerged champion in the Student Ideas Competition organised by the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM). She came up with the impressive idea of a multifunctional and eco-friendly wall design.
