3 Message from the CEO Becoming Stronger by Confronting Crisis Mary Gay Abbott-Young This past fiscal year the Mission faced one of the worst disasters in our 102 year history: the frightening possibility of having to close or severely limit our community s emergency homeless shelter services. The unthinkable could have happened if our generous community -- individuals, companies, foundations, and units of government -- had not come to the aid of the Mission. In late 2016, it became apparent that due to a variety of factors beyond our control, we were facing a staggering $400,000 deficit to continue to operate the shelter. We acknowledged in September, at a meeting attended by a broad cross-section of business, government, and foundation leaders, that the best we could do was to fund half of the deficit from our reserves through July 1, Fortunately, the worst of times became the best of times when more than $260,000 in contributions both big and small poured in (The Trenton Times editorial of April 9, 2017 entitled Financial lifelines saved Trenton shelter form losing home ). While we are not out of the woods yet, with potential further cuts in state and federal aid on the horizon, our generous community bought time and together we are working hard to craft a long solution to keep the shelter open. Events like last year s highly successful 13th Annual Shanks Mission Miniature Golf Tournament and our continued efforts to partner with area non-profits to reduce expenses and deliver services in a cost-effective manner, resulted in the Mission for the fifth year in a row earning a coveted 4-star rating for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency by Charity Navigator, America s leading independent evaluator of charities. As the Mission faces a funding crisis for the emergency shelter, the nation faces an epidemic of opiate abuse. The Mission is committed to providing counseling and supportive services so that individuals may reach their greatest potential through our continuum of substance abuse treatment programs. We are steadfast in this commitment to those we serve and participating in the State s announced effort to address the growing opioid epidemic through increased treatment and recovery efforts. We need your continued support to keep the emergency shelter open and maintain and expand our substance abuse treatment, job training, education, and continuum of housing programs. Together we can rebuild lives. In the News Reprinted with permission from The Times of Trenton $1 SUNDAY, APRIL 9, 2017 What happens if a homeless shelter becomes homeless? It s a situation that could have happened in Trenton if not for the generosity of people who came to the aid of the Rescue Mission of Trenton. Facing a $400,000 deficit, the Rescue Mission was in danger of closing its doors after June 30 if it could not secure a $200,000 infusion of cash. It put out an urgent call for help and the public responded big time. More than $260,000 in contributions both big and small poured in, according to Rescue Mission CEO Mary Gay Abbott-Young, who called the response phenomenal. Last year, the shelter served 1,332 people with more than 42,000 shelter stays. Providing a place to sleep, a place to cleanup and a place to get a hot meal is just the beginning of the services the mission provides. The shelter also has to deal with a host of problems that contribute to their clients being homeless. A survey of the shelter population in 2016 found that 29 percent had drug or alcohol problems, 32 percent suffered from a mental illness, 24 percent had a disabling physical condition, 30 percent had chronic health problems and 7 percent had developmental disorders. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week As Abbott-Young pointed out, it costs more to service clients with these disabilities. The catch now is that the Rescue Mission is doing more at a time when aid from the state and federal government is more doubtful. The Rescue Mission skirted financial disaster this time around, but without a doubt, it will face another crisis the next year and the years to follow unless something changes. It would be foolhardy for the shelter to expect more government aid, particularly from the Trump administration, which last month released its skinny budget. To its credit, the Rescue Mission is looking for other streams of revenue SERVING OUR COMMUNITIES SINCE 1882 to meet its budget needs and to offset the dwindling income from its salvage store. Last month, shelter officials met with nearly two dozen people from businesses, foundations and other groups to begin brainstorming ideas that would benefit both the community and the mission. We wish the shelter success in those efforts. But in the meantime, the Rescue Mission will have to depend upon the generosity of the public to carry them through. Become a tutor in our TEACH program working with residents on literacy or math. 5. Donate furniture, clothing, or bric-a-brac (all donations are tax deductible).
