Foreword Genealogy research is at best a soft science. It is an effort to compile family anecdotal stories, census records, wills, obituaries, deeds and just about any piece of information available. There often sight variations in the various official records. In general speculation is documented as such. There is also considerable questions asked of family members who with patience have help fill in many of the blanks. And a special thanks to Kimm Oltman & Marie Moyer, & Jack Oltman. Thank you! Anyway, enough of the fine print. Enjoy the read and please drop me a note to provide an update or a correction. You can drop me an at Murray@theOltmans.com 2

Ancestors of Murray and Ralph Oltman Generation No Murray Oltman, born June 13, 1890 in Sheridan, PA; died June 23, 1971 in Salisbury, MD. He was the son of 2. John David Oltman and 3. Rebecca Ann Adams. He married (1) Jane Baker Wise April 26, 1913 in Philadelphia, PA. She was born December 09, 1887 in Berlin. Md, and died August 12, 1980 in Salisbury, MD. She was the daughter of Mark Willis Wise and Georgiana Marshall. Notes for Murray Oltman: He took a correspondence course in drafting when he was approximately 17 (perhaps from Pittsburgh Civil Engineering School) he then went on to Carnegie Tech for two years. He first came to Berlin, MD around , presumably to see the farm his father had acquired. Murray later purchased the farm in Berlin from his mother and afterwards him and his wife, Jane Wise Oltman, moved there. He probably met Jane in church in Berlin. He was working at the Presteel Car Company in Philadelphia, PA (a division of Balwin Locomotive Co.) as a draftsman when they were married. The marriage was witnessed by Mary E. Wise and Rebecca Oltman. Jane probably got homesick and they returned to Berlin approximately six months after their marriage. By this time she was pregnant with a boy who was later stillborn. After arriving in Berlin, Murray tried farming for a while and then worked with a local plumber, Carson Baldwin. Eventually, in 1920, he went into the plumbing business for himself. Murray was visited at least once by the wife of one of his half brothers, Blanch Oltman, who lived in New Jersey. He also had relatives in New York whom he visited. We aren't sure of who they were or how they were related. Murray recalled that father was at times a stern man and once or twice pinned Murray 's ears back for avoiding a fight. In his younger years he took violin lessons and worked in a machine shop. He delivered papers as his father had a large paper route. He was active in the community and the church. Joined the Stevenson Methodist Church on 1/21/1916 and was President of Epworth League 5/1919, on the Board of Trustees, Treasurer of the Church and a member of the Methodist Men. He was extremely well liked and respected by those who knew him. An avid musician, he sang in the church choir and played a variety of instruments in several of the local bands. In his later years he maintained an extensive rose and flower garden. Murray died on June 23, 1971 while in a Peninsula General Hospital and is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Berlin, MD. 5

More About Jane Baker Wise: Burial: Evergreen Cemetery in Berlin, MD Marriage Notes for Murray Oltman and Jane Wise: Married at 10th & Green Street Parsonage by Rev. Lorah More About Murray Oltman and Jane Wise: Marriage: April 26, 1913, Philadelphia, PA Generation No John David Oltman, born March 01, 1837 in Brooklyn, NY; died August 05, 1909 in Pittsburg, PA. He was the son of 4. Jurgen Oltman and 5. Lucia Schlutern. He married 3. Rebecca Ann Adams March 11, Rebecca Ann Adams, born April 14, 1852 in Pittsburg, PA; died September 27, 1939 in Pittsburg, PA. She was the daughter of 6. Joseph Adams and 7. Sarah Ann Hoge. Notes for John David Oltman: He was raised by Matilda, his older sister. Matilda, we think, was married to a Doctor Stuttmeister. In a book owned by Rebecca Adams Oltman, there was a newspaper clipping of her death. We have not been able to locate the article at this time. John sold papers on street corners and even rattled bones for extra money. He often had to fight to keep the good locations. We think he fought in the Indian Wars and with William Walker in Central America. Family stories have it that he was out west somewhere, perhaps California, when he joined the last Walker expedition to Honduras. He barely escaped with his life and was able to get on a boat which took him to southern Florida. Appendix F is the final chapter of a book by James Jamison, a fellow filibuster who also fought with Walker. The last Walker expedition was in 1860, and it wasn't long afterwards that the Civil War broke out. He must have been somewhere in Pennsylvania at the time since he enlisted on 8/31/1864 for a period on one year in the C Company, 5th Regular Pennsylvania 6

Voluntary Heavy Artillery. His enlistment papers note that he was 5'6" and 119 pounds. He was wounded in the battle of Cold Springs (?) in Tennessee. He probably re-enlisted since at that time, the period the duration of service would have been for a few years only - not the duration. He was married twice. By his first wife, wife Ann Margaret Murray, he had six sons and one daughter, several we believe were glassblowers. As we understand it, only one of his sons, Walter Oltman, lived beyond young adulthood. Walter was in his 80s when he died in John's first marriage must have been prior to the Civil War since their oldest son, Andrew, was ~22 years old in The 1880 census has them living in the 4th ward, District 1, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Margaret's two sisters, Jane Murray and A. Murray were living with them at the time. At the time of his second marriage to Rebecca Adams, he was listed as being from Allegheny City, Pa. and Rebecca from Pittsburgh. They were married at Chartiers, PA. Some of the many places John lived during his lifetime include: Brooklyn, NY; Pleasantville, NJ; Chartiers, Allegheny City, and Pittsburgh, PA and Berlin, MD. John bought a farm in Berlin, MD for about $1,800 from a man he had met on a train - the grandfather of the Abbotts (across the street). The deed was recorded on 21 September 1908 and ownership was transferred from Anna J. Godfrey. This farm was part of the property which was once known as Mount Pleasant. Mount Pleasant was one of the original four tracts which encompassed Berlin and was patented to John Emmoll on 10 May By 1768, Henry Godfrey, who owned a great deal of the northern section of this tract built Engleside, the house which still sits across the road from the Oltman farm. The family moved to the Berlin home around this time and stayed there at least occasionally, until John's death. He often visited Ocean City and with little prompting, would play the fiddle for some of his new friends. John died in 1910 of cancer of the gall bladder or liver. He was buried at Pittsburgh. At the time of his death he had real estate holdings in Pittsburgh whose worth exceeded $50,000. An interesting side note, his namesake and great-grandson, John David Oltman was also born on March 1st. This was not realized until the 1980s. John is Buried at Union Dale Cemetery, 2200 Brighton Road Pittsburgh, PA, which is just down the street from (what is now) Highwood Cemetery where his first wife and several of their children are buried. The Union Dale plot was bought at Rebecca's request by her brother George Adams at the time of her husband's death. More About John David Oltman: Burial: Union Dale Cemetery, Pittsburg, PA Notes for Rebecca Ann Adams: She joined the Second Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh on 4 March

Rebecca stayed at the Berlin property after her husband's death, at least until 1913, perhaps longer. Rebecca was occasionally visited in Berlin by her brothers - George and John. Rebecca eventually returned to Pittsburgh where she continued to manage the family's real estate holdings. She often made the trip to Berlin to visit and was usually accompanied by her sister Josephine. Her son, Murray eventually bought the Berlin property and made it his permanent home. Rebecca died in 1939 and is buried at Union Dale Cemetery in Pittsburgh next to her husband. More About Rebecca Ann Adams: Burial: Union Dale Cemetery, Pittsburg, PA Marriage Notes for John Oltman and Rebecca Adams: Married at United Pres Church by Rev. Payton. More About John Oltman and Rebecca Adams: Marriage: March 11, 1887 Children of John Oltman and Rebecca Adams are: 1 i. Murray Oltman, born June 13, 1890 in Sheridan, PA; died June 23, 1971 in Salisbury, MD; married Jane Baker Wise April 26, 1913 in Philadelphia, PA. ii. Ralph Emerson Oltman, born November 16, 1893; died December 28, 1977; married Marie Keyer Voras January 17, 1916; born November 25, 1893 in Austria; died February 11, Notes for Ralph Emerson Oltman: Ralph married a Berlin girl, but was later divorced. He entered into the service during World War I. Ralph married Marie Keyer Voras from Vienna, Austria in 1916 and resided in Perkasie, PA. Their children included Irene, Ralph Jr., Elmer, David V. and Ann. More About Ralph Oltman and Marie Voras: Marriage: January 17, 1916 Generation No Jurgen Oltman, born November 01, 1790 in Dornbush, Parish of Drochtersen, Hanover, Germany; died 1844 in At sea?. He was the son of 8. Jacob Oltmann and 9. Anna Catherine Steffens. He married 5. Lucia Schlutern November 01, 1824 in Recum, Parish of Neuenkirchen, Germany. 8

5. Lucia Schlutern, born April 13, 1800 in Neuenkirchen, District of Blumenthal, Germany. She was the daughter of 10. Jurgen Henrich Schlutern and 11. Meta Margrette. Notes for Jurgen Oltman: Born in 1790 in Dornbush, in the parish of Drochtersen, Hanover Province, Germany to Jacob and Anna Catharina Oltmann. Jurgen (aka George) married Lucie (Lucia) Schluter and eventually moved to the United States. There seems to be a conflict between George and Lucie's marriage documents and entries in their family bible. The dates in the bible are somewhat blurred but seem to indicate they were married on 1 November However their marriage documents indicate that permission wasn't given by his parents or the authorities until the fall of George and Lucie came to the United States sometime between 1824 and His portraits depict him a a man with piercing blue eyes From what we've heard George was a ship's captain and was lost at sea around We still have a brass telescope which belonged to George It hasn't been determined yet whether he owned a ship or exactly where he sailed. There were many Oltmann (Oltman, Oltmanns and Oldmann) families in Hanover Province in the 1700 and 1800s. Additionally, there were several Oltmann families at Elsberth, which was just across the Weser River from Rekum. We've also found several Oltman(n)s from Germany who were in the US by the 1850's. We aren't sure how, if at all, they were related. Below is the translation of Jurgen & Lucia's marriage documents. The "Marriage License" At the request of my son Jurgen Oltmann, who is willing to engage himself matrimonially to the virgin Lucia Schlutern from Neuenkirchen in the district of Blumenthal, according to the enclosed baptismal certificate, with which he asked us parents to give our consent. Since I as father, Jacob Oltmann, and the mother, Anna Catharina, born Steffens (?), both born in the parish of Drochtersen, do not object, both of us certify it with our names and signature. Dornbusch, in the parish of Drochtersen, the 29th of September one thousand eight hundred and twenty-four. (Signatures) Jacob Oltmann Anna Catharina Oltmann Engel Von Allvorden as captain(?) 9

Lucie's Birth Certificate (mentioned above) Stamp: Kingdom of Hannover Stamp-Tax 2 GOOD PENNIES Conv. (?) Coin Excerpt from the parish-register at Neuenkirchen in the district of Blumenthal. That there was born to Jurgen Henrich Schluter, cottager in Recum, by his wife Meta Margrete, born Kuhlken, on the thirteenth of April of the year one thousand eight hundred (1800) a daughter. who received the name Lucie at the holy baptism on the twentieth of the same month. Such is confirmed by me, according to the truth, since the parish-register does not note anything else and no witnesses of the baptism are mentioned. Neuenkirchen, the 21st Of Sept Al_Dunsch. Pastor at Schwanewede and Vicar at Neuenkirchen Notes for Lucia Schlutern: We think Lucie may have died young since one of their sons, John, was raised by an older sister. More About Jurgen Oltman and Lucia Schlutern: Marriage: November 01, 1824, Recum, Parish of Neuenkirchen, Germany 10

Children of Jurgen Oltman and Lucia Schlutern are: i. Mary Lousia Oltman, born August 01, 1823 in Recum, Parish of Neuenkirchen, Germany. ii. Dorthia Matilda Oltman, born September 13, 1829 in New York, NY; died March iii. George Oltman, born November 13, 1830 in New York, NY. Notes for George Oltman: Born in New York, NY on 13 November 1830/31 to George and Lucie Oltmann. It is thought he ventured west, sometime around 1848, and was never heard from again. Post cards to John David Oltman from California signed your loving niece have been seen, but they may have been from the Adams side. They featured pictures of San Francisco and Anaheim, California. iv. Margrete Oltman, born September 08, 1832 in Brooklyn, New York. 2 v. John David Oltman, born March 01, 1837 in Brooklyn, NY; died August 05, 1909 in Pittsburg, PA; married (1) Ann Margaret Murray 1856; married (2) Rebecca Ann Adams March 11, Joseph Adams, born October 03, 1819 in Parish of Gateshead, Durahan County, England. He was the son of 12. Benjamin Adams and 13. Jane Gallimore. He married 7. Sarah Ann Hoge May 02, 1842 in Steubenville, OH. 7. Sarah Ann Hoge, born Abt. 1817; died July 06, 1885 in Allegany City, PA. She was the daughter of 14. George Hoge and 15. Rebecca Graham. Notes for Joseph Adams: It is not yet known when Joseph moved to the United States, it is thought Joseph was a doctor and eventually returned to England for reasons unknown. Joseph's family lived in Gateshead at least from although probably longer than that. His father, who was a glass cutter, had lived in Staffsford County before moving to Durham County. It's quite possibly his mother also came from Staffsford County. There were many Gallimores in Staffsford at the time. Although we know that her father's name was John, we haven't obtained additional data on him yet. Married by Rev. Commings (or Comminga) of Stunebville, OH. Notes for Sarah Ann Hoge: Sarah Ann Hoge presents somewhat of a dilemma. While much is know about her, and to some degree her family, it is not yet clear exactly who her parents were. Other documentation clearly points to the Hoge family whose first American occupant was William Hoge. William Hoge was born about 1660 and came to the Americas between 1680 and For now, the assumption is that George Hoge and Rebecca were her parents. 11

She joined the First Presbyterian Church of Steubenville, OH on 17 May The 1880 Census, of Allegheny, Allegheny, PA, notes a family unit as follows: " Sarah Adams, widow, age 60 (both parents born in PA) " Emma Hoge, female, age 68 " Rosa Adams, daughter, age 25 " Josephine Adams, daughter, age 23 " George Adams, son, age 20 We speculate that Emma is Evaline whose death was noted in the family bible (see below) and presumably Rosa is Rebecca Ann Adams. Although noted in the census as a widow, family lore has it that her husband eventually returned to England for reasons unknown. The following is a partial transcription from the Family pages of a bible owned by Rebecca Adams Oltman. It is assumed that the Hoge family members mentioned in the bible are related to Sarah Hoge Adams - Rebecca's mother. George Hoge died Wednesday morning September 11th, 1872 (blurred). (on a loose note card) George Hoge died on Wednesday, September the 11th, at 27 minutes of four o'clock in the morning and was interred on the 13th of September on Friday at -four o'clock. 20 Marriage: 1722 Children of John Hoge and Gwenthleen Davis are: 56 i. Jonathan Hoge, born July 23, 1725 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; died 1804 in Harrisburg; married Mary Walker ii. David Hoge, born 1735; married Martha Walker. Notes for David Hoge: David Hoge, born in 1735, married Martha Walker, and died December 5, David took a very active part in the revolution and was sheriff of Cumberland County. In 1769 he purchased three tracts of land in the Chartiers Valley which had belonged to the Hunter family, David, with the aid of his two sons William and John, founded the town of Washington, Pennsylvania. The town of Washington originally belonged to Sarbane Township, one of the thirteen original townships of the county, erected in July, On the 25th of September, 1785, the Court of Quatrer Sessions, upon a petition of the citizens requesting to be formed into a separate election district, endorsed the application, and the Supreme Executive Council confirmed the proceedings of the court on February 6, From its being originally a portion of Sarbane township, so many have been the changes that its present chartered boundaries are Canton and South Sarbane on the north, South Sarbane on the east, Franklin and South Sarbane on the south, Canton and Franklin on the west, being now entirely surrounded by new townships. The original name of the town was Bassett, which was laid out by David Hoge, Esq., of Cumberland County, the survey being made by David Reddick, Deputy Surveyor, and October 13, An other plot states that a true copy of the plan remains in the hands of John Lukens, Surveyor General, which was made November 4, 1784 by Edward Lynch, Deputy Surveyor. The second plot was made prior to the sale by David Hoge to his sons John and William. On October 18th, 1781 (five days after the town was laid out), David Hoge, Esq., the proprietor, conveyed to James Edgar, Hugh Scott, Van Swearington, Daniel Leet, and John Armstrong, as trustees of Washington County, a lot for a court house and prison in the town of Bassett, containing two hundred and forty feet square, being bounded by Monongahela (now Market) Street on the east, Ohio (now Beau) Street on the north, lot number 123 on the west, and Johnston's (now Cherry) Alley on the south. The name of the town was permanently changed to Washington on the 4th of November, 1784, the date at which the second plot was made, although we have the evidence of receipts for lots being given by the proprietor in October, 1781, both a s 19

Bassettown and Washington, for in the deed of David Hoge to John and William Hoge, of November 7, 1785, it is stated that the said David conveys to his sons, John and William, a tract of land in Washington County, on the waters of Chartiers' Creek, and known by the name of Catfishes Camp, containing eight hundred acres, which was to include the town of Washington, excepting t he southwest forth of said town, which said David reserved for himself. Subsequently on the 10th of March, 1787, he also conveyed the remaining southwest forth of the town to his sons, John and William. The deed also mentions the fact of the name of the names of the streets being changed, based upon the second plot of The act of the General Assembly of March 28, 1781, directs the electors to meet at the house of David Hoge at the place called Catfishes Camp, to hold their elections and courts until a court house shall be built. To understand the Hoge purchase, we will state that there were three tracts of land originally surveyed and purchased by David Hoge, as follows; one from Martha Hunter dated November 4, 1769, containing three hundred and thirty nine acres and sixtynine perches, and called "Martha's Bottom." The second was purchased from Joseph Hunter, November 11, 1769, containing three hundred thirty one acres and twenty one perches, called "Grand Cairo." The third purchased from Abraham Hunter, surveyed November 11, 1769, containing three hundred thirty nine acres and twenty one perches, called "Catfishes Camp." Generation No William Hoge, born 1660 in Musselburgh, Scotland; died Bet He married 225. Barbara Hume Abt Barbara Hume, born 1670 in Paisley, Scotland. Notes for William Hoge: The year was 1660 and Charles II had just become King of England ending many years of civil war. In that same year, William Hoge was born in Musselburgh, Scotland. Some time between i680 and 1682 William boarded a ship, probably headed for New York. Also aboard the ship were Barbara Hume who was born in 1670 in Paisley, Scotland, and her parents who died during the trip. William took charge of Barbara and left her with relatives in New York while he went on to establish himself in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Around 1695 he married Miss Hume and for a time lived in Perth Amboy. Accounts vary, but it is possible that William and Barbara moved from New Jersey to 20

Penn's Lower Three Counties (Delaware). What is known is that the family relocated to Lancaster County Pennsylvania around 1729 and in 1735 the entire family except for their son John (b. 1699) moved to the Valley of Virginia (Kernstown), about three miles south of Winchester. William died between 1745 and 1750 leaving behind a large family with issue as follows: Joseph of Virginia, no further knowledge; Mary of Virginia, no further knowledge; George of North Carolina, attorney, judge of the Supreme Court; John of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, born in 1699; William of Winchester Virginia married a Quakeress; Margaret married Dr. Robert White; Alexander of Winchester, Virginia; attorney, member First Congress USA; James, first wife was Agnes ----, second wife was Nancy Griffith; descendants include President of Hampton College and Reverend Moses D.
