3 2016 Annual Luncheon Keynote Speaker Author of: Building Art: The Life and Work of Frank Gehry (2015) Why Architecture Matters (2009) Building Up and Tearing Down: Reflections on the Age of Architecture (2009) UP FROM ZERO: Politics, Architecture, and the Rebuilding of New York (2004) Paul Goldberger Why Design Matters design can improve life, and change it for the better, for virtually everyone, and not just the people who would think of themselves as patrons of design. Paul Goldberger, who The Huffington Post has called the leading figure in architecture criticism is now a Contributing Editor at Vanity Fair. He began his career at The New York Times, where in 1984, his architecture criticism was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Criticism, the highest award in journalism. From 1997 through 2011 he served as the Architecture Critic for The New Yorker, where he wrote the magazine s celebrated Sky Line column. He also holds the Joseph Urban Chair in Design and Architecture at The New School in New York City and was formerly Dean of the Parsons School of Design, a division of The New School Spring Keynote Speaker Janette Sadik-Khan Creating an Urban Revolution Janette Sadik-Khan is the Chair of the Strategic Advisory Board of the National Associan of City Transportation Officials (NATCO). She was commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportaiton from , known best for converting a segment of Broadway in downtown NYC into a pedestrian plaza. She is also the author of (Street-fight: Handbook for an Urban Revolution) an urban epic as audacious as the changes Janette Sadik-Khan made to the map of New York City. (Jan Gehl). Janette Sadik- Khan is An urban visionary who cuts through the gridlock.

4 Nashville Civic Design Center Recent Projects and Programs Shaping the Healthy Community: The Nashville Plan A long-term project by NCDC focusing on the relationship between the built environment and public health. Six built environment factors are explored in detail, including: housing, transportation, open space and parks, food resources, walkability, and neighborhood design/development, throughout a variety of community types. Shaping the Healthy Community: The Nashville Plan was released by Vanderbilt University Press in April Implementation of this project has begun with a grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Reclaiming Public Space NCDC s Reclaiming Public Space elevates the quality and expand the diversity of public spaces in Nashville. The best public spaces foster community, elevate quality of University of Tennessee Knoxville Design Studios Nashville Civic Design Center (NCDC) maintains a strong partnership with the University of Tennessee Knoxville College of Architecture and Design (UTK CoAD). Through this partnership, NCDC coordinates various studies throughout the year that allow architecture students to study potential real world projects in Nashville. As a part of this collaborative effort, NCDC partners with UTK CoAD faculty member TK Davis to create many conceptual projects for Nashville. As a result, many of the students projects often turn into real life developments. Citizenship in Action Our mission is to educate the next generation of informed citizens in how the world is built around them. Students and community members will develop critical thinking and problem solving skills through the context of urban design and

5 life, and connect us to our city and, more importantly, to each other. Tactical Urbanism Organizers (TURBO) and the annual PARK(ing) Day event are two programs in this initiative. Urban Design Forum, CityThink, PechaKucha Night NCDC s Urban Design Forum was founded in 1995, and meets monthly to discuss how DESIGN impacts Nashville. The Forum features innovative projects, informative speakers, and lively discussions. CityThink is a monthly lunch or breakfast program discussing current urban design practices. These programs are open to the public and take place at NCDC. PechaKucha Night (PKN) is a presentation format that makes for concise and fast pace talks. NCDC hosts PKN quarterly, with at least 8 presenters from the community showcase their work, passions or hobbies. civic engagement. Students and community members will investigate how urban design concepts affect the local environment and quality of life, and develop ways to change/ improve their neighborhood. Research NCDC: Promotes the Ten Principles of The Plan of Nashville; educates the public about civic design through: lectures by prominent speakers; presentations on the history and practice of urban design; continuing education opportunities for design and development professionals; provides professional staff and highly qualified design interns to consult on civic and other community development projects; facilitates public dialogue about civic design and its impact in Nashville; researches and publishes reports on various civic design issues.
