Wheeler receved hs degree at Western from Huxley College of Envronmental Studes. / Grst of Goldsmth BY CHRIS GOLDSMITH / Drector of Alumn Relatons By now, all of us have heard about the ntatves for educaton Governor Booth Gardner brought before the 50th State Legslature. We ve heard, too, about the bran dran and that outdated, falng equpment s plagung our major research nsttutons, causng some of ths state s best and most productve researchers and teachers to fold up camp and move to states wth greener pastures. Make no mstake about t Each of these elements s affectng Western, too! Lack of support staff and equpment plus low salares have already prompted some of Western s strongest faculty members to pack up ther tents for better offers. And durng the next decade, nearly onehalf of Western s current faculty wll leave or retre. Unless we are able to compete wth our peer nsttutons across the country, tomorrow s faculty stars won t even consder teachng at WWU. The Governor s educaton ntatve calls for vast mprovements n both the K-12 and hgher educaton programs of Washngton state. Legslators Republcans and Democrats alke are n agreement that Washngton must ncrease ts fundng for educaton, and most agree that ths s the yearjo do t. We would also note that Governor Gardner provded the Legslature wth a revenue plan to fund hs educaton proposal. That revenue plan called for extendng the state sales tax to servce busnesses," reducng the sales tax rate by V2 percent; and lowerng the busness and occupaton tax. Intal House and Senate versons of the budget changed the revenue package n dfferent ways, but the need for ncreased spendng on educaton was clearly recognzed. Durng several legslatve dnners put on pror to the current sesson and n numerous subsequent meetngs between WWU admnstrators, faculty, students and alumn and lawmakers, one pont was clearly heard: Legslators want to hear from ther consttuents on ths ssue. It was your voces that helped lawmakers become convnced that mprovng educaton s a major concern to Washngton s resdents and ~ voters. Western alumn and frends played a major role n helpng WWU and educaton n general by contactng ther legslators on Western s behalf. Western s current and future students, faculty and staff all thank you for your postve response. 5 Western grad returns to campus wth her own one-woman comedy WWU alumna Jayne Murhead brought her own brand of zany, zesty comedy to Western s Old Man Theatre recently. In a one-woman show ttled Welcome to Jayne Country, the popular Seattle chanteuse ntroduced sx ctzens of Jayne Country : characters lke Edth Plar, the lttle songstress who sngs about food: and No Name, a hgh school grl who can t fnd a boyfrend and feels unfulflled A Madonna-wannabe, sad Murhead. The muscal revue remnded Denns Catrell of Western s theatre/ dance department of Murhead s hstory. Recallng her varous roles between 1970 and 1973 n Man of La Mancha, Charle Brown and The Lesson, he sad: She s a barrel of energy, devoted to performance: an entertaner who can sng, dance and act. Murhead was among the frst company members n Western s Summer Stock whch, snce 1971, has produced muscals, comedes and chldren s plays at Western. I thnk ths had an mportant effect on her, Catrell sad. She could sng and dance wthout havng to run off and study bology. After graduaton, Murhead began work n Seattle at The Cabaret on Poneer Square and wth commercal work for Ben Brdge Jewelers. Snce then she has worked at varous theaters ncludng the Seattle Repertory Forum and the Skd Road. Snce jonng the Actors Equty seven years ago, Murhead has played leads n performances of Angry Housewves at the Poneer Theater and The Rocky Horror Pcture Show at The Empty Space. She wll return to work wth Argry Housewves untl May and then wll begn work agan wth The Rocky Horror Pcture Show n June. Recently, Murhead opened a show wth Greg Thomas, also a Western alum, ttled Black and Whte n Lvng Color. The muscal revue, ncludng two acts ttled In Amerca and Alen Lason, played through February 21 at Seattle s Poneer Theater. The show ncluded pop-orented songs and scrpted peces that Greg and I wanted to perform, she sad. A group of people are crowded around a table playng PIctonary, the latest boardgame craze snce Trval Pursut. Suddenly he, who admts to not beng able to sketch and to never wnnng at the game, s the most popular person n the room. The smple reason behnd hs popularty Is he, wth partner Terry Langston, s PIctonary. The story of PIctonary began after hs 1981 graduaton from Western wth a degree n busness admnstraton. Now Western and the psycho Ward, as he refers to a fourth-floor wng where he lved n Kappa Hall for two years, are far behnd hm as he sts In hs new offce on the shores of Lake Unon n Seattle. PIctonary was somethng I used to do at partes. I d get a dctonary, pont to a word and say You do that, and you do that, and have people sketch t. They would go crazy and I d wnd up takng over partes, Angel sad. PIctonary Is bult around the very same dea players, workng as partners, sketch ther way around the board, drawng clues wthout the help of letters or numbers untl they reach the fnal square and correctly dentfy the fnal word. The dea for just somethng and ts ultmate success started long before Western. I could never work a 9-to-5 job. Never have except whle In hgh school. I ve always had many Ideas but ths Is the frst one I followed through on and dd anythng wth. Ths one happened to be the rght Idea, Angel sad. The rght dea Angel modestly refers to s the marketng of hs ht party game begnnng June 1,1985. The second order went to 10,000 that fall after the frst 1,000 were sold. It was tough gettng t on the shelves. There s not a lot of shelf space out there, he sad. I d go around Seattle wth It under my arm, go Into a store and say, HI, I m Rob Angel. I ve got a board game. What do you thnk? It s a lot easer beng local because you can ht about 15 stores a day, get two to three accounts and feel pretty good about It. In the begnnng t was, We sold another game today! We d dance around the room. One game was all t took to get us excted. That was a lot of fun. Now t s rollng along on ts own, he added. PIctonary has grown up and now s fllng store shelves natonwde. Angel won t commenon how many games have been sold and how much money has been made. I could gve you the exact number, but I don t gve t out. If people knew how many games we ve sold, they could draw ther own conclusons on how much money we ve made. It would let the competton know how well we re dong, he sad. The busness of PIctonary has settled down and s no longer the.2- hour-a-day job It was. Angel has moved the busness out of hs apartment where t was orgnally based, and he s able to leave hs work at the offce now. In the begnnng t was Let s make some money wth ths see what we can do wth t, he sad. As thngs progressed, there was a tme when I would go to bed so I could wake up that much sooner and get back to work. I was the happest guy In the world. The thng now Is the challenge of t. And now t s tme to start lookng for a new challenge. New challenges for Angel are both professonal and personal. He s workng on a new set of word cards for the game to be released ths fall, and he descrbes hmself as a professonal learner. I can t cook, he sad, so cookng lessons have been added to hs schedule. Scuba classes start n the sprng. As Angel prepares to take the day off and go skng-another addton snce the success of PIctonary he adds, I want to enjoy myself. I ve never had so much fun, whether t s learnng or workng 16 hours a day. I thnk PIctlonary'Is gong to be successful long enough that I don t have to work 16 hours a day unless I want to. Wth the 50th Washngton State Legslature now In full swng, we thought t an opportune tme to note those lawmakers who graduated from or attended Western. Lsted below are those llustrous Western alumns: Sen. Paul Conner, 2th Dstrct comprsng Clallam, Jefferson and part of Grays Harbor countes. Apponted to the Senate n Served 10 terms In the House and was elected to the Senate n Rep. John W. Betrozoff, 5th Dstrct representng N.E. Kng County. Thrd term n the House. Rep. Denns Braddock, 2nd Dstrct comprsng all of Whatcom County except the southern porton state centennal f you really want to truly I celebrate the comng state centennal, make t a personal celebraton. Do somethng about your famly tree. Go through those old bushess records and decde whch of them tells the hstory of your frm. That s the message beng delvered by Roland L. DeLorme, char of the hstory department at Western, as he speaks about the centennal to servce clubs and other organzatons In Whatcom County. DeLorme s a member of Western s Centennal Commttee, whch wll develop a seres of recommended actvtes for the Unversty s partcpaton n the state centennal observance begnnng Nov. 11, DeLorme sad that hs personal contrbuton wll be a hstory of Western Washngton Unversty, part of whch wll nvolve an oral hstory project wth alumn and wth retred faculty. He sad he plans to fnsh the comprehensve hstory of the nsttuton durng the school s centennal In However, some type of publcaton depctng memores of student days at Western could concevably be publshed durng the state centennal celebraton. Other Unversty centennal commttee members are Keth Murray, retred WWU hstory professor, char; Bert Rhoads, retred of Bellngham. Thrd term In the House. Rep. Paul Kng, th Dstrct comprsng Snohomsh and part of Kng County. Thrd term n the House. Rep. Km Peery, 17th Dstrct comprsng Skamana, Klcktat and southeast Clark countes. Apponted to the House In 1985; elected n 1986 and Rep. George Walk, 25th Dstrct representng north central Perce County. Servng hs sxth term n the House. We also should note that Secretary of State Ralph Munro and Bll Gleason, assstant secretary of state, also are Western alumn. Make t a personal celebraton " W' archvst of the Unted States who s now drector of the WWU graduate program n archves and records management; and James Scott, drector of the WWU Center for Pacfc Northwest Studes. The hstory department has an ambtous agenda for the centennal, accordng to DeLorme. It ncludes establshment of credt courses and workshops, as well as workng closely wth the publc and varous organzatons to enhance opportuntes for ctzens n the regon to learn about the state s hstory. He added that the hstory department s workng on a Natonal Endowment for the Humantes grant proposal n collaboraton wth the Bellngham School Dstrct. If receved, the grant would fund a summer, 1988, nsttute n local hstory to work wth selected teachers n all Whatcom County school dstrcts. The purpose of the workshop would be to develop currcular materals on the hstory of the county for classroom use. In the meantme, DeLorme sad, ctzens should thnk about the centennal and ways n whch they mght personally contrbute to t. And, he added, hopefully the observance of the centennal wll create a heghtened awareness of the Importance of fndng and preservng our own hstory. Rdsum / Wnter 1987

These derogatory phrases, and more, have been appled to that modern electronc mracle, televson. But recently some forward-lookng educators have seen not the negatve mplcatons of televson but ts postve potental for brngng knowledge to the publc. These ndvduals have desgned a new method of educaton, the telecourse, n whch televsed programs form an ntegral part of the learnng process. Western s Independent Study Offce offered one such course. The Afrcans, durng fall, Twentytwo students from throughout the hrored n Students vewed nne weekly broadcasts and read assgnments from three texts. Two optonal class sessons were held. The course was very well receved by students, wth especally hgh prase for the nterestng and well presented televsed segments of the course. What benefts are derved from combnng broadcast lessons wth books and lectures? For students who are unable to attend class on campus, the televsed lessons provde an audo-vsual experence whch brngs the subject to lfe n a way that books alone cannot always do. In many cases, as wth The Afrcans, fnancng Is avalable from several sources, allowng broader and deeper coverage of the topc than Is possble wth more lmted resources of a sngle nsttuton. Of course televson programs can never replace a classroom settng or supplant the readng of textbooks. Students cannot ask questons of a TV moderator nor can they underlne pertnent passages for later revew. But as a tool to enhance and llustrate concepts rased n the prnt materals, vdeo segments can ncrease the boundares and depth of the total course. Stay tuned for further class offerngs! ""VI J. Accordng to Carolyn Hnds, drector of student fscal servces, Western has not receved captal fundng for the NDSL program for four years. She s confdent that the new bllng servce wll gve borrowers mproved servce, she added. Theater alve n Northern Ireland That theater survves In Northern Ireland s a mracle a trbute to ts people, sad dramatst and theater nstructor Conor O Malley. The natve of Northern Ireland, who teaches theater at Unversty College, Dubln, talked on campus recently about drama In Northern Ireland. "It s a mracle that any plays at all are produced In Belfast, he sad. The country has been torn snce 1922 by cvl war between two cultures, Protestants and Catholcs, each wth dfferent peoples and values. Both cultures hold vews that are repressve to theater, accordng to O Malley. The Presbyteran Purtan tradltomregardecrttteaterls"" godless entertanment, whle Catholc clergy suppressed drama that explored certan moral and socal ssues. There s no drect censorshp, sad O Malley. But there are many ways of closng a theater fundng s cut or credtors demand payment al at once. As long as the problems and volence contnue, so also do the forces Inhbtng actvty. Arbus photographs exhbted on campus Dane Arbus ( ) chose to systematcally explore the noton of normalcy. Armed wth her camera, whch Norman Maler once commented was lke gvng a hand grenade to a baby, Arbus photographed her subjects, usng an ntmate, spare, brutal style that caused the fears, desres and humanty of her subjects to surface on ther faces. Arbus dd not begn photographng untl she was 38 years old. Then she produced over 80,000 negatves n the dozen years untl her sucde n She traveled through crcuses, sdeshows, nudst camps, st-ns, love-ns, bondage houses, morgues, clubs, flophouses, brothels. Boy Scout meetngs and gatherngs of the elderly. She photographed the bzarre dwarfs, tatooed men, transvesttes, gants and ordnary people. At the expense of her own well-beng and ultmately her santy, Arbus was able to mantan an nnocence and clarty of vson, whle explorng some of the darker and more ambguous areas of human experence. An exhbton of Arbus photographs was dsplayed on campus recently at the Western Gallery. Sponsored by the Gallery and Western s art department, the exhbt was curated by Rod Slemmons, assocate curator of photography at the Seattle Art Museum. He noted The Bll Cosby Show, n whch Cosby has created n the 1980s a new mage of a famly whch radates love no matter what color, race or gender. People s real lves aren t that one-sded. Dana and her husband, Rand,a Farhaven professor and lawyer, have recently completed a challengng study of the values whch lawyers nvoke when makng professonal decsons Involvng ethcs and socal respgnsblty. The Jacks ntervewed 38 Washngton state lawyers to explore how lawyers balance what developmental psychologsts call the moralty of justce wth the moralty of care. Wth the advent of substantal numbers of women In the professon, the Jacks were partcularly Interested n Investgatng the role that gender plays In the choce of moral ethcs. The study was based on paradgms developed by Harvard professor Carol Glllgan, author of In A Dfferent Voce. Dana, who has worked wth Glllgan, was especally nterested n seeng whether Glllgan s fndngs could be appled to a professonal group such as lawyers. Glllgan s study has provded a vocabulary and concepts for dscussng the ethcal Issues of justce and care and ther relatonshp to gender, sad Rand. The Jacks dscovered that. Indeed, wth the lawyers Intervewed, gender Is a major factor n decsonmakng based on the moralty of care. We certanly found male attorneys who thought wth the moralty of care, and females who thought wth the moralty of justce, sad Rand. But, when the study measured men aganst women, 63 percent of women lawyers exhbted the moralty of care, compared wth 23 percent of men. The splt was especally evdent when the hypothetcal stuatons Involved chldren. Wth the lawyers Jntervewed the Jacks found that gender rather than type of law practced, age or experence predcted moralty of care. If you go around wth one eye long enough, you don t realze you ve lost depth percepton s the analogy Rand uses In dscussng the need to temper justce wth care. We re tryng to restore depth percepton by ntroducng the values of care In addton to justce, not nstead of. Infusng the moralty of justce wth that of care broadens the perspectve and extends the sense of responsblty, clam the Jacks. Lawyers who brng both ethcs to a stuaton have a more real-lfe pont of vew than lawyers wth only the justce outlook. The power of the study, say the Jacks, s In the quotatons obtaned from the lawyers ntervewed. These were artculate, educated people whose dally work nvolves consderaton of these ssues, says Dana. Wth women comprsng 0 percent of law school students n 1985, the queston of ethcs of justce and care wll make Itself felt In law schools and ultmately n the legal communty. Law schools n fact, the entre system of justce shoufd begn to accommodate the moralty ' of care, says Rand. Our concluson s that the justce moralty s central and essental to the system, he adds. It would be dangerous, of course, to swng too far toward the moralty of care. The real challenge s how to preserve the core of the system and, at the same tme, nfuse carng concerns.
