RESEARCH CURRENT BOOK PROJECT Radical Alliances: Economics and Feminism in English Women s Writing, Under contract with the University of Toronto Press This project looks at women writers including Olive Schreiner, George Egerton (Mary Chavelita Dunn Bright), Amy Levy, Michael Field (Katharine Bradley and Edith Cooper), and Virginia Woolf and their pioneering visions of female economic collaboration at the turn of the century. In the face of existent economic models, these feminist authors imagined a range of women's bonds, such as sisterly kinship, intellectual cooperatives, professional coalitions, and aesthetic marriages. Their writings sought to redefine the gendered marketplace and women s pleasurable and productive opportunities. Little Wanderers: British Home Children in Canada -- Second book project, in process This project focuses on the literary history of British Home Children in Canada and the role that Victorian slum fiction played in child migration schemes as a form of empire-building. Little Wanderers seeks to illuminate the origins of these child relocation programs within a transatlantic network of nineteenth-century literary ideas a network that includes not only English and Canadian literature, but also American writings. I am particularly interested in how this transnational history raises critical questions regarding the ethical representation of poverty and the interconnections among slum reform and colonial narratives and subjectivities. 1
