From the days of hand picking cotton in the fields all day and plucking feathers from geese to make beds and pillows to seeing the first talking movie, she has put her memories in black and white to pass down to generations to come. Her 53-page book, "Remembering the Past: Memories of Growing Up," was published by Work/Shop Press Inc. in Atlanta in March The 91-year-old Mrs. Honeycutt worked for nine years, compiling memories for the book by 26

27 hand and by tape recorder. Her oldest daughter, Carol Honeycutt Hollahan, transcribed her work. Mrs. Honeycutt is the youngest of 15 children, and the only one still alive. She said she wrote this book of memoirs for the younger generations and the ones to come. "I did it for the children and the grandchildren," she said. Mrs. Honeycutt said that it s important to her that her family knows about their ancestors and where they came from, and that when she passes away, no one will be left to tell them. The book starts off with memories of her early childhood growing up with so many brothers and sisters and continues through her married years. "We had a very good childhood," she said. "We made our own toys and we played with each other." The book recites memories of stories her grandparents told her, including one about hiding food and wagon wheels in a cave in the well from invading Yankee soldiers during the Civil War. Mrs. Honeycutt gave a first-hand account in the story of everyday chores such as using an iron that had to be heated on the stove, filling oil lamps because there was no electricity and lowering foods that could spoil into the well where it was cool in the summer time. Her mother, the oldest girl of 17 children, made all the clothes for her husband and 15 children, looming the fabric at home from cotton and dying it different colors with different colored leaves. She recalled seeing "Danny Boy," the first talking movie, on a grade school trip to Raleigh. The book follows her life through the Great Depression, during which she was married to James Honeycutt. Struggling at first, Mr. Honeycutt was lucky to find a job that paid $12.12 per week at the time. In 1950 they were able to build their own home, the home in which Mrs. Honeycutt still lives in Coats. It then cost $6,500 to build. Across the street is the nearly dilapidated house where she was born and grew up. "I used to pick cotton right where this house sits," Mrs. Honeycutt said. "All of this land around here was ours, and it was all tended with mules and plows." Although Mrs. Honeycutt vividly remembers her past, she is not living it. More active than some adults half her age, she takes water aerobics classes three times a week at Campbell University, volunteers by delivering meals at senior centers, and spends long hours gardening and tending to her yard every day. In addition, traveling the world has been a hobby of hers for the past several years. She has been to countries such as France, England, Germany, Korea and Argentina, journeying with her two daughters. When she was younger, she said, she didn t have the time or the money to travel, so she s making up for it now. Although she travels, she always returns to Harnett County. "This is home," she said. "I ve never had any desire to live anywhere else." With more than 50 copies of her book printed, she said she ll have to print more soon. 27
