Ledyard, CT Re: REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS AND PROPOSAL NEW POLICE STATION, LEDYARD, CONNECTICUT Bid # (Due: 2:00pm on August 30, 2013) Town of Ledyard, Please accept this letter of interest (one original & twelve copies) with attached supporting material in response to your recent Request for Qualifications/Proposals to provide complete design services to construct a new Police Station and related site improvements at 737 and 741 Colonel Ledyard Highway and to provide construction oversight and consulting services in conjunction with a Construction Manager as advisor. The project also involves demolition of several buildings and parking lot, utility and site improvements at the Town Hall complex and surrounding area. With the submittal of this response, I accept all terms, conditions and requirements contained in the RFP/Q. Attached is an introduction to Strong Design Associates, Architects for your review and consideration for hopeful inclusion in your short-list of intended consultants. INCLUDED IN THE REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS & PROPOSAL: This Letter of Interest including the required Fee Schedule. Introduction to Strong Design Associates, Architects. Resume of firm Principal. Proposed Organizational Chart. Certification of Registration to practice Architecture in the State of Connecticut which indicates that Strong Design Associates, Architects is not debarred, suspended or otherwise prohibited from professional practice by any Federal, State or local agency. A Certificate of Liability Insurance as requested in the RFQ/P will be provided if selected for service.

3 Architect / Principal INTRODUCTION Architect J. Alan Strong, A.I.A. began the firm Strong Design Associates in 1986 in order to better serve the public in the capacity of Architectural Design, Planning, Interiors, Project Management and Construction Administration. This organization of qualified design, construction and consulting personnel will bring your commercial or residential project from initial concept into full completion. As indicated below, Al has a full history and thorough understanding of various aspects of Architectural contexts with a particularly strong portfolio of projects in the educational market. In the past he has been involved on various projects as represented in the following illustrations: The new Parker Memorial Community Center replaces the neighborhood s 50 year old existing facility. As Project Architect / Project Manager, Al was responsible for the progress of this project from Construction Documentation through Construction Administration and Closeout. Renovations and an addition to Chaffee Hall at the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut in This was a renovation of an existing gymnasium into a state of the art 300 seat Multipurpose Performing Arts Theater and classroom addition.
4 Architect / Principal Breakthrough Magnet School, Hartford, Connecticut. Project Management responsibilities included coordinating all design disciplines from Concept Design through Construction Administration. This 60,000-square foot, Pre-K through 8 th Grade Elementary School development was Connecticut s first design/build school project. Al designed this 10,000 square foot addition to the Dodd Middle School in Cheshire, Connecticut in The addition was necessary to relieve the existing facilities current overcrowded student population. Longmeadow Elementary School in Middlebury, Connecticut designed in 1995 was one of Al s accomplishments in the Design Development aspect of public education. Al was responsible for the Design Development & Construction Document development of this 86,000 square foot facility which was completed in 1996.
5 Architect / Principal Saxe Middle School in New Canaan, Connecticut was a project Al was involved with in He was responsible for production of construction documents for this facility. This project involved 120,000 square feet of additions to an existing 100,000 square foot fully renovated public school for 6 th through 8 th grade students. The multiple additions included a new Media Center, Gymnasium, Cafeteria and Music Wing. The Lexington School in Lexington, Kentucky was one of Al s endeavors into private education. Al was responsible for code compliance during the Design Development phase of this project. The project consisted of multiple additions and a full existing facility renovation to this prestigious private elementary school. This design is reflective of the school s Montessori School style of academics developed in the early 20 th century. Educational methods are based on scientific observation of children's learning processes. An environment in which children can freely choose from a number of developmentally appropriate activities is available.
6 Architect / Principal The Oxford High School in Oxford, Connecticut was designed by Al in the hope of achieving the town s first High School. The project was narrowly defeated in referendum in June of An Office and Retail Building Designed by Strong Design Associates for a client in Billerica, Massachusetts in A rendering by Strong Design Associates for Developer Eric Santini of SANTINI HOMES In Tolland, Connecticut in 1991.
7 Architect / Principal Redesign of the façade of the Foxwoods Casino s Two Trees Hotel in Responsibilities included coordinating the demolition of a portion of the guest rooms, selection of materials which were compatible with the existing material systems, design of a continuous exterior terrace and covered walkway connecting the main entry with the restaurant. Redesign of the façade of the Foxwoods Casino s Two Trees Hotel in Code review, meetings with local building officials, construction documentation and construction administration were also part of this projects scope of work.

Project Cost: $22.3 million. Project Architect, Hilltop Residence Hall Renovations, On-Call, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut ( ): Responsible for Building Code upgrades and assessments of deficiencies to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Building Code deficiencies are associated with gas heating and ventilation equipment located within the apartment units. Specifications Writer, Harding High School, Bridgeport, Connecticut (2004): Coordination and development of project specifications and project manual for the upgrade of Harding High School in the City of Bridgeport to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Project Cost: $445,000. Architect, Saxe Middle School, New Canaan, Connecticut (1995): Responsible for production of construction documents for the Saxe Middle School, a 26 million dollar, 120,000 square foot addition to a 100,000 square foot fully renovated public school facility. This 150,000 square foot, 36 million dollar project was narrowly defeated in referendum in June of Some of the main features for this project included a multi-level Media Center, 800-seat Gymnasium, 500-seat Auditorium and six-lane Natatorium complete with competition swimming and diving facilities. Project Cost $36 million. Architect, Longmeadow Elementary School, Middlebury, Connecticut (1995): Responsible for this new 86,000 square foot facility in Regional School District 15. Project Cost $10.2 million. Private Educational Facilities Architect / Project Manager, The Loomis Chaffee School, Windsor, Connecticut (2010): Responsible for the renovation of an existing Gymnasium facility into a 300 seat theater and classroom addition to Chaffee Hall. The scope of work also included adding an internal connection between the reception desk and the restaurant. Code review, meetings with local building officials, construction documentation and construction administration were also part of this projects scope of work. Project Cost $3 million (est.). Staff Architect / Project Manager, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation s Child Development Center, Foxwoods Casino, Ledyard, Connecticut ( ). Responsible for the design of renovations to the Child Development Center. Responsibilities included initial meetings with the Child Development staff to develop a workable program design of currently unused space within the existing facility, code review, construction documentation and construction administration. This design added three classrooms, mechanical space, toilets and circulation space to the existing facility located on tribal property. Residential Facilities Architect, Immanuel House, Hartford, Connecticut ( ): Responsible for the design of a 41 unit Assisted Living development. This building is a freestanding addition to an existing facility. Project Cost $600,000. Garages Architect / Project Manager, Lebanon Department of Public Works Garage, Lebanon, New Hampshire (2005): Responsible for design, code review, project management and preliminary cost estimation for the development of a Space Program based on the current and anticipated future needs for the City of Lebanon s Department of Public Works. Upon completion and acceptance of the developed Space Program, we designed a new 50,900-square foot complex. It incorporated a 14,600 square foot / two-story combined Maintenance and Administration Building with office space, four maintenance bays and a wash bay, an attached 27,300-square foot Storage Facility for eighteen City-owned vehicles with an integrated hoist system for elevated salt and sander storage and an attached 9,000 square foot Salt & Sand Storage and Mixing Facility.
