1 Titanic Victims and Survivors Remembered A new index of death notices and in memoriams in Southampton local newspapers by Veronica Green Southampton Central Library 2016

2 Introduction The first edition of this index concentrated on the death notices of victims and survivors of the Titanic Disaster. This new edition includes more survivors, and also the in memoriams published in Southampton papers for 100 years on the 15 April, the anniversary of the disaster. Victims In the days and weeks following the Titanic disaster, the Births, Marriages and Deaths columns of the Southampton newspapers were filled with notices of the deaths of local victims. These notices, submitted by friends and family, often contain information not readily available elsewhere, such as age and address, and the names of parents, wives, children and friends. These notices are the core of this index. Names are as published in the original source, and we have transcribed all factual details. In the interest of clarity, we have not included all the religious and loving sentiments, like quotations from the Bible and hymns, that embellished the original columns. This index was compiled by Veronica Green in the Local Studies and Maritime Library, Southampton Central Library, home to an extensive collection of Titanic-related publications. It makes use of our microfilm copies of the following newspapers: Hampshire Advertiser (weekly) Hampshire Independent (weekly) Southampton Times (weekly) Southern Daily Echo (daily) These were scanned from the date of the disaster until no further notices for Titanic victims appeared (approximately mid-june 1912). Survivors We have also included death notices for Titanic survivors as we have learnt their dates of death. For some, there was no death notice: we have included an entry with their date of death, and, if there was a report of the death in a local newspaper, we have included the date and page reference.

3 In memoriam On the first anniversary of the disaster, the Southern Daily Echo published a dedicated page of memorials to 149 of the lost, named in 139 notices. In 1914 (114), 1915 (78) 1916 (60) and 1917 (57), there continued to be columns headed "Titanic in Memoriam" on or around the anniversary. In 1918, the list was no longer separate, but the majority of those remembered on the 15 April (61) had been lost on the Titanic. Between 1919 and 1921, the figures began to fall, with a small increase on the 10 th anniversary in 1922 (35) Thereafter, the same 20 or so were religiously remembered by their surviving families, dropping to 10, 5, 2, and finally just 1 name. The last Titanic crew member to be continuously remembered from 1912 was Archie Barratt, in His father died that year: but his sister Hilda remembered him once more, in 1982, the 70 th anniversary of the disaster. Between 1944 and 1982, few others were left to remember: just Fred McCarthy in 1953 and 1954, Jack Shea in 1962, John Jackopson in 2002, Stephen William Hinton in 2009, William Alfred Jeffrey and Charles Frederick Painter in We have, again, checked all the local newspapers published on and around the 15 April from 1913 to There are a few Titanic "in memoriams" in the weekly papers: Hampshire Advertiser Hampshire Independent Southampton Times But the majority appear in the Southern Daily Echo, published in most years on the actual date of the disaster, 15 April,
