The battle took place outside Prophetstown, near present-day Battle Ground, Indiana, and was part of what is sometimes known as Tecumseh's War, which continued into the War of Although Harrison's side suffered greater casualties despite its far superior numbers, the battle was an important political and symbolic victory for the American forces. Notes for John Harden Armstrong: Local Indiana Histories - "John Armstrong, Sr., for whom the Township was named, was another of the early settlers. He had been a sailor, and came with some ready money, unlike most of the early settlers, and entered considerable land. It seemed strange that one, so much of whose life had been spent on the ocean, should at last settle in the wilds of the interior where he could not even hear the dashing of the waves upon the coast. He was a veritable "salt," full of 3 03 Nov 2008

4 stories, and never happier than when surrounded by attentive listeners. The monotonous life of the forecastle had prepared him for the monotony of pioneer life in the woods. Here he found a people glad to hear his constant talk about the sea. They had not heard his stories a thousand times, as had his shipmates no doubt. In the lonely cabins of the pioneers writh the great backlog filling every recess with its illuminating glory he was wont to become an attractive figure to all, from the boy whose life was just budding into hope, to the old man whose source of greatest joy was retrospection. Mr. Armstrong was industrious and pushing, though not particularly prominent. He was respected by all and died when about ninety years of age, in the Township bearing his name. " John Armstrong is an established patriot in the Daughters of the American Revolution. For more information, or to join the DAR go to History of Gibson Co., IN Page 61. "About the year 1809 to 1810 there was quite an influx of settlers, among whom was John Armstrong, who was descended from Irish parents and born in N. C.. His parents died when he was young, and at the age of fourteen he went to sea, where he made his home until he grew to manhood. During his sailor days he was shipwrecked three times. He quit seafaring and married Molly Swayne. Her parents emigrated at an early period from Scotland, and settled in Nantucket Island. After his marriage Mr. Armstrong returned to N. C., subsequently moved to KY., and in 1809 with his family, came to Gibson County. He afterwards moved to the north part of Vanderburg Co., where he lived until his death. He had seven children, four sons and three daughters. One of his sons, Miles Armstrong, was a noted hunter and killed a great number of bear and deer. He served as a private soldier at the battle of Tippecanoe; he was after the war made Captain of the Militia. Elsberry, another brother, was also in the Tippecanoe battle. By the marriage of Nancy, the Waters and Armstrong families were united." Page 197. "John Armstrong, a native of N. C., emigrated to KY from where to 1809 he came to the Indiana Territory and settled in this township. He had seven children. His son Miles was fond of hunting and very skillful with the rifle. Notes for Philemon Armstrong: The Town of Easton, Maryland, seems to have received its official beginning from an Act of the Assembly of the Province of Maryland dated November 4, The Act was entitled, "An Act for the Building of a Court House for Talbot County, at Armstrong's Old Field near Pitt's Bridge". Prior to this date, the Court had met at York, a small settlement located on Skipton Creek. The Court decided that this location was not convenient to all sections of the County and, in order to change the location, the above Act of the Assembly was passed. As a result of this Act, two acres of land were purchased from Philemon Armstrong, at a cost of 5,000 pounds of tobacco, the currency of the times. The tract was of the original lands of Philemon's father, Francis Armstrong, and a part of Francis' 1667 London-Derry Grant from Lord Baltimore. Upon this tract, the same plot upon which the present Talbot County Court House now stands, the Court House, a brick building 20 x 30 feet, was erected at a cost of 115,000 pounds of tobacco. The Courts of the County were held in this building from 1712 until A 6 03 Nov 2008

7 Tavern to accommodate those who attended Court was one of the first buildings erected; stores and dwellings followed. The village was then known as Talbot Court House. These were not the first buildings in the area. The frame meeting house of the Society of Friends was built between 1682 and 1684, again on land sold by Philemon. Undoubtedly some homes were built nearby. Pitt's Bridge crossed a stream forming the headwaters of the Tred Avon or Third Haven River. It was located at a point where North Washington Street crosses this stream, now enclosed in culverts, north of the Talbottown Shopping Center, and passes under the Electric Plant property. Elizabeth Price, born 01 Feb 1699/00 in Childs, Cecil, Maryland; died Unknown John Swain, born 13 Nov 1638 in East Hamptonstead, England; died 1715 in Nantucket, Nantucket, Massachusetts. He was the son of Richard Swain and Elizabeth Basselle. He married 529. Mary Weare 15 Nov 1660 in Hampton, Rockingham, New Hampshire Mary Weare, born 1636 in Nantucket, Nantucket, Massachusetts, USA; died 1714 in Nantucket, Nantucket, Massachusetts. Notes for John Swain: Transcribed from THE MILLER - MOOK FAMILY HISTORY written by Larry & Judy Miller : " John Swain was born on October 5, 1634 in East Hamptonstead, England. His parents were Richard Swayn and Elizabeth Ann Basselle. Mary Weare became his wife on November 15, 1660 in Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Mary's parents were Nathaniel Weare and Sarah (unknown). When John was just a baby his parents made the decision to immigrate to America. In April of 1635, Elizabeth Basselle Swain and three of the Swain children, Nicholas, Grace and John set sail on the ship PLANTER for America. Two older children, William and Francis, sailed aboard THE REBECCA in the care of friends. Richard himself arrive on THE TRUELOVE on September 17, One can only imagine what the conditions were like aboard these ships as they crossed the Atlantic Ocean. The privileged few had cabins which they shared with their families. Second-class passage, if even available, would afford a small cabin shared with others and steerage was a nightmare. The living conditions in steerage were crowded, dismally dark and dank and especially unsanitary. The lower portion of the ship was designated for this purpose with passengers packed tightly together, quite often with no more than a few square feet of space for each person. They basically lived in their berths and had to eat food that was spoiled and filled with insects. The rough seas would cause sea sickness making the closed quarters even worse because of the lack of ventilation. In the 1600s, passage could take from 8 to 10 weeks or longer to make the ocean crossing depending on the ship and weather. It was very common for 10% of the passengers to die during the crossing having contracted the diseases that ran rampant in the deplorable living conditions. We have no way of knowing under which class the Swains would have held accomodations but under any circumstances it would have been a very difficult passage. It can only be speculated as to the reason the Swain family chose to face the unknown in a new country by crossing the ocean in small vessels not knowing what lay ahead of them. A strong possibility would be to seek more religious freedom than what the Church of England allowed. During the period of many Puritans fled England to go to America where they established the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Then early in the history of the Colony religious persecution began again. The Puritans or Separatists found conditions worse than what they had left and many of them joined the "Society of Friends" or Quakers - John among them. Over a period of time the Quakers were persecuted and were banished from the Colony. In late 1658 and early 1659, John Swain, along with his father, Richard, and others began looking for a new area 8 03 Nov 2008

9 to better their circumstances. Tristram Coffin, one of the disillusioned colonists, made a trip to some of the islands offshore and met Thomas Mayhew. Mayhew had been deeded Nantucket Island sometime after 1641 by the authorities in control of all land between Cape Cod and the Hudson river. Thomas Mayhew, who was a merchant in Watertown and Martha's Vineyard, used the island mostly for grazing sheep. There was a tribe of Indians on the island called the Wampanoag Indians. Mayhew set out to "Christianize" them and the tribe became known as "the praying Indians." During the summer of 1659, John Swain, his father, Richard, Tristram Coffin, Thomas Macy, Christopher Hussey, Thomas Barnard, Peter Coffin, Stephen Greenleaf and William Pike joined together to purchase the Island of Nantucket from Thomas Mayhew. Mayhew's price - "30 pounds and 2 Beaver hats...1 for myself and 1 for my wife." (Source: Nantucket Island History - Nantucket Chamber of Commerce). Thomas Mayhew kept a small portion of the island for himself. The Wampanoag Indian tribe was friendly to the settlers and helped them get through the first years of trying to establish a settlement. Not all of the original purchasers of the Island made their home there. John Swain, his father, Richard, and their families moved to Nantucket about It would be many years before there were sufficient numbers to form a community. In 1700, only 300 whites and 800 Indians occupied Nantucket Island. At one time there had been about 3,000 Wampanoag on the Island. Over the years the Indians had contracted some of the diseases introduced by the whites when they first began to inhabit Nantucket. Mary Weare Swain died in 1714 and John Swain died the following year in " Children of John Swain and Mary Weare are: i.
