The University Mace Maces were originally medieval weapons carried by bodyguards to kings and sergeants-atarms. Much later, the mace became of ceremonial rather than practical significance and organisations such as civic corporations and universities adopted the mace as a symbol of the rule of legal authority. The University s mace is displayed at meetings of the University Council and on such ceremonial occasions as conferring ceremonies. The bearer of the mace, in academic processions, guards the Chancellor. Deakin s mace was presented to the University by Mr Donald Thomson, Sir Wilfred Brookes and Mr Norman Stephen (Alcoa Australia). Graduation Ceremonies October

Academic Dress Academic dress is an important reminder of the long history of universities in western civilisation. The three main elements of academic dress are the gown, the hood and the head-dress, which were all once articles of everyday outer dress. Both gowns and hoods, when in common use, were often lined and this lining was decorative, as well as practical. In medieval times, the higher the rank of the wearer, the more sumptuous the gown. In universities there is still a difference in the apparel of scholars of various ranks reflecting the origins of the academic dress. Today s academic head-dress evolved from various hats and bonnets of earlier times. Deakin University s academic dress, like that of most Australian universities, derives from dress worn at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. 22 The Campuses Deakin is a large university with all the accompanying resources and infrastructure, but its campuses are small enough to retain their own character and sense of community. Each of our campuses offers a unique atmosphere from the inspiring architecture and bayside appeal of our Geelong Waterfront Campus, to the cafe culture of our Melbourne Burwood Campus, the spectacular coastal location at our Warrnambool Campus or the mix of activity and open space at our Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. Melbourne Burwood Campus This thriving campus is Deakin s largest. Located 15km from the Melbourne CBD, it boasts open and inviting spaces for socialising and studying, innovative architecture and wireless locations. An ambitious building program has resulted in a new complex of spacious modern buildings, including the gateway building situated on Burwood Highway. 44 Tuesday 3 October 6 pm Mr Dan Monheit The Occasional Address will be delivered by Mr Dan Monheit, Director of Strategy and Owner at Hardhat Digital. My first job was at McDonalds. I worked there for four years while I was at high school, and boy did I love that job. It was my first interaction with the workforce, and I took in everything I could, skilling up across kitchen, front counter, drive through, crew training and even kids birthday parties. In a funny way, McDonalds also ruined me. Learning the correct way to apply cheese to a Quarter Pounder, the correct way to fill a cup with ice and the correct way to mop a kitchen floor left me with the impression that every business had a well-articulated, objectively sound process for doing everything. That was how I thought the real world worked. Four years later I graduated from Monash University and without a day of creative agency experience, decided to start a creative agency Hardhat - with my best mate (and fellow McDonalds alum), Justin Kabbani. It was only a matter of weeks before we realised that the real world was nothing like working at McDonalds at all. Of course, neither of us knew anything about running a business. But as it turned out, nobody else seemed to know anything either. If everyone else was making it up, we concluded, then so could we. And so began our quest to create the exact type of agency that we wanted to turn up at, every single day. We must have learned a few things since then, because 12 years later we re a team of 40 across Melbourne and Sydney. Our offices include an indoor basketball court, a whisky bar and a couple of adorable dogs. We ve picked up a swag of local and international awards, and had the pleasure of working with some incredible brands including Little Creatures, NAB and Deakin University. I m constantly learning. Books. Podcasts. Short courses. Talking to strangers. My role as a strategist is to join dots that other people haven t thought to connect. The broader my perspective, the more dots I have in my field of vision, the more likely I am to find a match. We ve built Hardhat up to a size and scale where we re truly working on problems worth solving, helping large scale organisations navigate a world and an audience that s changing before their eyes. We ve learned to be OK with what we don t know. In fact, we ve learned to embrace it. In today s world, few of us ever get the luxury of getting past novice status, before having to move on to the next thing. If I m really honest, the only thing we ve ever been truly great at over the years is change. I ve had plenty of fun along the way too. I ve been lucky enough to travel the world, including a semester abroad at the University of Miami. I ve played basketball for Australia at the Maccabiah Games. I ve competed as a long course triathlete, a swing dancer, a break dancer, and a battle MC (still undefeated). I married the love of my life and have two beautiful children. And I get to turn up to an agency that I love to be at, every single day. 42 Deakin University

Doctoral Degrees Doctor of Philsophy PhD Asma A Nasser Ahmad Establishing Trust Relationships and Secure Channels in Opportunistic Networks. An effective system with techniques and algorithms that preserve the completeness and integrity of packets in a network and protects Opportunistic Networks from packet dropping and modification attacks has been proposed in this thesis. The techniques and attributes used to create the system involve using Merkle trees, trust, and reputation. Associate Professor Robin Ram Mohan Doss Information Technology Jacqueline Helga Allen Improving Older People s Experience in Transitional Care: Co Design of TRANSITION. A care integration tool TRANSITION was developed to support older people and their families living with chronic illness to transition from hospital to home. Professor Trish Livingston Nursing and Midwifery Shivapratap Gopakumar Machine Learning in Healthcare: An Investigation into Model Stability. Current machine learning algorithms, when directly applied to medical data, often fail to provide a good understanding of prognosis. This study provides three pathways to make predictive models stable and usable for healthcare. When tested on heart failure and diabetes patients from a local hospital, this study demonstrated 20% improvement over existing methods. Dr Truyen Tran Information Technology Marwa Hassan Aly Hassan Quantifying Heteroskedasticity Metrics. This study proposes a quantification measure for heteroskedasticity in the time series. Two methods are introduced for quantifying heteroskedasticity: Slope of Local Variance Index (SoLVI) and a statistical divergence method using Bhattacharys coefficient. Both measures show reliability in measuring and quantifying heteroskedasticity in comparison to numerical and hypothesis heteroskedasticity tests. Associate Professor Douglas Creighton Institute: Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation Wednesday 4 October 12 pm Graduation Ceremonies October

Wednesday 4 October 12 pm Huu Viet Huynh Towards Scalable Bayesian Nonparametric Methods for Data Analytics. Resorting big data to actionable information involves dealing with four dimensions of challenges in big data (called four V s): volume, variety, velocity, veracity. In this study, we seek for novel Bayesian nonparametric models and scalable learning algorithms which can deal with these challenges of the big data era. Professor Dinh Phung School of Information Technology Jiaojiao Jiang Rumor Source Identification in Complex Networks. This thesis conducts an in depth study on rumor spreading process through a complex network, with the objective to identify the source(s) of the rumor. This work is of fundamental importance for a secure network. Dr Shui Yu School of Information Technology Erin Marie Landells Perceptions of Organizational Politics: The Positives and Negatives. The program of qualitative and quantitative research focused on understanding how employees perceive organizational politics. The key contributions of the research include clearly defined and measurable dimensions of both positive and negative politics, and an understanding of the psychological mechanisms that explain the effects of organizational politics on employee stress and engagement. Dr Simon Albrecht Psychology Christopher Latella Acute Neurophysiological Responses to Resistance Training: An Investigation into Super Compensation Theory. Resistance training causes an acute increase in corticospinal excitability in an attempt to attenuate peripheral fatigue, providing evidence that central mechanisms do not limit performance. The results also show a shortened time course of neurophysiological fatigue and recovery than previously suggested by super compensation theory. 63 Yu Qing Low The Associations between Sweet Taste Function, Oral Complex Carbohydrate Sensitivity, Dietary Intake Patterns and Body Composition. The studies conducted as part of this thesis contribute to the growing knowledge surrounding sweet taste function and potential existence of complex carbohydrate taste in humans. The findings supports the existence and functionality of complex carbohydrate sensitivity and ad libitum consumption of complex carbohydrate foods, dietary intake and body composition. Professor Russell Keast Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Hayden Melton Empirical Studies of Structural Phenomena using a Curated Corpus of Java Code. Contrary to 50 years worth of advice in the instructional literature on software design, long cyclic dependencies are found to be widespread in sizeable, curated corpus of real Java software. Among their causes may be overuse of static members, underuse of dependency injection and poor tool support for avoiding them. Professor John Grundy Information Technology Eliza Grace Miller Exercise, Protein and Vitamin D for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. This research investigated if lifestyle strategies including caloric restriction or nutritional supplementation with protein and vitamin D, combined with exercise, could provide an additive effect on glycaemic control, insulin sensitivity, body composition and cardiovascular related risk factors compared to exercise alone in older overweight/obese adults with type 2 diabetes. Professor Robin Daly Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Lisa Jane Moody The Prevalence and Impact of Hearing Impairment in Acute Care. The thesis reports the prevalence and impact of Hearing Impairment on hospitalised adults. Prevalence and severity of hearing impairment were significantly higher than previously reported levels for age matched adults in the Australian population. The results highlighted systemic quality and safety risks for people with hearing impairment in acute care. Professor Trisha Dunning Nursing and Midwifery Wednesday 4 October 12 pm Graduation Ceremonies October

Wednesday 4 October 12 pm Ashleigh Therese Moreland Improving Neural Function in Older Adults Through Targeted Exercise. This thesis explored age related differences in neurophysiological function, and identified and compared the efficacy and time course of adaptations following externally paced strength training, balance and visuomotor training. Older adults were shown to have functional deficits compared to young adults, but the interventions induced neuroplasticity and resulted in improved functional outcomes. Professor Robin Daly Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Siobhan Anne O Halloran Dietary Sources and Assessment of Sodium and Potassium Intakes in Australian Preschool Aged Children. This research showed that Australian preschool children are consuming high amounts of sodium which exceeded recommendations, driven by the consumption of processed foods. In addition, preschool children consumed low amounts of vegetables leading to potassium intakes which were below recommendations and a molar Na:K ratio above the WHO recommendation. Professor Caryl Nowson Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Kinga Pemo Exploration of Breastfeeding Promotion and Practices in Bhutan. Lack of breastfeeding information and support from health professionals during pregnancy and following birth led to Bhutanese women having limited understanding of the true meaning of exclusive breastfeeding. Furthermore, they adopted cultural and traditional practices in the belief that such practices would not impede the exclusivity of breastfeeding. All the health professionals reported staff shortages and heavy workloads, in particular, midwives, reported a lack of ongoing professional development as factors that prevented them from providing breastfeeding information and support. Asssociate Professor Diane Phillips School of Nursing and Midwifery Sirinya Phulkerd Analysis of Policy Implementation for Healthier Food Environments in Thailand. This study provided better understanding of the extent of implementation of the Thai Government s food environment policies, and barriers and facilitators to implementation. It found that implementing best practice policies is necessary, but availability and adequacy of infrastructure to support their implementation is crucial. It provided recommendations for enhancing the government implementation. Professor Mark Lawrence Exercise and Nutrition Sciences 62 Deakin University

Doctor of Psychology (Clinical) DPsych(Clin) David Hilton Demmer Exploring Gender Differences in the Prevalence of Childhood Externalising Disorders. Results demonstrated that externalising disorders are more prevalent in boys than girls, except for Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Non Western countries, where no gender difference was found. Results also found that parenting and diagnosis did not impact this gender imbalance, however there appears a potential for ADHD to be misdiagnosed in both genders. Dr Merrilyn Hooley Psychology Laura Marie Di Manno Variation in Depression Outcomes among Young People from Dissolved Families. This thesis adds to literature examining individual differences that account for diversity in depressive outcomes following parental divorce. Longitudinal data were used to assess, of those who experience parental divorce, who is most at risk for depressive outcomes and when such knowledge may inform appropriately targeted prevention and intervention strategies Dr Jacqui Macdonald Psychology Leigh Davis Elliott Improving Social and Behavioural Functioning in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: a Videogame Skills Based Feasibility Trial. This thesis assessed the feasibility of using specifically designed video games to improve functioning in children with autism spectrum disorder. The findings provide preliminary evidence supporting the use of Whiz Kid Games (a freely accessible, online, video game based intervention) for improving both social and behavioural functioning in children aged 6 12 who have been diagnosed with autism. Associate Professor David Austin Psychology Doctor of Psychology (Health) DPsych(Health) Lauren Jade Bruce Intuitive Eating in Relation to Other Eating Patterns and Psychosocial Correlates. This thesis examines the comparison between aspects of intuitive eating and disordered eating, and the psychosocial factors that are associated with women s engagement in these eating patterns, demonstrated that some aspects of intuitive eating overlap with disordered eating. Findings have potential implications for interventions designed to prevent and/ or reduce disordered eating. 119 Professor Christine Ure Professor Christine Ure commenced her career at Deakin in 2012 as Head of the School of Education. In the 2017 Quacquarelli Symonds discipline rankings Education was ranked 28 in the world (up from 31 in the 2016 ranking) and remains ranked at 5th in Australia. Professor Ure is a leader in the national debate around teacher education reform and led the Victorian debate in her capacity as President of the Victorian Council of Deans of Education. One of the major reforms in teacher education led by Professor Ure is Deakin s Teach for Australia Initiative which is a partnership with Teach for Australia and the Commonwealth Government for the delivery of Deakin s Master of Teaching to approximately 450 schools across Australia, including many regional and remote schools. This has set a new standard and approach to sustainable and partnership based teacher education for Australia. Under Professor Ure s leadership, the School of Education plans to extend the model over the next few years so that this operating approach to professional experience and industry partnership will replace the more traditional practicum model for around 5,000 preservice teachings each year. She is also a member of the Victorian Government Teacher Supply and Demand Reference Group and the Minister s Expert Panel for Schools. She also has oversight of the Skilling the Bay Project, Successful Students STEM Program, designed to build teaching capability in secondary schools and encourage student awareness and future employment opportunities in STEM related industries. She was also a named investigator of a major research consultancy involving the professional development of senior educational managers in Vietnam valued at over AU$220,000 during Professor Ure contributes expertise in research and development in the areas of learning and teaching and curriculum and has extensive experience in the management of teacher education projects in Australia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, India and Vietnam. Her most recent research and development activities have focused on how learning goals and the design of services and programs meet the educational needs of users and systems. Professor Ure has made a significant contribution to the teacher education reform agenda in Australia and has defined a most useful role for Deakin in that reform. She has further developed the national and international reputation of the School of Education and is viewed as one of the Australia s experts in Initial Teacher Education.
