6 Museum of Applied Art An der Rechtschule D Cologne t/ The Museum für Angewandte Kunst (in short MAK) shows 20th century design in a great post-wwii building, designed in 1957 by Cologne architect Rudolf Schwarz Originally this building was designed for the the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum and later housed Museum Ludwig The design department gives visitors the opportunity to study design in its close relationship with works of fine art Under the title 'Art + Design in Dialogue' the new permanent design exhibition highlights the complex interplay between design and art and contextualize it within it's political social and artistic framework 20th century design by pioneering designers, juxtaposed with outstanding works of fine art The building was sensitively renovated by the Cologne architect Walter Lom in Main designer, Rudolf Schwarz Walter von Lom Naomi Tuesday to Sunday 11 am - 5 pm Public tours: Saturdays, Sundays 230 pm, wednesdays 11 am Tel: +49/221/ and Library: Tuesday to Friday 11 am -5 pm Tel / /23394 mfak@stadt-koelnde The Museum has a great lunch room and open air inner courtyard! 9 Museum Ludwig Heinrich-Böll-Platz Cologne The Museum Ludwig is devoted to modern art from the beginning of the 20th century The highlight of the museum is the collection of Pop Art built up by Peter and Irene Ludwig - the largest outside the USA In addition, the Ludwigs have bequeathed a considerable collection on the Russian avantgarde from the period from 1906 to 1930 and a collection of several hundred works by Pablo Picasso The overall form of the building is a rhythmic east-west saw-tooth roofscape It is divided into two halves in order to create views and direct access from the Cathedral to the Rhine, involving five different streets and squares around the museum The spatial hierarchy continues inside At the centre of the cross formed by the outdoor streets and squares is the foyer, from where the staircase leads to the different levels and exhibition areas The saw-tooth roof allows an explicit northward orientation, giving evenly distributed natural north light, augmented as necessary by artificial light 1986 Busmann + Haberer City of Cologne Naomi Tuesday - Sunday: h Every first Thursday of the month: h Monday closed , info@museum-ludwigde On walking distance from the central train station 9
