It is an effort to compile family anecdotal stories, census records, wills, obituaries, deeds and just about any piece of information available. She married JOHN ELVA SHOCKLEY January 09, 1916, son of JOHN SHOCKLEY and SARAH EVANS. He was born January 09, 1895 in Maryland, and died June 25, Notes for ELSIE MAE TIMMONS: Born near Dagsboro, Delaware. Upon her mother's death, she had to quit grade school (around the 4th grade) in order to maintain the household for her father. Her grandfather Sockrider was a trader who married an Indian "princess" Beula Heart of the Nanacoke tribe. Grandfather Sockrider lived with his son Frank in his later years. John Elva worked for Wilson Line in Wilmington from 1915 until he was laid off during the depression probably around He was working for Wilson when he married Elsie Mae. Although he stayed in Wilmington due to his job, Elsie lived on the farm they owned in St. Martins Neck on the bay. Their silo is still standing near where the barn used to be and can be seen from the road which goes from the Route 90 bypass to Bishopville. Maryland. John would come home every 2-3 weeks (less frequently in the winter) to be with his wife and family. Elsie didn't like being alone on the farm and so far away from everyone. She would have to hitch a wagon in order to visit her in-laws who lived on their farm in Bishopville. Additionally, the winters on the bay were cold and damp. John and Eslie eventually moved their home in Bishopville sometime around A few years later they moved the house a short distance to its present location. John and his father lived close enough that they shared a power plant which they installed. Sometime around 1932/34 John was hired by Dupont as a tugboat captain. He also worked on a freight boat between Wilmington ant Philadelphia. He was known as Captain John of the Wilmington docks. It is said he knew the waters of the Delaware like the back of his hand. At times he also sold fish, clams, etc. He enjoyed hunting and raised rabbit dogs. He was working at DuPont when he had his first stroke in 1938 and stopped working for them shortly thereafter.
