2 Introduction... We follow the story of one of Paris s most historic and prestigious residences, 10 Avenue d Iena, in a documentary linking the building with historical and cultural events since its completion in 1896 and current major renovation by Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts. Built during the fin de siècle for Prince Roland Bonaparte, the residence has seen so much of Paris s great turning points, from the founding of National Geographic to the inception of aviation, two world wars, the great Paris 1910 flood, major art movements and shifting fashions in the worlds most stylish city. The story will be told through the diverse history of the building and its involvement within Parisian culture throughout the years. Focusing on details of the current restoration by Shangri-La Hotels Resorts and illustrating the links between past and present.
3 Visual Story
4 Snapshot... A snapshot of Paris during the fin de siècle reveals Maxim s as the in-spot; Fauchon was selling his epicurean goodies all over Europe; Caron perfumery was still re-creating Marie Antoinette s favourite perfume for ladies in the know; Picasso was embracing the social niceties of the Paris elite while still trying to hang onto his bohemian ways and Art Nouveau was the design style that marked the era. On the banks of seine the great exhibition was about to launch, the Eiffel Tower was nearly complete and grand residence was under construction. Roland Bonaparte s address at 10 Avenue d Iena in the fashionable 16th arrondissement was in the midst of high society and he mingled with many of the luminaries of the era. A larger than life character he was forced to relinquish a distinguished career as a lieutenant in the 36th Infantry Regiment ( the French passed a law banning family members of former French rulers from serving in the army) in favour of becoming a scientific explorer. He remained President of the Societe de Geographie ( the forerunner to National Geographic) from 1907 until his death An invitation to a dinner or gathering at Avenue d Iena was opportunity to follow the travels of Prince Roland into exotic lands for encounters with the Lapps north of Finland, the Sami s of northern Norway, the Native American people and cultures and the tribes of Surinam. One of the best archives of the photos from his adventures exists at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. When Bonaparte died in 1924 he had left behind a giant herbarium built in his residence which housed 2.5 million scientific samples most of which are now archived at The Claude Bernard University in Lyon after firstly being rejected by the Natural History Museum in Paris because they had no room to house it. Other parts of his collection, books and photographs are at The Smithsonian, Standford, Princeton and The New York Botanical Gardens Library. Prince Roland s death also signalled the end of the bloodline of the Bonaparte name. His daughter Marie ( by Roland s marriage to Marie Blanc, the daughter of Monte Carlo s real estate developer) married Prince George of Greece and was a confidant of Sigmund Freud and because of her wealth she was also able to pay his ransom to the Nazi s during the war. Princess Marie s son Peter followed in his grandfather s footsteps as an anthropologist specialising in Himalayan customs His great-great grand-daughter Princess Constanza della Torre e Tasso was a debutante into Parisian society at Le Bal at Le Crillon Hotel in 2007.
