1 Descendants of John Ryle Jr Generation 1 1. JOHN 1 RYLE was born on 10 Oct 1767 in Anson Co No Carolina. He died on 14 Oct 1834 in Boone Co Kentucky. He married SARAH (SALLIE) HOGAN about 1791 in Anson Co No Carolina, daughter of James Hogan and Silence Lane. She was born on 14 Jan 1769 in Anson Co No Carolina. She died on 13 Nov 1848 in Boone Co Kentucky. Notes for John Ryle: John Ryle left son John a male slave named Harry. Note: Herbert Ryle's note in his book shows John Jr's death date as March John Jr's will is dated & signed on August and entered in court in the December, 1834 term. Does anyone have John Jr's correct death date? John Ryle Jr's wife, Sarah, was Elizabeth Hogan Ryle's sister. Oral history tells that John Jr came from NC on horseback. Sarah rode with a child in front her; one in back & she was pregnant with a third; probably They settled in Rabbit Hash, Boone Co Ky, near Benjamin Stephens. Courts P Kendall, one of Jr's descendants, living in Florida in 1936, wrote Herbert's father that Bible records in his family show a James Cooper Ryle, son of John & Sarah, born October (The year cannot be right, as John died in 1834 & Sarah in 1848). Herbert's father told of "Uncle Jimmy Cooper" being in the early family. Was Jimmy an "adopted" child or had Sarah been married before & Jimmy was her son? This could be another John Ryle's child... John Jr & family lived for a time with Hogans in Bellevue, then moved to Rabbit Hash where they bought a farm near Benjamin Stephens. Jr was a farmer whose sons spent a lot of time on the river; at one time running the Rabbit Hash-Rising Sun Ferry. All the sons died young. Above information came from many sources. The John Ryle Jr bible has not been found. It may have been taken to Tennessee where William, the oldest surviving son, was purported to be living in 1848 when his mother died. John Jr's will has been posted on Kentucky: Slaves in Wills/Deeds Note also that in his will, John Jr's daughter, Nancy Craig, is not incompetent; John Jr did not like her husband, Reverend Francis Craig. Notes for Nancy Ryle: To daughter Nancy Craig, John Ryle Jr gave $300 to be left in the hands of his executors/administrators or some other persons properly authorized to manage same, together with all other money or property that may fall to her from his estate. Which money and property John wished managed to the best advantage for the interest of said daughter and the proceeds paid regularly to her, but do not wish the money or property at any time placed at her disposal. Nevertheless, should it at any time appear to those who have the management of said money or property absolutely necessary for her suppport, in that case sufficient may be drawn from the principal to supply any such deficiency and no more and at the death of said daughter, all the remaining money or property, the proceeds of my estate, John wished to be equally divided among the legal heirs of her body. 3 Generation 2 (con't) Information regarding this family is from Mamie Rogers Williamson and E S Ryle Nancy's father, John Ryle Jr, was opposed to this marriage, although Nancy was 22 years old. In John Jr's will he makes it plain that her husband is not to receive any benefit from his estate. The couple may have lived a while in Tennessee, where her sister, Sarah Ann Kendall & her brother, William Ryle, later lived. Francis' and Nancy's children also lived in Boone Co Ky. Notes for John Ryle III: John III's first wife, Patsy, was his first cousin (dau of Elijah Hogan). He was a farmer who also flatboated. He died at an early age of a fever contracted while on a trip downriver. Patsy may have died in childbirth, late 1822, as John married her sister, Betsy, also his first cousin, right away. Patsy had left 3 very young children, so he would have needed help. Betsy must have died before 1834 as John Ryle Jr doesn't mention her in his will but does leave bequests to John III's surviving children. In January 1836 Boone Co Court records show that Marius, Caroline & Whitmell were orphans of John III. He died in 1823 in Boone Co Kentucky. 13. ii. WHITMELL RYLE was born on 05 Jun 1824 in Boone Co Kentucky. He died on 09 Jun 1907 in One mile nw of Yates, Randolph Co, Missouri. He married ELIZABETH FRANCES TERRILL on 26 Apr 1857 in Boone Co Kentucky, daughter of Jesse Terrill and Abigail H Walton. She was born on 17 Jun 1837 in Missouri. She died in 1892 in Yates, Randolph Co, Missouri.

He died on 23 Feb 1871 in Paris, Henry Co Tennessee. Notes for Sarah Ann Ryle: Sarah Ann's husband, Devereaux, was her first cousin -- their mothers were sisters. As far as is known, the Kendalls never lived in Boone Co, but went directly from Boone Co to Henry Co Tennessee. Some of their descendants later lived in Texas & Mississippi. Two sons served in the Confederate Army. This information from E S Ryle & Mrs Henry Hodges, Dallas Texas. John Ryle Jr bequeathed to his daughter a slave named Lucy - value, $300. Notes for Devereaux Jarrett Kendall: Devereaux and Sarah are first cousins through his mother, Nancy Hogan Kendall, and Sarah's mother, Sarah Hogan Ryle, who are sisters. As far as is known, the Kendalls never lived in Boone Co Ky, but went directly from (probably Anson Co) North Carolina to Tennessee. Some of their descendants lived in Mississippi and Texas. Also, Devereaux was called by his middle name, Jarrett. Information from E S Ryle and Mrs Henry Hodges, Dallas Texas Per Maymie Rogers Williamson: in Record Book N, pg 71, Sept , Devereaux J Kendall and Sarah, his wife, of Henry County and the state of Tennessee, deed to Richard Lee of Boone County Kentucky, a certain tract of land in Boone County, it being part of a tract formerly belonging to John Ryle, deceased. Devereaux Jarrett Kendall and Sarah Ann Ryle had the following children: i. MARGARET ANN 3 KENDALL was born on 09 Dec She died between in Henry Co Tenn. ii. Notes for Polly Ryle: The information about Polly Ryle Willis came from her great grandson, Winslow R Willis, El Paso Tx, who renewed contact with the family in John Ryle Jr left a slave named Alley to his daughter Polly Willis -- value, $300. Notes for Lewis Willis: The family left Boone Co Ky in 1835 and moved to Oldham Co Ky, where they were living at the time of the 1840 census. ELIZABETH 2 RYLE (John 1 ) was born on 06 Aug 1808 in Boone Co Kentucky. She died on 08 Jan She married JOHN W PEARSON on 15 Mar 1838 in Boone Co Kentucky. He was born in 1815 in Garrard Co Kentucky. He died between in Rising Sun, Ohio Co Indiana. Notes for Elizabeth Ryle: John W Ryle Jr left a slave named Zilphy to daughter Elizabeth; also a mare 2 yrs old and a good bed and furniture. Notes for John W Pearson: Herbert Ryle notes that he was privileged to read a letter from Louisiana Ryle, daughter of Sandy Ryle and Elizabeth's niece, to the Kendall family in Tennessee in which a reference was made to the Pearson family. The letter was written shortly before the Civil War. John was merchant in Rising Sun, Indiana. The names of the children were discovered in the 1850 Indiana census. John W Pearson and Elizabeth Ryle had the following children: i. JULIUS 3 PEARSON was born in 1841 in Boone Co Kentucky. ii. JOHN W PEARSON was born in 1844 in Boone Co Kentucky. JOSEPH B PEARSON was born in 1846 in Boone Co Kentucky. 8. SANDY 2 RYLE (John 1 ) was born on 03 Aug 1811 in Boone Co Kentucky. He died on 10 Feb 1855 in Per death record, Mississippi; actual date may be Feb He married MARY ANN STEPHENS on 15 Mar 1838 in Boone Co Kentucky, daughter of Benjamin Stephens and Agnes Nelson. She was born on 05 Jan 1821 in Boone Co Kentucky. She died on 06 Nov 1871 in Boone Co Kentucky. Notes for Sandy Ryle: John Ryle Jr left son Sandy $300 together with one good bed and furniture. Sandy died while on a trip downriver in Missouri. He was buried where he died, which is unknown, but his father-in-law, Benjamin Stephens Jr went to Missouri to bring back his body. Benjamin also became sick & died. After a period of several months, the bodies of both men were brought back to Boone Co for burial. Sandy was a farmer near Rabbit Hash, but like his older brothers, spent time on the river also. At one time he helped operate the ferry. His widow outlived him 16 years & never remarried. Their 5 children grew up with the large family of David & Minerva Ryle.
