I. Goddard, Jr., and an engraved Revere silver bowl from the testimonial committee. Describing the contribution that the SBA has made to the state, Governor Chafee quipped, "This man has really got it. He was appointed by Eisenhower and promoted by Johnson." Eugene P. Tony and his family are now residing at 9802 De Paul Drive, Bethesda, Maryland HOMECOMING MAY 6 AND 7 ROY D. WELCH TO HEAD DEVELOPMENT OFFICE The appointment of Roy D. Welch, Jr. to head a newly created Development Office was announced recently by President Jacobs. In making the appointment, President Jacobs noted that Bryant has reached a stage where alumni are being asked to take a greater share in planning the direction of the College's growth and supporting its progress. "Alumni, more than any other group," he said, "are the key to strengthening our educational programs. The more they take an interest in the College, support her financially, and serve as goodwill ambassadors, the more we excel. "Bryant College must obtain increased financial support if she is to continue advancing in her field. Our goal is to excel in educating young men and women for business leadership and meet our obligations to future alumni in light of the accelerating demands of business," he continued. "The Alumni Annual Giving Program brings Bryant unrestricted gifts. It is impossible for us to grow without this support, for tuition and fees simply do not pay for the cost of education today. Weare pleased that so many alumni contributed to the College last year, reflecting a growing awareness of the important role we serve in higher education." The Development Office will be responsible for interpreting the College's educational programs to alumni, corporations and foundations, and mapping opportunities for the financial support of present and future programs. Mr. Welch received his B.S. and M.A. degrees from Northwestern University and has pursued graduate study in business administration at the University of Chicago. He was formerly assistant to the president of Rand McNally and Company and recently held the development post at Rhode Island School of Design. GILMAN TO HEAD 1966 ALUMNI FUND HECTOR A. GILMAN The 1966 Alumni Annual Giving Fund will be headed up by Hector A. Gilman '21, vice president in charge of the Industrial National Bank's West Shore area offices. 2 ViCE PRESIDENT RUSSELL ADDRESSES ROTARIANS The following l'ematks by Dr. Charles H. Russell, vice president fo?' academic affairs, wel'e pal t of a talk, "Businessmen and Colleges of Business," given befo?'e the Rotary Club of Providence. It was included in the July 21 issue of The Wall Street Jou1'lwl in its "Notable and Quotable" column. Businessmen are so completely immersed in making decisions every day that they take the whole process for granted. They do not think of it as an intellectual power. They decide daily whether to buy or sell, what to manufacture and how much, where the most profitable market is, whom to hire, whom to fire, how much of this, how much of that. Making a sound decision is a complex and difficult art.... The intellectual processes involved are similar to those in mathematics or science, where care and orderliness or a step by step buildup of reasoning are essential to success. The level of difficulty of business decision-making explains why we are de- veloping today the scientific management and marketing movements.... Decisionmaking is the very breath of life for a businessman - it is the excitement and romance of business... It appears to me we need to do one thing more than any other, which is to convey to young people the excitement of business as a career and, along with it, the challenge of the private enterprise system to individual talent. In my opinion, we have failed in this task.... For over 30 years, since the beginning of the depression, business has taken a beating. It used to be that the story of rags to riches, the log hut to financial wealth was the great American dreamand the entrepreneur was viewed as a man who accomplished great things. But 30 years of debunking, a constant harping in media of entertainment... have had their toll. Business today to a great many hardly seems more than a humdrum life of petty self-seeking, narrow self-interest, and chicanery for which one must continually feel vaguely apologetic. Businessmen know this is false but we have failed to justify our role of leadership, and into the vacuum have plunged the critics... It is time for those in business to recognize the worth of business activity and the special training it requires. Business is the only calling requiring great competence comparable to that in the major professions of law, medicine, and religion where those in practice have been too little involved with the colleges. It is time, therefore, for the business colleges and businessmen to go forward together and to convey to our young people the truth that life in business is the highest order of merit and human accomplishment. DE FUSCOS HEAD REUNION COMMITTEE NAMED FIRST WOMAN 01 RECTOR FOR R. I. R. A. I. The Rhode Island Retail Association, Inc. has elected Anne N. Blaszkow '36 as one of its directors. The owner of Anya's Dress Shop, which she established in 1946 in Woonsocket, Anne was one of the charter members of the Association when it was formed in She is a member of the board of directors of the Woonsocket YMCA, a charler member of the Woonsocket branch of the Professional and Business Women's Club, and second vice president of the Bryant College Alumni Council. The Rhode Island Retail Association, Inc. has reached a membership of 675 retail stores. It has been the catalyst to establish group life insurance, Blue Shield and Physicians Service plans, and a group major medical plan for its members. As a legislative influence, the Association has worked for repeal of the federal retail excise tax and has supported Fair Trade laws. Page Two HOMECOMING '66 WILL FEATURE MOONLIGHT SAIL Alumni returning for the 1966 Homecoming will take to the water on Friday evening, May 6, for a cruise on Narragansett Bay.
