3 INVENTORY FORM CONTINUATION SHEET Massachusetts Historical Commission 220 Morrissey Blvd. Boston, Massachusetts Community Kingston Property Address P79 Grove Street Area(s) Form No. 379 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: The residence at 279 Grove Street was built c.1870 in the Italianate style. This 5x3 bay, wood frame, 2 story building sits on a granite block foundation. The building has been clad with vinyl siding. The multi-gable roof is covered with asphalt shingles. A brick chimney pierces the roof at the ridge. The center entrance contains a pair of wood doors with rectangular glass panel in the upper section and raised panels below. The windows contain 2.2 sash, The cornice is boxed with returns. A one story, side gable ell is on the east elevation of the building. A one story, shed roof porch runs across the facade of the main building and the side ell. It is supported by open posts with decorative brackets. A large 2 story, front gable barn with a ventilator sits toward the rear of the property. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE: This was the residence of Horace Maglathlin, built c According to Melville p.328, Horace had a tack factory near Silver Lake in The factory was located across the street from 35 and 53 Lake Street (INV# 384 & 385). This building is individually eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C as an excellent example of an Italianate style cottage. The application of vinyl siding, in this case, has not diminished the architectural integrity of this property. The large barn to the rear of the property is also a valuable example of agricultural architecture and one of a very few 19th century barns extant in Kingston.
