The mind of the environment, Juhani Pallasmaa 2001 The course seeks to expand the perspective on architecture as an expression of both conscious and subconscious processes. In his essay The Mind of the Environment, Pallasmaa s radical statement is that it is not the consciously intended aspects of planning, but the unconscious, existential content of the work that gives it quality and vitality independent of time. If this is the case, how can this be reflected in an educational context? Research on the works of first year architect students seem to supports Pallasmaa s statement. Interesting patterns emerge in these works that is not a product of conscious effort and raise basic questions concerning our perspective on architectural education. During the course we want to dig deeper into this matter. This will involve methodical aspects, theoretical aspects and creative aspects. How is it possible to work consciously with subconscious matters? Isn t this a contradiction? What kind of basic theories about the unconscious is relevant for creative work? What methods can be used to discover and discuss deep-structures in architecture? The course is meant to give the students a general understanding of deeper aspects of architectural expressions and at the same time discuss the personal and individual part of the role of the architect. The pedagogical structure of the course will be built around workshops, seminars, studio work, theoretical studies and case-studies. Different kinds of art expressions will be important as a point of departure for discussions and studio work. The course will be closely linked to AAR Environmental Aesthetics and Place Studies. It will also be a part of a developing research work concerning the potential of unconscious processes in architectural design. The Integral Approach will work as a basis, both as a pedagogical tool and as a structuring backdrop for the architectural discussions. The language used in the course will be English.
