1 1 Descendants of William Hogan and Elizabeth Hogan 1. William 1 Hogan, born abt 1761 in Ireland; died 20 Nov 1833 in Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland; buried in Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland. He married Elizabeth Hogan, born abt 1774; died 14 Jun 1832 in Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland; buried in Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland. Notes for William Hogan He emigrated from Ireland at age 20. He settled at Ochre Pit Cove in 1785 and moved to Northern Bay 8 years later. I wonder whether he was initially a fisherman who returned to Ireland in the Fall - after fishing from the Spring (after Easter) to the late Fall. In the Newfoundland Ancestor, Volume 12 Issue 1 pp 13-15, John O'Mara identified him as one of the first members of the Benevolent Irish Society. Originally founded in Carbonear, O'Mara lists all the members as of February 17, 1806 which includes the 74 Founding Members. In the Plantation Book he is mentioned twice. In 1785 he rented a plot in Ochre Pit (Oaker Pits) Cove from Jonathan Parsons for 1 shilling per annum. In 1803, it indicated that he acquired a plot in Northern Bay. His plot was 65 yards (East to West) by 64 yards (South to North). It indicated that the plot was wooded and that he cleared the woods himself. John Johnson was his eastern neighbor and John Commins was his western and southern neighbor. Jim McCarthy indicates that the Plantation Book has his birth as Gert Crosbie in her Birth, Deaths and Marriages in Newfoundland indicates that he died on 20 Nov 1833 at age 72. That year and the age bothers me. One William is listed on the 1832 Voters List for Northern Bay, Bay de Verde District. If he were alive, I'd expect two Williams to be listed (he and his son). The list included Patrick, Richard, James Senior, James Junior, James (McNamara), John and Joseph Hogan. James (McNamara) Hogan and Joseph Hogan are not on my lists of descendants of William. the Planter. Information from Ed Chafe- August 24, 1999 John Hogan married Sarah Rixon of Job's Cove on 20 October John and Sarah had at least seven children. There is a strange notation on the list, "Br. B" which may indicate where they lived in Northern Bay. John is listed in the 1835 Voter's List. There is no headstone for any of this family. Notes for Richard Francis Tobin Lived at 52 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Seems that he was based in Channel Newfoundland, St. Pierre, and North Sydney. The following appeared in the North Sydney Newspaper under the heading: Thrilling Escape from Death - Forty-eight hours in the Rigging of a Sunken Vessel, then Rescued by Life Lines. North Sydney, Nova Scotia, May 8, 1895: Capt. R.H. Tobin of North Sydney, has arrived home, having lost his schooner, the Freddie Walter, on the Penguin Islands, which consist of 22 rocks about ten miles from the rock bound coast, where many a good ship and crew have met their fate. Capt. Tobin left St. Pierre on the 19th ult. for this port in ballast. The following Tuesday morning, a heavy breeze from the southwest came up. The pumps got choked. They headed for Burgo. She was then about 80 miles from St. Pierre. The weather became too thick to make Burgo; wore ship again; the pumps being now

10 10 free, and the course shaped for Miquelon. The wind veered southerly, increasing to a gale, the foresail was carried away and the storm trisail was bent in its stead. The foresail was repaired and set and the captain went down in his cabin to take his position. While examining his charts, he heard his crew shout "breakers". He at once rushed on deck and grabbed the helm and put it to port. He was just a minute too late, for the vessel struck on the western end of the rocks. The Captain shouted to stand by the ship. One poor fellow, Thomas Power of Placentia Nfld. jumped for the rock and was not seen afterwards. Two others jumped and landed safely on the rock. The vessel lurched off the rock and began to sink rapidly, and about half a mile further down a break was seen in the rocks into which she was driven. She sank to the sheer poles, and the captain and another man took to the rigging, where they remained for forty-eight hours. She struck at a. m. on Tuesday the 23rd ult. The first night they were in the rigging, the bottom was knocked out of the vessel. Some fishing boats took the men off with difficulty. If the wind had not subsided the men on the rock would have been washed away. As it was they were hauled through the water to the fishing boats with the aid of life lines and were greatly exhausted. A quote from Canadiana: "Northern Bay has had its tragedies too, as well, four fine young men from this place went on the ice one morning, the Arctic ice was into the shore line. Two Hogan boys, they were brothers (Patrick and Martin. sons of Maurice Hogan and Jean O'Flaherty) Willy March (son of Cecily Hogan and Simeon March) and Richard Fahey (son of Cecelia Hogan and Thomas Fahey), died here that day. The wind had veered and the ice of course went out with it. Marchs' body was the only one recovered and I can remember so well the older one's telling of the day the 'little steam boat; came in the harbor with the body of Young March, his was the only one recovered. You may depend that this was a sad time in Northern Bay." Also see Ed Chafe's description which is part of Bernard Hogan's record. Bernard was the sole survivor of the tragedy iii Elizabeth 4 March "Betsy", born in ; christened 1 Jul 1860 in Corpus Christi, Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland; died She married James O'Neill. 106 iv John 4 March "Bishop", born 13 Jul 1863 in Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland; christened 21 Jul 1863 in Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland; died 5 Nov 1939 in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. Notes: Sources: Matt Mullaly and Raelene Earle Note: Raelene indicates that the DOB was 21 Jul Obituary: Bishop March was born at Northern Bay on July 13, He attended school there until he was fourteen years old. He used to assist his father, Simon March, an enterprising businessman, and from him acquired those sound and thorough principles of order and method which later him so conspicuous in his ecclesiastical career. He entered St. Patrick's Hall in 1877, and in the following year, St. Bonaventure's College where he pursued his studies with marked success. From St. Bonaventure's, he proceeded to Assumption College, near Montreal, where he spent two years, and in 1881 went to the College of St. Sulpice, Montreal. In 1882 he went to Propaganda College, Rome. Where he was ordained Priest on March 16, 1889, arriving in Newfoundland in June. Father March's first appointment was as a curate at Harbor Grace, in For many years he did missionary work in several parts of the extensive Diocese, including Labrador. He was consecrated Bishop of Harbor Grace on November 4, 1906, by His Grace, Archbishop Howley. The sermon on that occasion was preached by Monsignor McCarthy, an eloquent speaker. The celebration was a unique event as it marked the first occasion that a native of Newfoundland was consecrated Bishop of Harbor Grace. Bishop March quietly observed, on March 16, 1939, the Golden Jubilee of his ordination to the Priesthood. It was his wish that there be no public demonstration. However, the spontaneous response on that occasion not alone from the Clergy, but also from various sections of the public, bore testimony to the love and esteem in which Bishop March was held throughout Newfoundland. Bishop March died at the palace here on January The morning of his death he was up at his usual hour and celebrated Mass- a fitting climax to a lifetime of service in God's vineyard, as he began for the last time with the words: "I will go unto the alter of God, to God Who giveth joy to my youth." At one p.m.. as he was being called to lunch it was found that he was dead, having passed away about half an hour earlier. The funeral services were held on January 16. The congregation representing all classes and creeds from many parts of Newfoundland, was the largest ever seen here. Special arrangements had been made by the Newfoundland Railway, and a train arrived at Harbor Grace at 11 a.m. with over three hundred passengers. The Mass of Requiem began at 11:30 o'clock with Most Reverend E. P. Roche D.D., Archbishop of St. John's occupying the Episcopal throne, and attended by Right Rev. F.D. McCarthy P. A., V.G. Right Rev. J. Murphy, P.P.

17 17 and Right Rev, T. J. Flynn. Celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Wm. Finn, P. P. Grand Falls with Rev. M. F. Dinn, P.P., North River, as deacon and Rev. M. P. Dwyer. P.P. Harbor Main, as sub-deacon. Rev. J. M. O'Neill and Rev F. P. Meaney of Immaculate Conception Cathedral acted a Master of Ceremonies. The panegyric to the memory of the late Bishop was delivered by His Grace the Archbishop. 107 v Louisa 4 March, born in ; christened 1 Jan 1867 in Corpus Christi, Northern Bay, Conception Bay, Newfoundland.
