1 The Wahroongler Bulletin of The Rotary Club of Wahroonga Meeting 7.15 a.m. at the Warrawee Bowling Club Chartered First breakfast club in Australia Wednesday, May Vol 41 No 44 OFFICIAL! A RECORD $190,000 RAISED THIS YEAR AT NOVUS! WOW! Until after the next Novus Board Meeting has been convened, final figures and distribution to the beneficiaries will not be known, but the Rotary Club of Wahroonga Youth Projects will benefit by $36,600, (our 20% fee for service). Thanks to all who attended and purchased and our many sponsors, including Cam & Margaret Turner. We thank Cam also for organising the Silent Auction this year. Cam has resigned from Rotary he is now working during the week in Canberra and returning home only on weekends, and we wish him and his family well. The big thanks go to Peter and Garry, who with Karen s assistance, coped with the many aspects of organising such a successful event, and who with Richard P have served on the Novus Board for the past 10 years. We also thank all families involved, for without their support this event could not have continued. A pleasant surprise this week from Judith Poole, Headmistress of Abbotsleigh - a thank you plaque, which will be on display at the Changeover Dinner on June 29, and a card with the words: Please pass on my thanks to Wahroonga Rotary for our Aboriginal Scholars Program. Building an inclusive and strong future through education is the key. May I also congratulate you on the vibrant NOVUS dinner and your work for youth. Regards, Judith Please check that you have the Changeover Dinner in your diaries, and note it is in the evening at Asquith Golf Club, not a breakfast meeting. Sergeant Steve is preparing a comprehensive presentation of this Rotary year, so if you have any special photographs, could you please send to him this week for inclusion. This week we meet at Pymble Golf Club, for the Bobbo Presentation night, combining with St Ives, Ku-ring-gai and Turramurra Clubs. I do hope you booked by last Friday when we needed to advise the caterers. If you would still like to join in a great night please ask Secretary Terry if there is sufficient seating available. No promises though. Our Club will be host at this event, and we would like you to arrive by 6.30 pm and assist in the setting up. Meeting starts at 7.00 pm. 2 A FULL HOUSE - 60 TABLES, 600 PEOPLE Novus s $190,000 for youth projects the 10th success The figures for the Novus Dinner are finally in net takings $190,000, an announcement by bean counter Garry Webb that drew applause from the club when he announced it at last week s meeting. Peter Smith spoke and said that on the Saturday night of May 7 we had 600 people at Miramare Gardens, with 35 sponsored tables. There were auction items, silent auction items, we had raffles, we had wine sales, and we had lots of fun, tremendous ingredients for a really successful night. We had a jolly good time. Then Garry Webb told us how good a night it was. Garry then shattered the goodwill of the audience by claiming he still had the winning ticket in the raffle. Actually, in the later fines session he was the subject of derision from nearly half the audience who said he had individually claimed when he was he was selling the raffle tickets that he was selling each person the winning ticket. So much for the Four-Way Test. In fact the winner was the treasurer of KYDS,. Lucky Charlie. Garry said the overall revenue of the night was more than $300,000, with a net $190,000. The silent auction collected some$35,000. Our take was 20% for running the whole night, which will realise us $38,000 to be spent on all our Youth projects. The Four Winds, The Four Canoes Our guest speaker last week was Greg Meyer, who has worked for 25 years developing and delivering award-winning programs in the areas of leadership, cultural change, strategic focus, team effectiveness, sustainability, sales training and innovative thinking. Greg would be our first speaker to arrive on a Harley-Davidson. He has worked for decades with RYLA, and he put on the screen the Four Winds, also known as The Wheel of Life, to Pacific Islander s it s The Four Canoes, in South America it s the Four Jaguars. In the Coptic Christian Church it s the Circle of the Four Winds. The Four Winds are a concept that if you have them all four blowing together, the wheel rolls. His address is just too hard to summarise or record it was delivered with movements all over the dais. After his address, Anne Prescott brought out the two Quiet Achievers Anne Poole and Warren Poole, and you can read about them further on. TEACHING, TRAINING, ENCOURAGING Husband-and-wife teachers two Quiet Achievers Last week s meeting saw the final Vocational Service Awards for the year, when we honoured two people noted as Quiet Achievers. International Service Committee chair Anne Prescott brushed the snows of Nepal off her furs and crossed over to contribute to the Vocational Service Committee. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Technology, where she is acting Head of the School of Education, and she honoured a husband and wife team of teachers and school principals Anne Poole and Warren Poole. Vocational Committee chair Angus Robinson said that through the year the club had honoured Teachers, with a grand dinner, people who had shown Pride of Workmanship, people who trained apprentices, and now, the Quiet Achievers. The citation for Warren Poole was read by the guest speaker for the day, Greg Meyer.
3 WARREN POOLE, University of Technology Sydney Warren Poole was a highly regarded and esteemed primary Principal, serving in many schools across the state in various leadership roles. Warren was Principal of Denistone East PS at the time of his retirement. He was previously Principal at St Ives North PS and Allambie Heights PS. Even now, several years after his retirement, no matter what school you go into someone will know Warren Poole. He was, and is a prodigious networker and is renowned for his support and encouragement of teachers at all stages of their careers. He was recognised by the NSW Primary Principals Association for his contribution to the profession by being awarded Life Membership. Engaged and dynamic, Warren has spent many years supporting the Department of Education Graduate Recruitment program, interviewing graduate students for their suitability to teach. Warren is the Professional Experience Coordinator for the School of Education at UTS and continues to use his knowledge of DoE and BOSTES to inform the next generation of teachers. Warren designed a website for the UTS students to work through so that getting a teaching position at the end of their course is much easier. He has included examples, templates, and ideas about what to do in interviews, and is very generous with his time by working through applications with students. In a time when there are many primary beginning teachers without permanent employment, the website and mentoring given by Warren has meant that a remarkable number of UTS beginning teachers have started 2016 with permanent teaching positions. Warren exemplifies a Quiet Achiever, always going the extra mile. The Pooles mentor, Anne Prescott, read the citation for Anne Poole. ANNE POOLE, University of Technology Sydney As a Principal, Anne Poole was a leader both in her own schools and amongst her peers. Always ready to provide support and wisdom to her fellow principals, Anne never sought the spotlight. Many teachers at all levels in schools were the beneficiary of her dedication to supporting and encouraging quality teaching in NSW public schools. Anne was Principal of Elanora Heights PS at the time of her retirement but was well-known across the Northern Sydney Region, having been Principal of Avalon PS and teaching in a number of other schools. Anne was an active member of the NSW Primary Principals Association, representing her local area on State Council and in various working parties and reference groups. Anne s focus as a school leader was always on ensuring a quality learning environment for students. Her particular expertise in mathematics teaching continues to make a wide impact through her work at UTS. A major problem for primary teacher education students is that many of them are anxious about their maths knowledge and ability to teach maths. Anne and Warren have combined to revamp the primary maths teacher education program so that students are made aware of these issues and, more importantly, enabled in their learning of mathematics teaching. It is so amazing to see primary teacher education students excited about mathematics because they finally see what has been the impediment in their mathematics learning all through school. Anne Poole has quietly worked to improve the mathematics teacher education subjects at UTS and exemplifies the Quiet Achiever. Warren and Anne Poole with Anne Prescott and Angus Robinson Why pay money to have your family tree traced; go into politics and your opponents will do it for you. ~Author unknown~ Politicians are people who, when they see light at the end of the tunnel, go out and buy some more tunnel. ~John Quinton~
4 Bill Gates grants $38m for polio vaccine Japan s Takeda Pharmaceuticals is to get $38 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop a crucial, low-cost polio vaccine for use in developing countries, says Fortune Magazine. The company will use the grant to supply at least 50 million doses per year. Fortune says that as part of a global plan to eradicate the crippling disease, of which experts say the world could see the last case this year, countries will need to switch from using oral polio vaccine (OPV) to using so-called inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) to ensure the disease does not reappear. Bill and Melinda Gates Experts fear a substantial worldwide shortage of IPV once every country in the world is ready to make the switch, and polio eradication strategists have been looking at how to avert that shortfall by encouraging new manufacturers into the sector. Chris Elias, the Gates Foundation s head of global development, said the partnership would help ensure that the world has enough vaccine to get the job done and maintain a polio-free world. Takeda said in a statement it would use the Gates funding to develop, licence and supply at least 50 million doses per year of so-called Sabin-strain inactivated poliovirus vaccine (sipv) to more than 70 developing countries. Fortune says tthe shot will be made available at an affordable price for countries supported by the GAVI vaccines alliance, which is backed by the Gates Foundation, the World Health Organisation, UNICEF and others to fund immunisation programs in poor countries. A question: Where does Rotary sit in all this? Line up to play for our club You thought the cricket season was over? No. Abhi Pouled, with his Basanta Foundation has challenged the club to a cricket match and on behalf of the club, Kerri Hodge has accepted It is scheduled for Sunday, June 5, at Karuah Oval, Turramurra, details to be settled. This is why Kerri was appealing at last week s meeting for any semi-retired Test crickets in our midst (all, all right, Sheffield Shield will do) to nominate to be chosen (all right, some previous experience needed), and for all members, relatives and friends to plan to turn up on the day. There will be a levy of $15, and a sumptuous Nepalese lunch provided (make sure you taste the mo mos). Editor warns: I have seen this team play and they are seriously good. Ken is bringing some order to the club s 400 flags Ken Broadhead told last week s meeting that the club holds perhaps 400 Rotary club banners collected over 40 years in Australia and overseas by travelling Rotarians. Steve McGregor has photographed them all and out them onto a Powerpoint presentation. They will scroll through during the Changeover Dinner. I also plan to do a database of the banners, I ll be circulating it and inviting members who recognise banners to tell when and where they were picked up. If you ve got any other banners, please give them to me and I ll put them on the data base. APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR ATTENDING ABBOX CAMP AT KNOX Applications for the Sony Foundation Camp for Children with a disability Abbox - are now open. The camp provides respite care for children with a disability and is at no cost to families and the children will have a great deal of fun and be well cared for. See Helen Knox for details of how to apply.
5 PRESIDENT-ELECT NEIL LOOKS FOR ANOTHER JIM VERCO President-elect Neil McWhannell has a real challenge, he fears it might be impossible to solve he is looking for someone to take over Community Service from Jim Verco next Rotary year. It may prove an incredible challenge for one person to do as much as Jim, so it might require two persons to fill Jim s shoes.. If anyone is interest in solely or jointly taking on that role I d greatly appreciate it.
