I enjoy the juxtaposition of traditional next to modern in cities which exposes architectural evolutions over the decades. Discovering what has been built where, when and why is fascinating and helps my understanding of the city in general. PAGE 2

I enjoy analysing and dissecting the urban realm and try to understand why and how a city was shaped from the first settlers to its role in todays world. PAGE 3

5 CASE STUDY BERLIN SCHAUSPIELHAUS A seminar in western architecture produced a class project which assesses the historic architecture and planning principles of the West using a case study. My end of term project was presented as a 3D architectural model to asses the construction processes, dimensions, setting and positioning within the city. PAGE 4

6 PROJECT CONSTRUCTION OF CARPORT A full exercise in planning, design and construction resulted in a two-car carport. Using various scrap and left-over materials from a local lumber yard I erected this two-car garage in July The entire experience was very rewarding from the design stage and construction process to the finished project with asphalt shingle roofing, storage and power. 7 Future Phase 4X: High-rise for increased density CASE STUDY TOMORROW S SUBURB This case study aimed to solve contemporary issues of suburbs in North America. Issues addressed were density, service availability, linear infrastructure, renewable energy, smart-design, social housing and ecological footprint. This creative and conceptual model expresses a suburb that coexists within its natural environment. 800 people live a green life on this 200 acre parcel just north of Duncan, BC. 85% of the property is untouched to attain maximum ecological integrity. 8 Imported to Google Earth CASE STUDY STUDENT GAZEBO A case study to create a study space for students on the campus of the University of Victoria. This concept shaped like an oversized gazebo to reflect the outdoor location with integrated wireless access situated in the busy quad at the heart of our campus. The idea is to provide a friendly outdoor space in which students can work online. Power is generated from a theoretical solarpaneled roofing. PAGE 7

9 PROJECT SUSTAINABLE HOUSE The aim of this project, located on a fictional southern facing lot, was to employ sustainable residential technologies. High-end energy saving appliances were located along one stone walls to ensure a relatively small linear infrastructure. Recycled wood, water regeneration and solar angles were design principles of this 2000sqft home. Requested south facing kitchen, living room and master bed with unassuming balcony were incorporated with a western courtyard creating a bedroom wing. Two parallel stone walls provide visible structure and contrast. PAGE 8

13 CREATING RESTORING PROBLEM SOLVING CREATING RESTORING CARS AND FOUNDING A2B IMPORTS Throughout my undergraduate career I restored various young-timer German cars. As a result of several years of parts sourcing I co-founded A2B Imports with Ben Rust (BA Economics UBC) when I moved to Germany in May The idea was to provide rare German car parts to the Canadian market. I did the parts sourcing in Germany, designed and built the website and Ben received and sold the items throughout Canada. The website quickly grew to a 1,200 views monthly and we processed 2-3 big shipments a month with a modest but healthy profit at either end. The experience was very rewarding because Ben and I passionately followed a learningby-doing approach exploiting a niche market uncovered after years of restoring cars.
