6 Information about the "Network for Historical Studies of Gender and Social Work" At the National Congress for Social Work in MainziGermany on 21 st September 2001 a European network was founded under the name Network for Historical Studies of Gender and Social Work. Accordingly, it aims to enforce and co-ordinate the research on the history of Social Work in Europe during the period between 1900 and 1960 consequently regarding gender aspects. Professor Sabine Hering (University of Siegen, Germany) and Professor Berteke Waaldijk (University of Utrecht, The Netherlands) took the initiative for the first meeting and the founding of the network. This European venture is necessary to take stock of the - very different - state of research regarding the history of Social Work in all countries involved to name the desiderata of further research to find ways to make the findings comparable at all, due to the very different histories and systems of social welfare and social work to create the conditions for studies comparing the development of national welfare structures regarding gender aspects on a European level to balance the state of knowledge by special studies on the national distinctive features during the periods of development between 1900 and 1960 to give insight into similarities and distinctions of social problems and structures of help in the different European countries to finally lead to questions about the reasons for these developments. So far the members of the network come from 23, mostly European countries: Albania, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Finland, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovenia, and the USA. More countries are invited to join the future co-operation. The members represent a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines: history, gender studies, women's studies, Social science, Social work sciences and political sciences, to name the most common ones.

7 234 Information about the "Network for Historical Studies" The first meeting at the congress in Mainz leaded to the foundation of the network and brought important data regarding biographical analyses of female and male pioneers of Social Work as well as data on the history of welfare organizations in the countries involved. This book presents the lectures given at the conference and shows furthermore a first selection of research interests of the members. The University of Siegen kindly supports the development of the network by funding the coordination office for two years. The network is an open research community and welcomes new members and anybody interested in exchange and information.
