1 Meole Brace Churchyard Memorial Inscriptions 2012 With reference to earlier surveys conducted in 1933 and 1983 by Andy Digby, Parish Warden, 2012.

2 INTRODUCTION The earliest known survey was conducted by the Warden, H.T. Money in 1933, which is held by Shropshire Archives. Ref P186/B/6/2. While of enormous value now that many inscriptions are gone, it has been found to include a number of errors and omissions. Also the plan included, while helpful, was extremely vague. A second survey was conducted by the Women's Institute in 1983 and is held in Shropshire Archives by the Shropshire Family History Society. Again it is of great value but its compilers were obviously unaware of the 1933 survey, resulting in many missed inscriptions which were no longer legible to them. They used completely different numbering references. In this work I have called on both existing surveys to assist with the new one, and the names and dates have been checked against the Parish Registers to make it as accurate as possible. The inscriptions given are a combination of what is currently still legible, that quoted in the earlier surveys, and a number of corrections from Parish Registers. Much confusion has arisen over the similarity of 5 and 3, and 4 and 1. For example, a date originally transcribed as 1834 may be found in the register in In addition, each inscription is accompanied by notes on its type and condition. I have made a new churchyard plan which is not to scale but does show all known graves clearly and in relation to each other. I have used the 1933 Survey numbering references but have included the 1983 survey reference numbers in brackets. It is intended that copies of this survey be held by Holy Trinity Church to assist with any enquiries, and by the Shropshire Family History Society for use by the general public. Andy Digby Parish Warden 2012 Disclaimer: Due to the erosion of inscriptions on stonework and the sometimes very poor legibility of the registers, the accuracy of this record cannot be guaranteed. It is offered as my best guess rather than an authority. Legend. Burial not found in Registers. 12th Sept 1765 Corrections from Registers

5 THE FRENCHMAN'S GRAVE No 192 is known as "The Frenchman's" grave. The legend attached to it is that Penaud declared that he did not believe in the existence of God, but that if his tomb was broken open by other than human agency this belief would be proved wrong. A laburnum seed found its way into the tomb and eventually grew into a tree with a stem some 6 inches thick. In the early part of 1919 during a gale, the tree was blown down, bursting open the tomb. The tree was removed but the root in the tomb left, which sent up shoots on either side and formed into an arch by Richard Webb of Upper Pulley, who looked after the Churchyard from early 1919 till his death in HTM Dec 1933 ( Note: see final page) No 1. 43 J. Penaud was a prisoner of war. It is reported that he did not believe in the existence of God, and declared that if he was mistaken, his tomb would be broken open by other than human agency. A laburnam tree eventually grew from one side of his tomb. About the year 1920 during a severe storm the tree was blown down, bursting open the tomb breaking the surrounding railings. When repairs were carried out a small portion of root was left, which in course of time sent up a shoot on either side, then when tall enough were joined together to form an arch by Richard Webb then caretaker who took a keen interest in all that concerned the churchyard. H.T.M Photo from cutting from Shrewsbury Chronicle Jan 1941 MEMORIALS INSIDE THE CHURCH Some of these memorials were originally inside the previous church, demolished While not quoted here the inscriptions are still clear and not subject to erosion, and may be readily viewed on a visit to the church.
