2 Architectural Feature: Wayne State University Chemistry Building 2013 ACEC Michigan Honorable Conceptor Award Winner The Wayne State University Chemistry Building was recently recognized by ACEC Michigan with an Engineering Excellence Award. A core science facility of this great educational institution, open laboratory work areas and inviting public spaces now encourage multidiscipline coordination, which is at the heart of scientific discovery. The new front door building addition creates a bold, exciting new image that will help draw the best and brightest students to the campus and the sciences. The fact that this world class facility is located in the heart of Detroit reinforces the message that the engineering capital of the world is still right here Significant effort went into the project s design and engineering to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Silver rating. Many of these sustainable concepts and initiatives are visible and tactical, for example bicycle racks located just outside of the East entry of the building. These racks coupled with showering facilities encourage building occupants to commute to the building by means of bicycle. Vegetated roofing was located on visible roof location such as the roof on the Lecture Hall and Administrative Block. High performance glazing, photocell directed controls and lighting systems work as a total system to harvest as much natural daylight as possible. Harley Ellis Devereaux provided architectural and engineering services for renovation and expansion of the building.

The Grants section provides information on four of the main programs administered by the foundation: The Evans Memorial Historical Preservation Grant, Public Awareness Grants, and The Rae Dumke Development Fund. 4 Breaking News: Federal Reserve Building (Detroit) Gets Redesign Photos provided by QuickenLoans.com Press Room Rock Ventures, along with Bedrock Real Estate Services, today announced that Rossetti, an international architectural planning and design firm, will move its headquarters to the historic Federal Reserve Building located at Fort and Shelby Streets in the heart of downtown Detroit. Beginning this July, Rossetti s team of 60 architects, planners and designers will occupy the fourth floor, or 13,000 square feet of space, in the Federal Reserve building which has been vacant since Rossetti has also been hired by Bedrock to redesign the entire building, breathing life into the celebrated bank building by developing state-of-the-art, unique and creative offices and ground floor retail spaces. According to Matt Rossetti, President of Rossetti, The redesign will pay homage to the architectural significance of the past and respect its ancestral bones, Rossetti added. At the same time, we plan to incorporate new workplace design concepts, such as an open floor plan, collaborative team spaces and use of natural materials. Rock Ventures purchased the 176,000 square foot Federal Reserve building last year. The original structure was built in In 1951, an eight story glass and marble annex designed by Minoru Yamasaki (the renowned architect who designed the World Trade Center) was added and connected to the 1927 structure.

5 2013 Dumke Open Raises $9500 The 2013 Dumke Open, held at the Stonebridge Golf Club, Ann Arbor, MI, raised $9500 for the Dumke Development Fund, a portion of which will be directed to an architectural library, housed at existing libraries in Michigan. 9 An Exhibition and Symposium at the Cranbrook Educational Community June 2013 Michigan s industry and design intertwined creating an epicenter of modern design. Michigan visionaries touched nearly every aspect of American life. Detroit s automobile manufacturers didn t just produce automobiles; they styled them to become synonymous with the American dream. The state s furniture makers didn t just manufacture furniture; they revolutionized the look of the American office and home. Michigan architects Albert Kahn, Eero Saarinen, and Minoru Yamasaki didn t just design buildings; they defined an era. Michigan s industry, prosperity, and educational institutions created a synergy that attracted the design talent that formed the foundation for modern American design. This exhibition celebrates Michigan s outstanding contributions to Modern design and the stories of the people who made it happen. 10 Fund It Right Protect It Forever: Building Historic Champions Michigan Historic Preservation Network Workshop, June 20-23, 2013 Small historic preservation groups from across Michigan are invited to Fund It Right, Protect It Forever: Building Historic Champions a fundraising workshop in Flint, Michigan from June 20-23, Attendees will learn how to create and execute a complete fundraising plan through practical exercises, case studies and discussion. The First Presbyterian Church of Flint will host the sessions and the Sloan Museum and Applewood Estate will hold evening receptions for speakers and attendees. The sessions, led by nationally recognized experts and statewide authorities, will address fundraising issues facing small preservation organizations, historical societies, Main Street organizations or house or living history museums. Topics to be covered include how to get an organization ready to fundraise, how to raise money for annual operating expenses and how to conduct a successful capital campaign. Attendees will practice their new skills during the workshop, receiving direct feedback on various topics, including membership development plans and asking for gifts from major donors. Multiple leaders from one organization are encouraged to attend, including at least two Board members and the Executive Director where available. The cost is $50 per person.
