He possessed a set of unusual characteristics, which were common to a man of his generation, but seem foreign today. On the outside, he came across as being gruff, demanding, and unmovable. But on the inside was a man who worked hard, who enjoyed the simple things of life, and loved his family very much. He was born in a time before any modern conveniences and had trouble grasping the marvels of technology. Yet, he wasn't afraid to try new things. He learned how to drive, he took cruises, he flew in airplanes, and he managed the basics of operating a VCR. He most definitely adhered to strict routines, but he learned new ways even late in life. He learned how to play the organ. He had trouble keeping a beat, but he never had musical experiences prior to that time. He saw the need for God in his life and became a regular member at church in his 80's. After Grandma died, he had to learn to live without her, which had to be very difficult after 72 years. He was a proud man, but not in a bad sense. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He pointed this out to people by saying, "I started all of this." He was proud of his age and good health. How he achieved that status is a mystery because he had a very poor diet most of his life, smoked cigars, drank beer regularly, and didn't even know what exercise was. He was proud of his work, and if you had the chance to see something he painted or wallpapered, he would give the details of the entire job. He was a very talented craftsman. You could not describe him as a warm and fuzzy kind of guy. Compliments, words of encouragement, expressions of love were not in his vocabulary. He wasn't outwardly friendly - not a people person. But, people really liked Charlie. He was a person you could joke around with and enjoy listening to him talk about his life. He was loved

38 34 and respected just because he was Charlie - warts and all. As his granddaughter, he will forever be the "Turtle Man" in my mind. I was both fascinated and afraid of the many turtles he raised in his backyard. I wanted to see them, but I usually stayed on the skinny sidewalk, thinking they wouldn't "get me" there. I remember the smell of cigars, and the sound of very loud organ music. I remember hearing him say, "Golly Gee", a lot, and hearing him mispronounce certain words like "recipete" and "wrastlin". I picture him in his painting clothes and his fishing clothes. I see him dressed "to the nines" in his three piece suit, plaid shirt, wild tie, and fancy shoes. I don't have a backlog of good times shared with him, like many others do. Our's wasn't that kind of relationship. But I am, and always will be a "Stambaugh girl". I am short, and I have bushy eyebrows. I am proud of the man who "started it all" and I loved him. Written with love by Karen (Stambaugh) Yingling Jan 18, 2003 "DAD" Dad was born Nov. 10, 1904 in York County. He was the eldest of 13 children. He attended grade school to the 8th grade. As a boy, he went to work at some farms helping with general farm work.. He had many stories that he told us about his life on the farm. One in particular was the time he decided to braid the tails of a cow and a bull together to see what would happen. The result was the cow loosing her tail. Scared, he buried the cows tail and never told anyone about it for many years. When the farmer inquired about what had happened to the cow's tail, he told the farm owner the cow must have gotten its tail caught in the fence and pulled it off. After leaving the farm, he went to work at the silk mill. There he met mom and they married on Nov 19, 1925.Through the next 23 years, dad and mom's 7 children were born. Dad and mom were married 72 years. After working at a number of different places and jobs, he decided that working for himself was how he wanted to support his family. He became a house painter, paperhanger and sold printing on the side. Dad never made a lot of money doing this but we always had food to eat and clothes to wear. He believed in always doing the best job he could for the people he worked for. Some of his customers would have dad return every 10 years to paint their house. He not only painted their homes, but would do any other maintenance work they needed done. One customer told dad that he knew so much that he has forgotten more than most people ever new. Dad loved to fish. As a young man, he would go fishing with his dad during the day and night. He often would walk from were he lived on Hay Street to Dave's Mill. There was one time he rode his bike to go fishing and caught so many fish, he had to make a number of trips on his bike to get all the fish home. Dad's love for fishing continued into his adult life. Whether it was sitting along a creek or on the ocean in his boat he built from a kit, he had to get his fish lines in the water. Dad fished in all kinds of weather. There were many times he would have to break the ice on the creek to get his lines into the water. The fish he caught often became our evening meal. When dad caught a big fish, he was so proud that he would come home and put on his suit to have his picture taken with his catch. He often would go fishing on the first day of trout season. One year he had his picture and story in the newspaper. Each summer he would pack the car and the boat with everything you would need for 2 weeks and take the family to Ocean City, MD for a summer vacation and fishing trip. It didn't always matter if we caught something or not, it was being out in the boat and on the water that mattered the most. One year while he was at Ocean City, he was backing his boat trailer down the boat ramp to launch his boat into the water. As the boat trailer approached the water, he slipped and fell from his car and to his horror, he had to watch his boat trailer and car slip beneath the bay waters. Needless to say, dad had a 'bad day' of fishing that day. Another time dad and a friend went fishing at the river. The fish weren't biting where they were anchored, so he told his friend to pull the anchor up because he wanted to move to another fishing spot. Dad started the motor on the boat and thought his fishing buddy had pulled the anchor up. What he didn't know was his friend forgot to pull the anchor up. Dad started moving the boat and thought the motor was not moving the boat as it should. He didn't realize the anchor was dragging on the bottom and slowing the boat down. About that time, the anchor finally caught on a rock, jerking the boat to a stop so hard that his friend flew from the back of the boat to the front in one leap. Dad was a volunteer fireman for the York City fire dept. He would march in their annual parades and attended their

39 35 conventions, meetings and picnics. After the parade was over, the fireman would always gather to have a picnic. Usually the day after the picnic, was a day when everyone would try to remember exactly what happened after the parade and how they got home. One night while lying in bed, he heard the fire alarm bells ringing. He counted the bells and knew it was a large fire. He thought he would go out on the roof to see if he could see where the fire was. Now dad liked to sleep as God created him. In his haste to see the fire, he didn't bother to put any clothes on and proceeded to climb out the third story window onto the roof. After stepping from the attic window and carefully climbing up the steep roof, he realized that climbing up the roof was a lot easier than climbing back down. Knowing if he stayed there, the neighborhood would have a story to tell when it became daylight. So, realizing the dangers, and having no choice, he decided that he would have to carefully climb down the roof and back into the house, all along hoping that no one saw him. Dad loved turtles and collected them. He kept and raised box turtles in his back yard. Turtles came to him from anyone who would find a turtle wondering about. He cared and fed them by hand and each winter he would make sure they were covered to help them though their winter hibernation. The turtles became to trust him so much that they would come to his back door for dad to feed them by hand. To many, he became known as the 'Turtle Man'. Dad instilled in his children a love for the outdoors, respect for family and friends and to treat other people, as we would like to be treated. Dad taught us that if something needed to be done around the house, you would find a way of doing it yourself. This was mostly done out of necessary, because he couldn't afford to pay anyone else to do the work. Our home on Walnut street was remodeled a number of times to meet the changing needs of a growing family. This included moving walls, adding windows and other work.
