3 THE STORY... {,...-'1y! -rvnh...", ACT : Gabriel von Eisenstein~as been sentenced to eight days in prison for a minor offense. He is about to leave for jail when Falke, his friend, persuades him to postpone surrendering and go instead to a ball that Prince Orlofsky is giy, ing. Falke has a little scheme in revenge for a practical joke Eisenstein once played upon him. (After a very gay masquerade, Eisenstein had abandoned the sleeping and intoxicated Falke, costumed as a'b'~t, in a public park, where he awakened to the jeers of the promeq,ad~rs on a Sunday morning.) Elaborating his plan, Falke also invites Eisenstein's wife, Rosalinda, her maid Adele, and Frank, the prisori warden, to the ball, where all are to appear under assumed identities. After a touching farewell, E\$enstein.departs, and Alfred, a former admirer of Rosalinda's, appears.' Finding her alone, Alfred makes love to her while singing and dpnking her husband's champagne. Soon, however, Warden Frank appears'in order to escort Eisenstein to jail or, as he jokingly puts it, his "lov~ly, lively pigeon-house." Alfred, in order to spare RosaincJa an~j.,hjmself the embarrassment of explaining the compromising circum~t.ukes, allows Frank to believe he is Eisenstein and goes to jail.,h! inprogre;ss. The Prince, very rich and very bored, is the. host. A4Fle' appears, wearing one of her mistress' ball-gowns. Eisenstein, posing as Marquis Renard, recognizes her, but Adele brazens out the situation to the bitter end, insisting that she is a successful actress. Rosaliodaarrives, masked, and is introduced as a Hungarian countess whq' will remain masked because she VOLA has a very jealous husband. Eisenstein' makes love to his own wife, Lisa Killinger and she succeeds in taking his repeater-watch away from him-a souvenir to be used as evidence of h,s misp~h~vior. The party breaks up Alexis Schultz Jeanne Drumm at dawn. (, l,:;!'. Kendra DuPuy /"'l-fl Wrn- Gabriel Zhi-Jun Su ACT : Alfred has spent the night in a cell, supervised by Frosch, the Laura Beth Johnson merry, drunken jailer. Frank, still tipsy, arrives to take over. Adele, who wants to be a real actress, comes to beg Frank, or the Chevalier ACT 1:~g~~V't'\5"rlofskY'S i~ Chagrin as she knows him, to further her career. Eisenstein finally reports for jail, Rosalinda arrives, and eventually everyone's true identity is revealed. Falke confesses that the evening was all his plotting, and, aided by the culprit, Champagne, it was a good joke on everyone.
