4 President s Message Bob Johnson, 2014 President What a year!!! I began my reign as President while still recuperating from brain surgery. I would like to thank everyone for their support during this time. In September of 2005 I became a REALTOR. After being snake bit for the first six months, I began to wonder if this was the line of work for me. I had a drawer filled with the blue agency relationship forms but no sales! I soon became active in the community with volunteer work and things seemed to fall into place. After two years in the business I was elected to a three year term as Director. At the end of that term I was asked to serve an additional year. In the nine years that I ve been a REALTOR, I have been active on the Board for seven of those years. There were a lot of things going on this year, starting with the planning retreat. The burning issues that came out of that discussion were professionalism and education. We boiled the theme down to build a culture of professionalism through education. A new task force was created to seek opportunities for our members to become more visible in the community in a united effort as the Real Estate Affiliates Care Team or Re-ACT. Another priority for the Board was to once again launch an advertising effort to encourage the use of REALTOR and to educate consumers to rely on valid web sites rather than sites like Zillow, Trulia and others. Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. I feel we ve had great team leaders and have been successful in our mission. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the following people: Tricia Schlosser for heading the Education Committee. Tricia was instrumental in bringing in top-notch instructors this past year. Amy Hullet for leading the way on Re-ACT. We added two events in addition to the REALTOR Ring Day which were the Backpacks for Kids Program and the United Way Day of Caring. Kristi Bohl and Lynnell Strothman for putting together a great committee for the 2014 REALTOR Convention of the Dakotas. The committee members, along with the Nancy Deichert and her staff, put in countless hours of planning and work to make this a successful convention. A special thank you to Nancy, Heather and Robyn at the Board Office. Without them it would not be possible to be in the role of President. It has been a privilege to serve as your President!

23 2014 REALTOR Convention of the Dakotas Passport to Excellence Celebration of Success Summary The 2014 REALTOR Convention of the Dakotas is history, and thanks to the tremendous dedication and talents of an amazing planning committee, it will go down in history as a phenomenal success. Here are just a few of the highlights from the event: There were 426 REALTORS registered and 119 affiliates, guests, spouses, etc., for a total registration of 545. Thanks to the Rochelle Eick who lead the registration efforts, all attendees received a warm welcome and a great tote bag filled with valuable give aways. Sheila Tom from Rapid City was the Grand Prize Winner of Caribbean Cruise for two. Thirty different vendors participated in the Expo at Sea exhibit hall. Terri Benson- Holmstrom and her crew, including Judy Maslowski, designed an Expo with an interesting variety of vendors and reached to out of the box possibilities. Premier Mortgage got the most votes for best booth at the Expo; and Dakota Title and Mode came in tied for a close second place. Under Karin Haskell s watch, the PR and Marketing for the convention was stronger than any other year and included printed pieces, a video, and marketing. Members knew about this event. We made a programming change and offered CE during the golf tournament, and 190 people attended the class. We also saw higher than usual attendance at the Friday morning CE with Jared James with about 143 attending. Tricia Schlosser and the Education Committee did a phenomenal job bringing some top notch education to the convention. All of the classes received high marks on the evaluations. Even the golfers toughed it out on a chilly, windy day. Eighty people signed up for the tournament, and 68 showed up to play the game and enjoy the treats and warmers offered by various hole sponsors. Thanks to Bob Johnson s expertise and experience in the world of golf, everyone had a good time at Hawktree. What to say about the decorating.from the time you came in to the Civic Center and walked the hallway to the Exhibit Hall, Amy Hullet and the decorating crew made sure attendees enjoyed the theme of the convention and the atmosphere of the Civic Center. From hauling logs, to setting up pool lounge chairs, to table decorations for each meal function, Amy and her committee did everything from folding napkins to cutting wood and building some of the decorations to assembling some of the pieces special ordered for our event. They were there early in the morning, they missed classes, and stayed until late at night to make it all spectacular. It was truly unbelievable.

24 One of the best things that came out of the convention with the presentation at the REALTOR of the Year lunch by the representative of the Spare Key Program. Spare Key helps families with very ill children make their mortgage payments so they don t lose their homes during difficult times. In a pass of the hat collection, and in a matter of 15 minutes, the generosity of REALTORS, affiliates and guests allowed us to give to Spare Key over $8,300!! ZuZu Band and Johnny Holm Band entertained the crowds until the bitter end on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, respectively. Media Productions built a phenomenal stage featuring a cruise ship and passport. In order to pull it all off with adequate space for booths, meal functions, dancing, classrooms, registration, and space to relax, we made the bold move to take the event to Bismarck Civic Center and it paid off. We were able to accommodate last minute vendors for the exhibit hall, classrooms could be expanded to hold larger audiences, and the registration area had ample space as well. And, all of this would not have come to fruition without the amazing, amazing and very generous participation of the sponsors who supported us. Thanks to Monica Kirkeide for spearheading the effort to raise over $50,000 in sponsorships. To all of the committee members, to all of the sponsors, and to everyone who attended, a very heartfelt thank you.
