Description of building(s) etc Site/building character The area where the hospital was built is in a high site, away from the city center. It was originally surrounded by greenery and with sweeping views of the sea. Despite its easy access feature, the isolation was guaranteed for the treatment of tuberculosis, with protection from dust and other unpleasant consequences of urban areas. Another important building in this neighborhood, which was constructed at the same period, was an orphanage Abrigo de Menores, which there was only the entrance building. Motta's project reflects his training at the National School of Fine Arts (ENBA) in Rio de Janeiro, with contradictory references for the modern and the national architecture, as a result of the clash between conservatives and academics on the one hand, and the arrival of new modern ideas, on the other. The entrance pavilion is the highlight of the set, reflecting the design of the avant garde movement "De Stijl".

5 The work was performed in the model pavilion, with units that are linked via covered walkways facing landscaped internal courtyards. The existence of these gardens permeating the building is followed by a sectorization and functional spaces and passageways that connect them, allowing the orientation of these places in relation to stroke. Another important point is the balcony that surrounds the main building, which is accessible to patients rooms and wards. Beyond the hygienic premises, the formal conception used the absence of ornaments, rationality and functionality. On the other hand was used a mixture of traditional techniques and the emerging technology of concrete, which reflected aesthetically in the set. Comparative significance 4. 4 canonical status (local, national, international) The building has not a wider importance if we think only in terms of its architectural features. However, it has great importance in national terms if we take into consideration the health policies of the first governments of Getulio Vargas (1930-

6 1945), and migration to the interior of architects graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, and its contribution to the built environment historic and reference values: The Nereu Ramos Hospital is an important example of hospitals for tuberculosis treatment built during the government of Getulio Vargas as president of Brazil ( ), especially during the period of the Estado Novo ( ). During this period were built several specialized hospitals for the diseases treated in isolation, such as tuberculosis, leprosy and mental illness. The building is also an example of professional practice in Brazil's interior of the architects graduated in the 1930s in National School of Fine Arts ENBA, in Rio de Janeiro. 5.
