1 Cremore Presbyterian Church The congregation of Cremore celebrated the bicentennial of their church in Since it was built in 1802, the Church has, in its two hundred years, seen many changes. It was built in the style of a 'bam' church that was very common in the early years of many congregations. The interior of the church has changed considerably over the years. Originally there was a central aisle with doors at each end - the present entrance door and another door which was situated behind where the pulpit is today. At that time the pulpit was placed in the centre of the long wall at the rear of the church, away from the road. m jt jt...,;,: r?._. ^.^mn III :i I i-a-li Cremore Presbyterian Church In the 1890's the original Session House was replaced to enable a high-pressure heating system to be installed and at the same time the layout of the interior of the church was altered. These alterations included the moving of the pulpit to its present location and the original single aisle being replaced by the two aisles, which are a feature of the church today. In 1927 David Haire donated the church's first organ in memory of his parents. Later on the Session House was removed and the present Session House built, including Session and Committee rooms, kitchen and toilets. Other improvements over the years have been the provision of a car park and the installation of electric light and a new heating system. Around 1953 further major renovations took place. The roof was renewed, the windows were replaced and the building re-plastered inside and out. More recently all doors have been renewed, the exterior of the church has aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa^^^^^^^^^^bmh^^^i^^h^i K^^B I Interior of the Church been painted and the car park resurfaced. Cremore Manse is situated in the townland of Rathconville and has been continuously the residence of the ministers since at least 1830 when Dr Strain lived there. Electric light and a telephone were installed in The manse has been renovated and restored several times, most extensively in 1984 at which time the installation of central heating took place. Twelve ministers have served Cremore Congregation during the past two centuries. Rev John Caldwell ( ) Rev John Caldwell was the first minister ordained in Cremore Congregation. He was a licentiate of the Monaghan and served Cremore for four years. Rev Joseph Crawford ( ) Rev Caldwell was followed by Rev Joseph Crawford, formerly of Clarkesbridge. He ministered to Cremore for 23 years. It is recorded that in 1811 he left the Burgher Synod and joined the Anteburgher Synod, which ceased to exist when the two synods came together in 1819 to form the Secession Synod. Rev Alexander Strain ( ) Rev Alexander strain was minister in Cremore for 50 years. He was a licentiate of the Presbytery of Markethill and was ordained on September 6th He married Mary Anne Crawford, the daughter of his predecessor and was awarded the degree of DD by an American University. During his ministry, the Synod of 82

He died as the result of an accident. When cycling to Poyntzpass Railway Station, he was struck by an army vehicle on the Poyntzpass, Markethill Road on December 7th, Rev John McCaughan ( ) The first minister to be called by the joint congregations of Cremore and Tyrone's Ditches, Rev McCaughan was a licentiate of Route Presbytery. He resigned in 1949 having received a call to the congregation of Legacurry, where he remained until his retirement in Rev William McAreavey ( ) Before receiving a call to Cremore and Tyrone's Ditches, Rev William McAreavey had served as assistant in Ballysillan, Belfast. He was ordained on February 22nd 1950 and resigned on being called to Glasgow's Eastpark Parish Church. He continued to serve there until his retirement in 2001 after 52 years in the ministry.
