3 BLUE KIE AHEAD INCE GRACE, JENNY AND I arrived at UMaine just over two years ago, we have truly enjoyed our interactions with many alumni and friends who genuinely care about this remarkable university. Events like the tillwater ociety dinner and the Charles. Allen Legacy ociety luncheon have allowed us to meet and thank hundreds of donors. We also have had the opportunity to engage supporters at cultural, educational and athletic events, and at meetings with individuals and couples in their homes and businesses. The sons and daughters of Maine will be grateful for your investment in their future. President Paul W. erguson It has been a joy and privilege for us to join with those who make UMaine a philanthropic priority and to witness the impact of these gifts. I am especially pleased to share with you that 100 percent of the President s Cabinet and the university s Board of Visitors generously gave to this year s Annual und and collectively contributed more than $200,000. It is a true sign of commitment when those who lead an institution are inspired to give financially, in addition to the excellent work they do every day on its behalf. Over the years, I have learned that while donors are inspired for many different reasons, our hearts embrace 2 University of Maine a common theme: making life better for others specifically for our students and the state we serve. While I ve enjoyed many high points in my personal and professional life, nothing surpasses the sense of reward and accomplishment that accompanies assisting others to fulfill their potential. Many of you are familiar with the Blue ky Project, UMaine s strategic planning process (umaine.edu/ blueskyplan), which focuses on how to define and deliver our 21st-century mission of teaching, research and public service in a financially sustainable manner. Blue ky also is about reconnecting the flagship university to the economic and cultural needs of Maine and the nation so that we may continue to have a major impact on the quality of people s lives. Over the past two years, a tremendous spirit of tenacity, collaboration and pride has evolved as some of our best faculty, staff, students and volunteers have explored and debated Blue ky priorities and strategies. But with the state currently contributing only about 42 percent of our operating budget, and a mandate to keep tuition low in order to guarantee student access, it is donors like you who hold the real keys to the University of Maine s future level of excellence. Unrestricted gifts that provide us the maximum flexibility to move forward are one of these keys. We also are counting on benefactors to champion strategic university priorities, including undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, endowed professorships and chairs, the revitalization of our historic district to house new innovative academic and outreach programs, and the enhancement of signature programs such as those in engineering. We view this report as one more way to say thank you, and to illustrate how philanthropy changes lives in Orono, across our state and around the world. Generous donors allow the University of Maine to realize its commitment to excellence in ways that would be impossible with public support alone. Gifts of every size translate into extraordinary experiences, not only for our students, but for the faculty, coaches and other members of the UMaine family who invest their lives in teaching, research, creative expression, athletic competition and much more. The impact of private support extends even further, enhancing the quality of life for many Maine citizens by funding a university that conducts research in areas such as wind and tidal energy, opiate addiction among infants, and forest ecosystem management. The thoughtfulness of our donors also funds vital outreach, such as University of Maine Cooperative Extension s Harvest for Hunger. ince 2000, this program has resulted in the donation of 600 tons of fresh produce to hungry Mainers. We are energized by a new spirit of collaboration among those who share a commitment to raising private support on behalf of UMaine. Most who have ties to our state appreciate the value of neighbors helping neighbors, such as when a tractor or boat needs repair, a storm strikes, a bumper crop of tomatoes ripen, or someone needs a ride to town. As part of emester at ea, I visited 12 countries; I ve been to Canada with the International Affairs Association for a Model UN conference, and while studying abroad in pain, I was able to go to Morocco, Ireland, rance, Greece, Croatia and Italy as well. o, in total that is 20! I m truly blessed. These opportunities have only increased my interest in working abroad after I graduate. It s a key ingredient to the success of the state as a whole. Paul G. Coulombe 75 received a tillwater Presidential Achievement Award at the society s annual dinner in outh Portland. Allen Legacy ociety, named for the University of Maine s first President, was established in 1995 to recognize and honor alumni and friends who intend to remember the University of Maine or its affiliated organizations by making a bequest or other form of planned or deferred gift. uch gifts will benefit the university in the years ahead without necessarily requiring that the donor fund the gift at the present time. While the gift is deferred, the benefits of membership in the ociety begin immediately. 30 MAKING THE E X T R A O R D I N A RY POIBLE There are more than 105,000 UMaine alumni; many more have taken UMaine courses to enrich their personal and professional lives. UMaine students traveled to more than 40 countries to take classes, participate in internships and conduct research. Alumni with connections to fraternities and sororities are among some of UMaine s most faithful donors and volunteers. Greek life has existed at UMaine since 1874 and remains a strong influence: 1,046 students are active members of one of the 17 fraternities or seven sororities. In the past three years, more than 24,000 PLANNED GIT can ensure that a donor s philanthropic priorities continue to impact UMaine in perpetuity. Tom Hosmer 58 directed his planned gift of more than $8 million toward ongoing maintenance of the UMaine campus, including some of its signature facilities, such as ogler Library. Hosmer s overall giving to UMaine totals nearly $10 million. students and guests have begun and ended campus tours at Buchanan Alumni House, a signature facility and venue for many special events.
