4 MICROCREDIT WORKSHOP Help women reclaim their dignity by giving them the opportunity to work their way out of poverty SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 6 TH 2008 Victoria Conference Centre Microcredit works because it puts the power to change lives directly into the hands of those who need it most the working poor. A mother s increased income immediately benefits her children and their nutrition. It allows the recipient to acquire goods or resources with which they can make a living. It is a loan and therefore supports the recipient s dignity and self motivation. The Rotarian Action Group for Microcredit (RAGM) is working to end poverty, one small loan at a time. At this workshop, RAGM president Steven Rickard will introduce us to this powerful new way that Rotarians can make a difference that is sustainable, effective and ethical. The only basis for the eradication of poverty and sustained development in an impoverished community is with increased economic activity. Microcredit has done that for millions of people. Rotary can provide the means to use our capital, one small loan at a time, to help the extremely poor climb out of the poverty trap. Microcredit can become the foundation for many other complementary interventions health, literacy, clean water that build sustainable communities. At the September workshop, you will hear how other Rotary clubs here on Vancouver Island and in Alberta have supported microcredit projects throughout the developing world. Workshop presenters will give an overview of microcredit, outline Rotary s involvement and the role of the Rotarian Action Group for Microcredit, and provide practical ways for your club to get involved. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: AUGUST 27, 2008 This workshop is presented by Rotary Project Unity, representing 11 Rotary clubs in Greater Victoria.
