1 BATH HIGH SCHOOL PRESERVATION NEWSLETTER PIRATE S REVENGE NINTH EDITION DECEMBER, 2011 Exterior Improvements The Work Continues! To all who have supported this effort, now the payoff begins. As shown above in July of this year 3/4 the roof on the buildings (Northwest Wing, Northeast Wing, and the Connector) was replaced by a new shingle roof with significant structural repairs. With the removal of the kitchen on the South (Cafeteria) Wing in 2009 the work began to restore the building as closely as possible to its original character. The new shingle roof is significant as it duplicates as closely as possible the original 1920 s roof. With the entry of the Bath High School properties into the National Register of Historic Places in 2008 came a responsibility to decide upon exactly what path to take to maintain the property. Earlier this year the Board as required by the State & National Historic Preservation entities decided upon Rehabilitation as the preferred treatment option for the buildings. This designation is defined by the National Historic as: the process of returning a property to a state of utility, through repair or alteration, which makes possible an efficient contemporary use while preserving those portions and features of the property which are significant to its historic, architectural, and cultural values. The Standards for Rehabilitation acknowledge the need to alter or add to an historic building to meet continuing or new uses while retaining the buildings historic character. With a commitment to stabilize and reclaim the buildings the current emphasis is on exterior improvements. Specifically, to restore all windows not previously completed on front of the buildings facing Hwy 92. This work is underway and further restoration will continue down King St. and next around the back side of the Northeast Wing auditorium and Connector as funds are available. (see above) This along with the roof project takes us another step closer to completely drying in the building. Replacement of the original Portico entrance into the auditorium is slated to start in early December. THE BRICKS ARE ON THE GROUND! This is made possible by the generous donation by an anonymous donor along with the Havens Grant and fund raising activities. Our vision is clear, as we continue to stabilize the buildings and move forward with a sound reuse plan. BHSP s agreement with the Historic Bath Foundation in the fall of 2010 stands as a model of cooperation between our organizations for development through adaptive re-use. We have continued to seek strategic partnerships with likeminded organizations. The most recent progress in this direction is our current discussions with the Friends Bath Community Library toward relocating the Library into first floor of the South Wing (old Cafeteria). It is through the commitment and hard work of members, committees, board, and other supportive entities that we continue to move this Project forward. Although the task is large I have no doubt that we will succeed! Sandra E. 2 PIRATE S REVENGE Message from the President The Bath High School Preservation (BHSP) has been busy this summer. We have a new roof on the East and West wings. We will begin the reconstruction of the portico, which was extended from the East wing (auditorium), when the school was first built. You may have seen the bricks piled there for that work. Irene did us some small damage, but the shingles stayed on the roof, a tribute to Sandra Harrison s foresight in insisting on a higher than required wind resistant shingle. We plan to put the Bath Public Library in the South wing, which is the old cafeteria wing. That is in the works. Our membership is in excess of 300 now, thanks to the hard work of Nelda Ormond s membership committee. I would remind everyone that anyone who wishes to join the BHSP is encouraged to do so. You need not be an alumnus of Bath High School (BHS) in order to join. In fact, four of the BHSP Board members did not attend BHS. You may access the BHSP website at Jimmy Edwards BHSP Parade Float Wins 2nd Place Special Events chairman, Becky Tuten, appointed Elaine Harrison, to coordinate the 2011 BHSP float. Elaine asked that the following individuals be credited with contributing to the success of the project. Star Credle for printing and banners; Tony Boyd and Mike Godley for supplies; Larry Boyd for the BHSP Photo; Kathy Clark and Marti Buchanan for assisting with float design implementation and assembly. John and Kathy Clark, BHSP, alumni, escorted the float. while members of their family (children, grandchildren, and friends) rode on board. BHSP was fortunate to win the second place ribbon in the Civic Category. Current Bath Elementary School students Sydney & Hannah Baker; & former students Amy Clark Toler, Misty Clark Hernandez, and Caitlin Ormond along with friends on board!
