5 LAURITZ B. HOLM-NIELSEN THE DANISH MODEL A new deal that includes reforms of Governance, Instututional Landscape, and Financial Compact. Now niversities are self-governing public institutions. In consequence: Universities are lead by independent and co-opting boards Universities have academic autonomy Universities have significant economic autonomy and accountability Universities have organisational autonomy Rector is recruited by a board. The rector recruits a management team

HOLM-NIELSEN THE INTERNAL BALANCE OF AARHUS UNIVERSITY A coherent senior management team vertically and horisontally A senior management team with strategic and economic competence A unified senior management team providing cooperation and knowledge exchange across the university A professional senior management team, fundamentally dependent on input from external and internal parties

The four chairs comprise a joint committee The respective dean participates in the meetings, and is responsible for servicing the council The Academic councils: safeguard freedom, quality and transparency in academic issues, Advice the dean on strategic, budget related and ressource issues Recommend members for committees of special expertice Grant academic degrees
