2 FOUNDED IN THE XV th CENTURY Sainte-Barbe was a medieval college originally built in 1460 on Sainte-Genevieve mountain in the heart of Paris, along with many other colleges at the time.

7 LHEUREUX S BUILDINGS (1881)

8 XX th CENTURY Starting in the 1940s, the Sainte-Barbe College buildings were demolished except Lheureux s buildings. On the vacated grounds were built the new Cujas Law Library (1958), «the small» extension of Sainte-Genevieve Library (1954), followed by «the large» one for stacks (1961).

11 This is the second part of the Lheureux s buildings, on the other side of the schoolyard.

12 On the north side, a construction built by Daniel Lionel and Raoul Brandon, in 1936, links the two Lheureux s buildings.

13 On the south side : - a building for the staff s room -a gym - a building for class rooms (1967, architect : R. Lebret).

19 U3M PROJECT The rehabilitation of the Sainte-Barbe college is at the heart of U3M project for university libraries. Three aims : Multidisciplinary library for undergraduate students Extra-stacks for Sainte-Genevieve and Cujas libraries Documentation centers for legal research

20 PLANNING OF SURFACES Refurbishment of existing buildings Library : m² Research : m² Common spaces (technical or security) : m² Creation of new surfaces under the yard Cujas stacks : 726 m² Sainte-Geneviève stacks : 726 m²

21 CHOOSING AN ARCHITECT : THE COMPETITIVE PROCEDURE The programmation was ready at the end of 2001 and the architecture competition was then launched. Four architects out of 113 were first selected by a jury. They then had to present their project.

25 The biggest problem was how to keep the historical elements as close to their original state as possible while making the building functional. Exemple : the canteen with specific furniture which must be re-used

26 There is the architect s proposal to re-use the marble tables by placing two together in order to widen them.

28 This is the amphitheatre used in the old days for physics and chemistry classes. The very narrow tiers will be widened, but the furniture will have to be reused.

31 Other parts of the buildings to be preserved : roofs, façades, the stairs at the back of Lheureux s buildings, and the stairs of the covered playground. This last obligation has an important impact on the project because it prevents the architect from putting the three buildings at the same level at the ground floor level.
