3 Product Problem statement The final project is concerned with the design of a rehabilitation centre in the city centre of Amsterdam, situated at the Overtoom. Currently, rehabilitation centres are being situated out of town, isolated from society. Because of the social role of rehabilitation centres and because of the developments in the system of cure and care, more and more healthcare start to select an urban context. The large, white institutions are making way for a personal, human, healing environment. Reade requires a new building that reflects this new vision within the physical rehabilitation healthcare. The main research questions are: - How could architecture offer a positive contribution to the rehabilitation process of rehabilitants with different disabilities and injuries? - How could the building during the rehabilitation process contribute to the reintegration of people with disabilities, and encourage the participation and autonomy of the rehabilitant? - How could the building respond adequately to the above mentioned changing vision within the rehabilitation health care? Goal The goal of this graduation project is researching how the architecture of rehabilitation centres can contribute to the recovery process of the rehabilitants in a positive way. In addition it will be a particular challenge to design a health institution in a city like Amsterdam with ample space without losing the comforting, human scale for the individual. It is our intension to create a gradual transition from intimate and peaceful space into dynamic and public space. Beyond the special programmatic requirements of rehabilitants and staff, the sensory qualities of the architectural solution will be extremely important when it comes to people with disabilities.

4 Process Method description Site research: historical analysis, analysis of the Vondelpark and Overtoom, analysis of the current building Visiting and analysing several rehabilitation institutions Mass studies Drawing and modelling during the design process Literature studies, desk research and interviews Courtyard studies Literature and general practical preference For literature and general practical preferences, I refer to the reports written (in Dutch) for the Research Seminar of MSc3: Report 1: Een healing environment voor LIS patiënten Report 2: Het stimuleren van participatie en re-integratie Onderzoek naar de mogelijkheden voor de re-integratie van mensen met een lichamelijke beperking gedurende het revalidatieproces in het revalidatiecentrum Reade te Amsterdam Report 3: Een multidisciplinaire behandeling Onderzoek naar de relatie tussen de organisatiestructuur van revalidatiecentra in Nederland en de ruimtelijke organisatie van het gebouw Besides literature research, I also interviewed different type of users of rehabilitation centres in The Netherlands: i.e. physiotherapists, an occupational therapist, the head of the nursing department, staff officer, cluster manager Children, the head of facility services and a building coordinator. Furthermore, plans and charts are being used in order to get a clear picture on the organisation of rehabilitation centres in the Netherlands.

5 Reflection Relevance This graduation project aims at getting an insight in the new, future role of rehabilitation centres in society. What does rehabilitation mean within an urban context? In a broader sense this project will offer an answer on how to re-integrate disabled people into society and in which way architecture can contribute to their process of re-integration. The graduation project also aims at generating new solutions in architecture within the context of future healthcare concepts.
