5 GIB GATE GATEWAY Sir Sidney Kidman Born in When I was 13 years old I ran away on my one-eyed horse, My future started to unfold. Farming was my first love, Although I made my name in trade. When drought came to the land, The farmers were dismayed. And so I took a chance, Purchasing farms for almost free. I owned 68 stations. Fortune was kind to me. Today I am remembered For the greatest cattle empire of all, Bigger then Great Britain. In history I stand tall. Who Am I? Simone Young Born in 1961, I had no dream of glory. My main education started in Sydney, In a lovely little school called Monte. In my later years at school, I studied piano and composition. I also succeeded in my work, Plus all my tests and tuition. In 1985, I started my career, Conducting in the Opera House, Began to free me of stage fear. Now I m doing what I love, Conducting every day. Across the seas and in my home land, My talent I display. 6 GIB GATE GATEWAY Helena Kirsova Born in Copenhagen, I was the youngest child of My mother, Ingeborg, and my father, Sophus, Who were, oh, so very proud. At the age of sixteen, I ran away to Paris Against my parents will. Unfortunately, I didn t have enough money, So I had to cut my hair and sell it, To pay for ballet lessons. Once I d become a professional at ballet, I became a leading dancer, And when I toured Australia, I preferred it over Denmark. In 1940 I established a ballet school in Australia, And at the same time became a choreographer. At the age of 46 I retired, And travelled back to Europe, I had accomplished lots in my life, But it came to an end When I died of cancer, At the age of fifty-two. Hudson Fysh I grew up in Launceston, Tasmania, My schooling was a complete failure. Never did I know, My future would turn out like so. My younger life never mattered to me. In 1921 I advised John Flynn, But I thought this idea would end up in the bin, But he formed The Flying Doctor Service. In 1920, I started my company, My first million soon came to me. The name of my company stands for Queensland and Northern Territory Airline Services, And I also founded Tasman Empire Airways. 7 GIB GATE GATEWAY Hamilton Hume I was born in a place Not far from here. When I turned seventeen I explored new land, Enjoying the freedom And taking in the glory. I decided this was for me! I discovered the Murray And Darling Rivers And Lake Bathurst too, The Goulburn plains as well. All those explorations I did Added up to my number one goal- To be the best Explorer I could be! The year that I died was I had lived my life Long and true. I died in a place that I had discovered. Yass it is called, I remember it well. In 1963 I was knighted by Queen Elizabeth. I had a wife and 3 children, And I liked to walk and watch cricket. I retired from my job in 1966, When I was still in power, So I would be remembered by Australians As the best at my job. My great granddaughter is Beatrix Faulkner. By Beatrix Faulkner Sir Roden Cutler I was the bravest in my regiment. I repaired a telephone line Under heavy machine-gun fire. I fought off tanks on my own. Because of this feat I was awarded the Victoria Cross. But during this time, I was cut off from my group And was seriously wounded. It was 26 hours before they found me, By then my leg was so bad They had to amputate. I was medically discharged, And when I returned home I was elected as Governor of NSW. I was educated at Launceston Grammar School Where I received a Bachelor s Degree from Melbourne University, I also studied music at Oxford University. In 1955 a breakthrough came when my piano piece, Sonatina, Won a music festival in Baden-Baden, My father died in 1961, In the early 1970 s I was engaged to Anne Boyd, But we broke off the engagement because we both agreed That one composer in a household was enough, I recently celebrated my eightieth birthday. Who Am I? By Cirwun Brittain Rev. John Flynn In 1880 I was born. My mum died in childbirth and so did my sibling. Then my family was torn apart We reunited at Snake Gully, near Ballarat I was the third child and second son. I enrolled to be a minister at Ormond College And at the same time I published the book, The Bushman s Companion. I brought communication and pastoral care to people in the outback. The business I founded was the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. All my stations were put in place so people could communicate with the base, But I didn t know how I would pay for them. I continued with my trainers, I ran at a speedy pace, I ran in competitions And won many a race. 200 and 400 metres Were the distances I liked best, But the Olympic Games in Sydney Were my biggest test. A wonderful moment for me Was lighting the Olympic flame, But a gold medal in the 400 Bought me lots of fame. I ran a lap in victory The aboriginal flag held up high I m proud of my culture. Now, Who am I! Weary Dunlop I was born in a town called Wangaratta, I was strong and tall and was great at sport, I played for the Wallabies. In 1934 got a medical degree from Melbourne University. During WWII I joined the Australian Army. Captured by the Japanese, I was forced to build a railway from Burma to Thailand. I saved many lives while I was prisoner of war And never gave up hope. It was the place to be But I had to go back to Australia, It was the place for me, I shipped my son to boarding school When he was only three, I know it sounds rough But it was the right thing for me. My designing label was such a great success, It s still popular today. But people still know me for my gruesome death. I died in 1977, Born in 1899, Bludgeoned fiercely and fatally, Until I broke my spine. Who Am I? Johnny O Keefe Born in 1935, Only eleven days after Elvis, I was destined to be a Rock n Roller. I had a sister, Anne, and a brother, Barry. Our parents were Ray and Thelma. While at school, I was always close to getting DUX. With the Dee Jays I brought rock music to Australia. I turned professional with the Dee Jays in 57. This made us Australia s first Rock n Rollers. I played jazz, and then the blues, I also impersonated Johnnie Ray. Adults were shocked by my music. I became captain of the so-called Invincibles. My baggy was my pride. When I wasn t playing cricket, I worked as a journalist. I married my childhood sweetheart, Jessie Watman. I played in the harsh Bodyline ashes series And never unsettled anyone but my opposition. In my last innings I only needed four runs To break the benchmark but got out for nought. I retired from cricket at the age of 47. For the rest of my life I worked as a stock broker. In 1979 I was awarded an Order of Australia medal. I retired in Adelaide where I died at the age of 93. I was a respected politician In my tailcoat and hat, I introduced hospitals But I didn t do only that. I migrated to Australia.
